POWERFUL DEMOCRATS AT WORK
SEEKING THIS END.
WILL ANSWER BEFORE JAN. 1
Mr. Dry an Will Go to Washington
Next Month for an Important Con
ference Can Have Nomination If
He Desires It , All Admit.
Washington , Oct. 5 , On high au
thority It may 1)0 said that men of roc-
Ofpilr.cd national standing In the dem
ocratic party recently made rcpresen-
tAtloiiH to Mr. llryan having for their
tmrpowo that gentleman's withdrawal
from the presidential Hltuatlon. It may
be ald further , on the Hamo authority ,
that Mr. Bryan has promised to make
* n announcement regarding hlH plans
in an address before the first of the
year.
Hack of those representations Is the
widespread and growing hcllef that , If
nominated , Mr. llryan cannot bo elect-
d. If he can bo convinced that this
la Uio case , his friends guarantee that
to will withdraw , especially If It Is
made clear that another may hnvo a
chance of success.
In November Mr. Bryan Is to come
cant for the purpose of delivering a
historical address. IIo will visit
friends In Washington at that time ,
and arrangements have been made for
a democratic conference of consider
able proportions In this city , for a con-
elderallon of the presidential outlook ,
Mr. Ilryan to he Its chief figure. Follow
ing this conference , Mr. Bryan will
make up his mind what ho will do , nnd
ho will deliver the address above re
ferred to , In which ho will announce
bin program.
Confident Bryan Can't Win.
It Is the earnest deslro of the big
tncn of the party , representing all sec
tions of the country , that Mr. Bryan
may see his way clear to a renuncia
tion of his presidential ambition , so far
as 1908 Is concerned. These men will
bo present at the conference In this
city , and they will press their belief
.homo on him with full force.
The feeling Inside the democratic
party that Mr. Bryan cannot bo suc
cessful next year is so strong that party
leaders hope there will bo little serious
difficulty In bringing him to the de
sired point of vlow. All kinds of cir
cumstantial and corroborative detail
arc available by way of supporting the
general proposition , and these will bo
nproad before him In as convincing a
way as possible.
Of course , should ho desire to make
the race , notwithstanding the discour
aging outlook , nothing will remain butte
to nominate him , for It Is everywhere
admitted ( hat ho has the party under
Buch perfect control as to make It cer
tain that It will do his bidding next
year , both as to candidate and plat
form.
Johnson Next Foremost
One of the suggestive features of
tills democratic situation Is the rapidly
growing opinion In advance of any
etatement from Mr. Bryan , that ho
will decline to make the 11)08 ) race. On
tliis opinion many attractive theories
arc being worked out. In all of them
Governor Johnson of Minnesota has a
prominent position. With Bryan out of
the way , it Is a growing belief that the
contest for the nomination would He
between Johnson and Judson Harmon
of Cincinnati , attorney general In the
last Cleveland cabinet but "
, a "regu
lar" In both the Bryan campaigns. Of
the two Johnson is almost always
named first. There is some talk of
former Representative Charles A.
Towne. once of Minnesota , hut now of
Now York , but this talk is thus far
confined to Mr. Towne's personal
friends , who know what his ambition
la politically. Judge Gray of Dela
ware would probably be the nominee
after Bryan but for the fact that ho
was a sound-money man In 1890 and
1900. Although there is still a good
deal of talk about him , those who are
well Informed do not take it seriously.
Governor Almost Sure to Please.
Mr. Bryan is friendly to both Har
mon and Johnson but for Gray be has
little use It Is one of the Bryan pe
culiarities not to mix socially with men
who are not in the Bryan camp politi
cally. This peculiarity has kept Bry
an from having anything to do with
such men as Grover Cleveland. It would
keep him from supporting Judge Gray
for .tho nomination and without that
support Gray could not possibly hope
to win. If Bryan should decline to
run next year , the party In return for
the sacrifice would bo almost certain
to permit him to name the candidate
and write the platform. Within the
last two months ho has visited the
Harmons at their Cincinnati home ,
while it is well known that ho Is very
fond of the Minnesota governor.
Should Bryan take the 1908 nomina
tion , It Is said that the party would
bo fairly certain to nominate Governor
Johnson for second place. This would
bo unusual , both men coming from the
same part of the country , but the
Johnson feeling is now so strong all
over the east and south as to give this
statement a good deal of substantial
footing.
