WOULD BE A PUBLIC BENEFIT lorfolk Physician Shows How Various Organizations Coming Here For Con ventions Will Have No Suitable Pub lic Place for Meeting In Future. i li'rom Thursday a Duily.J That the Norfolk Commercial club tight to provide and maintain a suit- ble suite of club rooms for tlio pur- ese of entertaining conventions of arlous organizations which wish to icct In Norfolk and for which there s now no suitable place , Is the sngges- lon of Dr. J. H. Mackay in a letter to The News concerning the matter. The ame idea has been expressed by a lumber of business men In the city , 'ho letter urging the establishment of his business men's club is as follows : every country practitioner feels at ionic to ask questions or to partlci- > ate In the discussions. In the state society specialists from the cities mo- lopollze almost the entire session with ong-wlndcd theoretical and technical lissertatlons and for this reason the Norfolk society has Increased In favor witli the up-country doctors. I say the Norfolk society because of the twenty- one meetings held In the past ten years .wenty wore held In Norfolk. Heretofore the Elks have given the doctors the use of their club rooms , nit It Is understood that this privi- ego will bo withdrawn in the future. Many of the members of the medical profession throughout northern Ne- > raska belong to the local order of the Elks and because these could but rare- iy enjoy the privileges of the society : he club rooms were thrown open to ; hem and their associates semi-annual- Iy on the occasion of the meeting of the medical society. Later the dent ists and teachers and Y. M. C. A. or ganizations having brother Elks in their societies requested the same priv ilege and possibly the politicians may come next with a similar demand until the reason for the action of the trus tees of the Elks' club rooms becomes obvious. This leaves the doctors and the others likewise without a meeting place. An ordinary ball is not a suit able place for such an assemblage as Norfolk , Neb. , Jan. 17. Editor News : In July the doctors will return to Nor folk for the semi-annual meeting of the Elkhorn Valley Medical associa tion and they have no prospective place In which to hold their meeting. This society is becoming very popular and has expanded from a local orga nization to one embracing members from three states. The character of the papers and discussions is of a high standard and fully equal to the work done In more pretentious orga nizations. It is believed that In a few years It will take precedence to the stale society for the reason that tlio papers are condensed , the discussions brief and practical and trenchant and the doctors' meeting. Smoking , com mittee and toilet rooms are necessary and movable tables that can be used to servo refreshments on should bo a part of the facilities offered for enter- Jiinment and these should bo furnisher free to visiting members , some of whom come 300 miles to attend this society's meetings. ' The Commercial club has hero a splendid opportunity to build a clul room for its members that could bo placed at the disposal of societies like that of the Elkhorn Valley Medical association. J. H. Mackay. CHESS CLUB IS FORMED. Norfolk Lovers of That Game Orga nlze for Winter Evenings. A chess club has boon formed in Norfolk , the first of its kind ever orga nlzed in this city. The meetings are held each week in homes of members After the games , refreshments are served. The club mot last night with J. E. Haaso at his homo on South Tenth street. Members of the club are : Carl Wilde , Albert Degner , Ve nus Nenow , P. J. Fuesler , Henry Haase , J. E. Haase , H. E. Zttkowskl , August Steffen. All of the members live in the city now excepting Mr. Zlt kowskl , who left last week. Get In cany with want ads. for to ( morrow's paper. They will reach the people. They will be read. IS DEMOLISHED IN THE FALL Unusual Accident to New Bridge , Which Was Just About to be Turned Over to County , Occurred Southwest "of Town Turned Somersault. Word has just been received In Nor- 'oik of the overturning of the new Kost bridge across the Elkhorn river at a joint three miles west and one mile south of Norfolk. The accident oc curred Tuesday afternoon , just before he new bridge was to be thrown open to public travel. By the breaking of one of the steel rods which helped to support the bridge , the structure was Iropped and , the remaining rods act- ng as a pivot , it turned a somersault and lit upside down on the ice beneath. The Ice was so tough that the force of the fall did not crack the frozen water. The bridge was demolished. The structure was still the property of the bridge building concern which iad the installation contract , so that Lhere will be no loss to the county. The bridge building firm , which is headed by Towlo of Omaha , will have an inspector here Thursday to look at the break and , In case the broken rod was caused by a flaw in material , the manufacturer of the steel rods will be held responsible. The bridge cost between $3,000 and $4,000. $ It is considered mighty fortunate that the bridge fell ofeblert ETAOIN that the bridge fell before it had been turned over to the public , as it might have dropped with people upon It , in which case fatalities must have re sulted.
