While President Roosevelt Is In favor of allowing the Cubans to try over again the problem of self government , it would not sur prise America if the Cubans were to ultimately fall at the attempt and force this country to adopt the annex ation plan. The Now York election will ho a jlrotty clear test as to the balance of power between thought and Ignorance lu that stnto. Mr. Hearst will spend his money to win the election and to buy votes , lie has Tammany hall be hind him , with Murphy as the main power. A few mouths ago ho was de nouncing Murphy and Tammany hall through his papers and In his speech es , as corrupt and criminal. Ho said a little while ago that Murphy ought to bo In jail and that the man who won nn ofllce under Murphy , belonged to Murphy. Now ho hns been nomi nated by Murphy , Is miming for ofllco under Murphy's guidance and belongs to Murphy Surely no Intelligent voters ers could put faith in such a candi date , and he will not get the thinking ballot. Ho will got the votes of the Ignorant classes who may bo attracted by the pictures In his papers and the mammoth headlines , who are Imp res eionlstic if they can rend at all , am : who will vote for Hearst because , In this campaign , ho is "a good follow. Another championship In the great national American game has been set tied. It all went to prove that no con test Is ever over until the very end That is the characteristic of American games , both In play and In serious life. T1I1C FIGHT FOR CONC.MK8S. \Vo dislike the way the light for ongresn Is degenerating In this dla- rlct. I'oiwuinlly on friendly terms with Mich cniidldalo wo have refused to irlnt any of the articles fiom the tolling pnpors , for the reason , that he fact that these same papers nro supporting Norrls Ilrown , Searlo and Onion would Indicate that they nio tot bolting .ludgo lloyd on account of IH ! railroad connections but rather 'rom personal motives. On the other hand the republican longrosslonnl committee who are try- ug to put .luilgu Graves In the mime class with .Judge Uoycl are sure to nuse n political abortion. This district Is normally twelve bun- I rod republican. That the republicans ire not willing to light this buttle as hey hnve In the pnat on the quest Ion if who put down the war and also saved the country from going to de struction lu IS'.lfi , shows that they nro rlghtcned. A word of caution to .ludgo lloyd : Call In your mud sllngers. The dom- icrats have naught to lese by a cam- mlgn of aggression and nil bluffs will ) < > called. Crolghton Liberal. To read the nhovo article from the Crelgliton Independent newspaper. It vould appear to ono not versed In the situation that the republicans hnd brown mud In this campaign and that ho fuslonlsts , In their efforts to elect ludgo Oravi's , had refrained from any such methods. The Crelgliton paper speaks a word of caution to .Judge loyd , giving the judge a tip as to how 10 can best he elected , Insinuating hat there nro mudslingers working for lloyd. It mentions the methods of the republican congressional central committee. Now as a matter of plain truth , the temocrats In this campaign have done tlio only mudthrowlng that has been tone. The democratic congressional con- ral committee bus sent broadcast an irtlclo from the Ponder Republic , a nnverlck sheet which no party cares 0 brand , denouncing Judge Boyd as 1 hypocrite. It matters not whether in Individual democratic paper hero > r there refuses to print such trash ho fact remains that the democratic ougrosslonnl committee at Fremont ias sent the stuff out with the hope > f Injuring Judgo'lloyd and the matter s up to the democratic party as mud- throwing of that organization. The republicans In this campaign ire not throwing mud. They nro wag ing a fairer tight against Graves than the democrats nro waging against lloyd. Wo don't blame any paper for llsllklng the way the light for con gress Is degenerating In this district. The democratic committee hns sent out rot In nn nttempt to stain Judge Floyd's character and wo are giud to see the method censured by papers In Iiulgo Graves' own party. Judge lloyd will bo elected in this campaign' ' ' ! } ! spito' of the mud that is being hurled at him. Ho will bo elect , ed because ( ho votersof the district know'him for a man , fair and square , outspoken and honorable , and In no sense a inlsroprcseutn.tlvo ( if facts. Ho will bo elected because ho Is In harmony with - President Roosevelt , while his opponent Is pledged to an tagonize Roosevelt. Ho will bo chos en because the republican party has given prosperous conditions to this country and no revolutionary legisla tion , such us Is promised by the dem ocratic congressional candidate , IH wanted by the people of this country. Prices are gimd for all farm pro ducts. Wages are high. There Is work for all , and more. Judge Boyd can stand