Norfolk expccts.'rlght soon , to show what a live commercial cluli mny 1 for the henoflt of ft town. In tlio course of n day or two Nun Patterson may begin to realize wheth er tlio third time IB lucky for her or the state. Mr. Cleveland evidently does not Intend to stand for president when the country has given the ballot to the women. President HooRovoK In said to he devoted to the strenuous life , but ho drawn the line on hunting beam In nine feet of snow. Spring ruins mny delay the season's development of north Nebraska hut It will como on with a rush when the ncason actually opens. There Is n bare chance that there will bo a bear or two loft In Colorado when President lloosovelt and his party conclude their hunt "With n few million dollars of other people's money lying around handy would you successfully resist the temptation of doing as did Banker Bigclow ? Should May become too strenuous in making a change and open the hot air stopper too wldo thcro will bo another kick coming from a protest ing people. If there Is now any portion of Ne braska entitledto , bo classed In the "Great American Desert" those who seek It will have to wait until the flood waters have subsided sulllclontly to disclose Its character. If New York Is not to ho trusted with n control of Niagara but stands ready to turn the great falls Into pow er the national government should tnko a hand and secure the scenic wonder as a national property. Mr. Tibbies Is getting enough adver tisement out of his proposition to start a bank In Wall street to bury him In a Hood of money from would- bo depositors when ho opens up for business. The contrary may bo the effect , however. In case of doubt as to what to do with surplus money It will bo a rea sonably safe plan and n paying one , to Invest In Norfolk property. If the future can bo depended on for any thing It Is that Norfolk property will pay good returns to Investors. The trials of Nan Patterson and Ir. Koch for murder have been to the front for some days but they must now necessarily give n largo share of the stage to the fourth trial of Caleb Powers for the murder of former Gov ernor Goebel of Kentucky. Carnegie's fund for worn-out professors - fessors should at least give assurance that colleges and students should not be hampered with Instructors long after they have passed the time when they should be entitled to treatment under the Osier method. Secretary Toft says there appears to be no national or International af fair demanding that President Roosevelt velt abbreviate his vacation visit to the home of Mr. Grizzly , and It Is therefore to be presumed that chasing around after that gentleman might tend to have Us drawbacks. H Is said that Boston will hereafter be found strongly championing and supporting any pure food law that may in the future be urged In con gress or the Massachusetts legisla ture , and It has reason a scientific explorer has found salicylic acid In beans. Another slanderer of Missouri river water appears to state that It Is charged with typhoid and other dead ly germs. To make the statement dovetail with that promulgated by the fellow who claims it produces fat It will be necessary to admit that some people grow fat on these terrible bac illus. College professors are hereafter de barred from condemning Carnegie money as having a taint They can not consistently do it and have a hope of sharing in the annuities to be pro- \ vldcil from that $10,000,000 fund after they have retired from thcjlr work by reason of old ago or over work. Walker I ) . 1 lines , giving testimony before the senatorial Investigating committee , gives It as his opinion that In milking the Interstate commission a rate-making body would be a step toward the government ownership of rnllroiulH. This will not servo to frighten some of the people who bo- Hove that such nn outcome would be the very proper end to seek. Colorado hates to IOKO President Roosevelt , but It Is not the only Hlnlo In the union that desires and demands a shorn of the chief executive's Inter- cut , and In homo HCHRCS there are HtntCH that are more deserving of act ing OH hoHts to n popular president than Colorado , He now experts to leave the state of sensations and scenes not later than May 8. By the time the farmers again have wheat to place on the market , they may bo able to fix It for n return fo the dollar price through the operation of the unions that are at present In process of organization. The unions will probably not guarantee to protect the grain speculators , however , and they will bo wise to anticipate anoth er tumble of prices when the grain Is all marketed. If Norfolk's now administration could provide the city with paved fit reel H In the business portion , n pub lic park , and continue the program of Improvement In the matter of street drainage there are numbers of citi zens who would bo willing to swear by It aa the best thing that had struck Norfolk recently. Norfolk Is moving along some but there are several ob jects In advancing It from the village to the city stage that have not yet been attained. Governor Mickey's friends deny that he had the southerners Intensely ex cited during his visit to Galvcston by stating that the last tlmo ho had been south ho was with the federal army. On the contrary , they say the Inci dent was grossly exaggerated by newspaper rnportn. It Is certain that If such a brief and conservative state ment can rouse the Ire of the south erners , there should bo little Induce ment for a northerner to visit their section of the country , and particular ly If the northerner Is expected to mnko any remarks. The whereabout R of Admiral Togo and his naval force Is scarcely loss puzzling to the HuHslnns , evidently , than to the Japanese themselves. Ho appears to have such broad gunge or ders that ovou the Japanese admiralty mny not know where ho Is until ho strikes , but they have confidence that when ho does once make his presence known It will bo to the decided dis advantage of the Russians. It Is not surprising that Europeans head toward Amorlea at every oppor tunity. In London , it Is claimed , twen ty-eight out of every thousand people are paupers. In Madison county It Is reasonably safe to figure that there are not more than a score of paupers to Its seventeen thousand of popula tion , and Nebraska could elevate to honorable cltl/.enshlp many dozens of London paupers If they came with a will to work , save and advance with the conntrty. The Chicago teamsters' strike Is rapidly