A Modest Hold-up Man.
Sioux Falls , S. D. , Oct. 1C. While
returning homo after marketing a
quantity of grain , W. II , Lllllo , a prom
inent farmer of Jerauld county , had an
interesting experience with a holdup
man who , In his way , was one of the
most modest of holdup men. It was
dark when Llllio started homo with
the proceeds from the grain carefully
tucked in his inside pocket. At the
darkest and most lonely point on the
road the holdup man suddenly sprang
from n place of concealment and seiz
ed the bridles of Lilllo's horses. The
animals wcro brought to a full stop
and the holdup man started toward
the wagon , with the demand that Llllie
band over to him one-half the cash re
ceived in payment for the grain. Why
ho did not demand the whole of It Is
n mystery. Lllllo. as soon as ho noted
that the holdup man had released his
hold of the horses , suddenly slashed
them with the whip. The animals ,
smarting under the sting of the whip ,
sprang forward and , after a hard run ,
Llllie succeeded in making his escape
from the would-be robber.