firmly on the republican principles of the day and bo elected. Ho does not need to throw mud. He hns not , nor have his friends. He will win In spite of the mud from the democratic camp. We are glad such methods Hnd little fa vor , oven among democratic papers. OVKRCONFIUBNCH DANGER. Hut three weeks more remain before the voters of the country will once again cast their ballots for various olllclnls , Mate and congressional. The election In an off year , between presl dentlnl elections , Is never as Intense ns the national campaigns , and this > t'ar is no exception. Perhaps the fact that It Is an off your , perhaps the fact that there Is plenty of work and plenty of contentment strewn around over these prairies , perhaps overcon fldenco In party success at the polls have all contributed their share to n lack of general public Interest In things which alive to do with the slips of paper that will slide Into the ballot llOXPb. Certain It Is. If reports from every where are to bo credited , that the pub lic pulse Is not beating at any extra ordinary rate of speed because of the approaching battle. Thor * is no doubt that Uils general lack of Interest Is duo partially at leant among republicans to nn overconfidence - confidence of success. This will , If not corrected , cut down the pnrty ma jorities If Indeed It does not work worse Injury than that. There Is no question but that the republican party In Nebraska will win hands down , because many who for merly voted other tickets will this year vote for Sheldon and his ticket. Them Is no question , either , that the i ( 'publicans will carry congressional districts In this slate , If only the ne cessity of getting out the vote Is Im pressed upon the rank and file of the party. Hut thoiu Is dnnger of lee much con- llilt'iieo ' In an easy winning. This con- Illldii Is not peculiar to the Third dls- 11 let of Nebraska nor to any other llstrlct lu this state , but Is a general condition all over the country. Times nio good. The farmers are getting good prices for tholr farm pro- liicts. Thi'ie Is work for all , nnd more than enough. Wages arc hlglu I'liore Is plenty to eat and plenty to wear , and everybody Is happy. They ire route-lit to let well enough nlone , mil they nro In favor of the rOpuh- lean ndnilnlstrntlon's continuing to nnnnge the affairs of this government. But there Is such n thing as ovorcon- Idiuice. There Is such a thing as be coming Indifferent to the campaign mil allowing the other fellow to elect the ticket. In the Third district the republicans mvc between 1,200 nnd 1,800 norinnl mnjorlty nnd It Is snfe to any that the nnjnrlty tills year , If the vote gets ml , will ho higher than that. But In order to win , wo must get out the vote. Nobody Is offering any good reason why Judge Boyd should not be elected o congress , nnd there nro plenty of onsoiiH self-suggesting IIB to why lie should be elected. But active Interest will bo required n order to bring out the vote nnd do lustlce to the party. There are less thnn tbrco weeks remaining to get out : hls vote , > o that action on all hands will not bo out of place from now on. The ropuhllcnn pnrty goes before : ho country this year nt n time when there' seems to be strnngo unrest In ; he political world , when new doc- : rlncs are being broached and now leaders springing to the front with un familiar clarion calls. . But the ropub- Ican party , serene In confidence of the future , proud of the record of the past , pointing to nchlovomonts nnd promising further progress , appeals to the snner Judgment of thinking voters. The policies of this party have been tried and tholr practical application through legislation and administration have brought good results. The republican party does not have to go nfter now gods In every cam paign. It does not have to propose some now nostrum. It does not hnve to array ono class of citizens of the republic against another. It do.ps not have to appeal to the baser side of man's chn'racter , nor intlame his pas sion through demagogic appeals. It does not have to play upon Ignorance , hut simply appeals to renson. That Is nil it hns done in the pnst nnd is doing In this campaign buoyant In the ex pectation that the appeal will not bo In vain when addressed to the under standing nnd best.judgment of the in telligent voting population of the na tion. , , > The republican party Is asking the voters this fall , In the elections for the national house of representatives , to continue the party' 'in ' full power In congress In order that'policies of'gov ernment and administration now un der way may be conserved and carried to full completion ; that the structure' of material prosperity which has been built upon the foundation laid by the republicans In the Fifty-fourth eon- gross may rest undisturbed and re ceive further strengthening. When the