Some days ago The News entered a
remonstrance against tho habit of spit
ting on the sidewalk and in public
places This subjoct might seem at first
thought a trivial ono but it is a grave
mistake to so consider it Public health
is the foundation of general and indi
vidual prosperity Whatever helps to
promote it helps in adding to the entire
round of human happiness There aro
certain general conditions which cannot
be ignored in Norfolk or nuy other com
munity without knocking the under
pinning out from under tho whole social
superstructure It is just dawning upon
the mind of tho public that this question
of disease germs is of tho highest import
ance to tho common safety Thoro is a
vast number of microbes that in one
form or another make a business of
preying upon humnn hfo Certain con
ditions aro favorable to their growth
Take tuberculosis for instance more
than one hundred thousand eoplo in
the United States die annually of con
sumption How can this figure be re
duced The answer is found very
largely in The News suggestion that
people btop spitting in public places
