D. Kees was granted a permit to
build a brick block on the corner of
Norfolk avenue nnd Fifth street. CO
by 100 feet , one or more stories high.
The report of Street Commissioner
Rlchoy , showing walks built and re
paired and snow shoveled from walks ,
was presented. The following resolu
tion wns roitl and ndonted by unani
mous vote of the council :
Resolved , That the following de
scribed property be assessed the
amounts set opposite each description
as a special tax for now walks and for
sidewalks repaired and snow shoveled
from walks , and that the city clerk bo
instructed to certify the same to the

complete plans and specifications for
a sewerage and drainage system. The
contract price Is $ C50 , and the worl
Is to be completed by September 10

The bill of Aug. Graul , for wages
amounting to $05.00 was allowed.
The city attorney , In conjunction
with the city engineer , was Instructed
to establish a curb line over the city.
The street commissioner was In
structed to stretch a barb wire fence
on First street the full length of the
city dumping ground , with sufficient
open space for a driveway , and to
place another fence along the same
distance six rods further to the east.
This action wns taken to abate mils-
nncos on the dumping grounds.
The framing of an anti-spitting ordi
nance was discussed and deferred un
til the next meeting.

Davis saw three men on horseback

vestigate , but they ran away. Descrip
tions tallied with those of the Trypp
county men.

The Baptist Sunday school Is enjoy

Willie , the 11-years-old son of Gnu
Werner , was seriously Injured yester
day while riding a horse. The animal

Gcorgo Offenhnuser of this city is
well acquainted with John F. Brown
the Chicago teacher whom the board
of education attempted to secure as
principal In the high school. Mr. Of-
fcnhaiiscr studied Latin under Mr
Rrown nt Shonandonli , Iowa. He says
that Mr. Brown is a most excellent
Latin teacher and a very superior man ,
withal. Ho was educated for the min
istry but later gave it up.
The democratic county central com
mittee hold a meeting at the Oxnnrd

a call for a county convention to beheld
held at Battle Creek on Monday. Sep
tember 18 , when delegates to the state

GOES TO GREAT NORTHERN ,
Frank Maryott Has Gone to Minneap
olis to Get Instructions.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mnryott have
left Norfolk for Minneapolis , where
Mr. Maryolt will bo given Instructions
at the headquarters of the Great North
ern railway as to his future location.
Mr. Maryott has for some time been
In the dispatcher's office at South Nor
folk and was very efficient. He han
dled n large portion of the extra trains
between here and Bonesteel during the
Bonesteel rush. Before coming to
Norfolk Mr. Maryott was operator on
a special news wire In nn Omaha news
paper office nnd before that , for nine
years , ho had been operator on an As
sociated Press wire. The Associated
Press was too strenuous , ho said , and
ho finally gave it up. Ho had worked
In Denver for some time. Mr. and
Mrs. Maryott have many friends In
Norfolk who regret their departure.
It Is not yet definitely determined
where they will bo located.

jnerly a geiod kind hearted man , but
ho had become debased through the
excessive use of liquor. Mrs. Schraa-
der Is a hard working , worthy woman.

Farmers Grain Dealers' Association
Will Furnish Evidence.
Lincoln , Aug. 28. It Is announced
that the Farmers Grain Dealers' asso
ciation is going to assist In looking up
evidence to show the existence of n
lumber trust in this state. The suit
promises to bring out some revelations
concerning the lumber business in Ne
braska.