financial system of the nation was endangered by democratic policies , the votera called upon the re publican party to save the day. They hnd confidence In the republicans and put them In power. The result was the establishment of the gold standard , which makes every American dollar , silver or paper , as good , ns the best dollar In the world. When the Indus tries of the country wore shattered by democratic tariff legislation , and dem ocratic administration , the votera called on the republican party to save the day. They elected a republican congress , and the result was the enact ment of new tariff laws under which wo hnvo attained a stnte of mntorlnl prosperity that Is the marvel of the world. Thp republican party hns enforced the laws against trusts , resulting In the smashing of scores of combina tions In restraint of trade. That party in congress has enacted additional leg- Islntlou for further strengthening the hands of the prosecuting branch of the government , and further limiting the great public service corporations. Others may promise and month about what they will do to the trusts , but the republican pnrty has n record of facts accomplished In the just regula tion of those corHratlons. | So , In the light of what It has done In the pnst , culling attention to what it Is doing now , nnd making plain to every ono what It wants to do In the future , the republican party feels that It can with confidence appeal for the support of thoughtful , progressive , American vet ers. AROUND TOWN. Some people think they must ho fnt IIH pigs , or they cnn't be well. At the rnto things are going , Norfolk will need Bleep Sunday morning. The lofoini rules In football do not sei-in to Juive reformed the game. It Is " 18 and caifaro" for the old lionrd sidewalks In Norfolk this week. There Is n whole lot of gossiping dona In Norfolk thnt the women nro not responsible for. When u county patient la sick , ho expects n grenl denl of attention from the county doctor. For whom docs your wife open her choicest preserves ; you , the preacher , lior kin or your kin ? It Is a pity that n delicate , refined woman Is compelled to eat. Not even i woman can cat gracefully. ' A man was telling how economically ho lived. "A Chinaman can beat you it It , " a neighbor brutally remarked. On the squnrc , now , do you really like to see a Shakespearean piny ns well ns a first-class comedy ? It Is about that time of the year when most women demonstrate that they don't know how to make pump kin plo. The Sioux City defeat of15 to 0 for the Norfolk high school footbnll tcnm was not so bud ns tljut o'f 50 to 0 ad ministered to the locnl crowd by Pierce some years ago. "I hnve about as much to do with the management of this house , " snld a man to his wife yesterday , "ns a rab bit has to do with the management of a bull dog. " A Norfolk woman went away from the theater Inst night disappointed. " 1 don't see where the mngic melody came In , " she snld. "I expected to hear some tine music. " It will pay every Norfolk woman In dollars nnd cents to keep watch of the advertisements. Bargains and good selections .are to be obtained In that way , which will otherwise be lost. What Is more despicable than the mnn who pretends to bo n friend In one's presence nnd who puts In over time during one's absence with mall- clous nnd vicious nnd everlasting ti- rndcs of abuse ? . Some people get to be such chronic grumblers that they couldn't say a decent thing about anybody who was not within hearing distance , to save their souls. A republican editor who has once rim for congress and received loyal pnrty support , and who did not put up cash for his own railway fare , Is hard ly In a position to properly furnish campaign material for democratic can didates In thesame district some years after his own incident , by making un- fntr nntl-pnss Insinuations. A little boy "visiting in Norfolk was asked what business his fntber was engaged In. The father was a soldier. "He kills people , " sold the little fel low. low."I "I should be afraid to meet him , " snld the Inquiring woman. "O , he wouldn't kill yon , " said the lad. Just be fore going to bed the horses were looked over as Is Mr. Holan's custom and everything looking alright the barn door was closed and fastened for the night. When Mr. Hohm's boys wont to the barn In the morning one of the best horses ho hnd was missing. When the boy went to the barn the door was fas tened Just ns he had left It but think ing perhaps somebody else had let the horse out , a diligent search was begun , but without finding any trace of the horse. The path near the foot bridge was then examined and a man's tracks were plainly seen leading toward the barn. Mr. Holan has gone to Crelgh ton to notify Sheriff Burns of his loss and the latter promised to use every menus In his power to recover the an imal.
