How to Be Good Nurse ,
Trained nurses must discover the
hobbles of the patients whom they
are caring for , must cater to those hob
bles and must bo sorry for the sick
whom they are called upon to nurse.
That's the way for a nurse to get
Into the good graces of the family
she's hired by , according to Dr. Peci-
val , superintendent of the Norfolk In
sane hospital , who gave advice to the
nurses at the graduating exercises
held Thursday evening. Ho said their
smiles would often do more than drugs
to euro the 111. In part ho said :
"When you go out of this hospital ,
or those that may stay with us , al
ways bo cheerful and act like ladles.
It Is for the good of yourself. PleasIng -
Ing personality will oven cover grave
faults. There are all kinds of nurses.
No two , oven though they graduate
together , have the same qualifications ,
as I have stated before , or use tlio
same methods In dealing with the people
ple , which will depend on your first
Impression when you enter a home.
The first duty Is to please. You must
make the family feel that you are
just the ono they wanted. How are

you to do this ? You must try to les

"In the homo of the poor , there Is
not much need of entertaining. When
the patient is out of danger , the nurse

clearly , what he desires. Every old
man has a hobby. Ho may not know

the patient is a woman , ' it Is all the

If a boy is 111 , talk to him about base

Y. M. C. A. Gets $116.
"It Is safe to say that the receipts
of the Y. M. C. A. entertainment will
net the Y. M. C. A. fund about $ llti , "
said Chairman C. S. Parker of the on-
tcntalnment committee today. The
doctor says that , although the reeclpta
have not yet been counted the enter
tainment has been a paying proposi
tion for the fund.
The program was a dollghtful ono
throughout and It was thoroughly ap
preciated by the big audience. Every
member was enthusiastically applaud
ed , some of the artists being brought
back for two encores. On the whole
the program was a distinct and pleas
ant surprlso to many of the audience ,
who didn't realize that Norfolk con
tained so much genuine artistic ability
as was assembled upon this occasion.
The program opened with a soxtetto
from "Lucia Dl Lammcrmoor" by the
Hcothoven trio , composed of Mr. Vo-
get , Miss Ilcebo and Miss Gatcnby.
The opening number was a favorlto
and was enthusiastically encored.
Miss Myrtle llewlns sang a beauti
ful soprano solo , "O , Dry Those
Tears , " which was heartily applauded.
She responded with an encore.
Mr. Voget played a piano solo , "So
nata , " Op. 21i , Andante Scherzo , which
added more laurels to his list. Ho
played Holablrd , " of his own composi
tion , for an encore.
W. II. Hoffman gave a humorous
reading , "Talk On Tap , " In a clover
manner and was called back for an
encore , In which he gave a reading on
"The Shyster Lawyer. " This also
pleased the house.
One of the pleasant surprises of the
evening was the singing of Victor E.
Ernesen , who was on the program for
two solos and was called back for a
third. Mr. Arneson's voice proved to
be a magnlllcent one , his tones full of
sweet melody , and ho made a "hit"
with the audience.
Ileese Solomon , who has pleased
Norfolk audiences so many times be
fore , sang a pretty solo and was given
prolonged applause , responding with a
neat little encore which ho said was
"composed by Dr. Charles Parker of
Norfolk. " The author refused to respond
spend to calls for a speech.
Those ol the auilience who did not
know of her skill were amazed at the
artistic ability shown by Miss Marian
Gow , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C.
Gow , on the violin. Her solo , "Con
certo In A Minor , " was received with
pronounced enthusiasm and she was
compelled respond to an encore.
The vaudeville specialty by "Atiolph
and Osgaard" was well received.
The vaudeville artists were : Ben
Hull , ft'llllam Werner ana & . Trulock.
Frank A. Drown sang a 7 > ass solo ,
"There Let Mo Rest , " and was vig
orously encored.
Miss Elsie Gatcnby gave a prettily
rendered piano solo , which was appre
ciated by the audience. She was
brought back for an encore.
Mrs. R W. Emery ( nee Miss N'elllo
Gerecke ) sang a sweet soprano solo ,
"Haymaking , " and was called back for
two encores. She was given a tre
mendous ovation when she appeared
on the stage.
The program closed with a violin
solo by Mr. Vogct , "Concerto Caprice , "
a now selection of bis own composi
tion. It was a beautiful bit of music
nnd n fitting finale to a triumphant
evening's schedule.