attaining the proportions that promise the usual developments of the strike situation In the windy city. In no other city of the world do strikes seem to have such a guarantee of growth as In Chicago , and they us ually develop the force and energy entitling them to national prominence. There Is on affinity between the labor unions that make for potency , nnd the employing capitalist Is not permitted to abuse one of the least of them with out involving the entire fabric of clly labor organization In the contest. District teachers of Stanton county , reporting to Superintendent Hyland give some Idea of the importance of Arbor day In converting treeless plains of Nebraska Into a wood , grove and orchard dotted country. Nearly all of those reporting give the number of trees set out , on the holiday nnd the number totals 1.GS9. One teacher reports having planted -152 trees as the contribution of her school to Arbor day observance. Another reports the unique plan of planting In the roots of the principal tree set out a bottle containing a roster of the school eo that If the tree is ever grubbed out for any reason the children of the fu ture will know to whom the credit is due for having set it out If all other counties of the state did as well in their observance of Arbor day as did Stanton , there should be about a. mil lion trees credited to Arbor day of 1905 In Nebraska. If there Is no other observance of the day than that given by the school children , Arbor day should mean wonderful development of the Nebraska of the future. From thla tlmo on the development of the Nebraska bumper crop would ho good for the weary eyes of the onsU'rner. It would bo a case of the hunter hunted If President Roosevelt should decide to pay a visit to Chicago nt a tlmo when the teamsters' strike Is at IIH height Souvenir hunters are said to be busy In Colorado and It IB likely that tho'price of bear's claws IK up consid erably. Any bear's rlnws will do If the purchaser can bo made to believe that II came from the nnw of the bear laid low President Roosevelt. The supreme court has not yet said that nn election of supreme Judge of the state and of county officials must bo held thin fall and there seems to ho slight hopes for activity among Nebraska politicians for another year. The lack' ' of political excitement Is not as Herlous to the general public , IIH might ho supposed. A Kansas church Is stirred up over the. question of who lion the authority to swear out , n warrant for the nf- rest of n , boy who utole a collection taken up "for thn house of the Lord. " If the church people have faith thai there Is n bell they might with some propriety leave the punishment to the < | lm and distant future. Having had It twice In succession Norfolk pannot reasonably expect the state flremen'H tournament to bo hold hero again this year , and It will ho up to the town to make some other preparation to iMitcrtnln the people of the vicinity. A race meeting about the Fourth of July would not be n bad substitute for the tournament. After the newspapers get through buildlhg the Ashland-Sloux City line and ( jtlipr projected lines of railway It Is possible that the companies and the contractors mny take a hand nnd lay thorn out according to their Ideas. It Is certain that the contractors' MUCH will carry heavier rolling stock than those built by the newspaper writers. If the Japanese and Russian war situationdoes not soon show devel opments President Roosevelt will be Justified In hurrying to Washington and reopening negotiations with Cas tro. The world should bo given some sort of excitement nnd Castro can be depended upon for his share any tlmo there Is a lack In other di rections. Banker Blgolow gave a fine lot of Instruction nt a recent session of the American Bankers' association on the matter of honesty nnd Integrity , but In falling to practice what ho preached has made the mistake of his life. Ills falling from grace , however , does not lesson In a single degree the need of loading a pure and upright life whether a person fears future punish ment or not. Carnegie may hesitate about creat ing a fund for worn out editors under the Impression that it would be an nihilated on the first call , but really some editors are not as near played out as they claim , and the philanthro pist should not hesitate to help the cause by milking It possible for those to retire who should. Surely editors should come next to college profes sors when It comes to pensioning those who lead In educational ad vancement , When a circus comes along with no grand , glittering street pageant ns Its drnwfng card there will be a lack of Interest in the loading and unloading of the big wagons nnd their tour through the .streets ns In the circus Itself , and It Is figured by circus own ers that the parade is passing Into history. It" Is counted that It re quires about ? 1.000 In expense for the average show to give a parade and frequently that Is all the people oome to see. Perhaps , however , when this feature is eliminated there will be a corresponding decrease In Interest that the circus people will not find to their liking. There is likewise qbjec- tlohito .theexpense of the gaily col ored lithographs with which the bill boards are decorated and If the cir cus people take away these two fea tures the circus Itself and the me nageries may about as well be dis pensed with as the big share of the Interest will be lacking. Now comes along the Bluebeard Hoch murder trial to share in the general and IndlHcrlmlnnto jumbling of murder trials In the newspaper columns. Editor Bergo heads his Introduc- ory "A Call to Duty. " Ho evidently icard the call from some other source ; hnn from the majority of the voters > f Nebraska. The people of Norfolk will now invo an opportunity of finding Just what kind of nn administration one l > y the democrats will be after a lapse : if several terms. The Russian war ships undoubted ly feel much safer In waters as close to French territory ns It Is possible for them to get , nnd they are loath to leave Cochin China. The Sioux City Journal Hhows through a late cartoon that while mu- HC ! mny have charms to sooth the savage - ago breast there Is very frequently much that Is savage In muslcnj orgn- nl/atlons. If Admiral Dewey Is anxious to again bo brought Into prominence he might find his services In demand by applying to either Togo or Rojostven- sky. His experience In that particu lar quarter of the globe would be the best recommend possible. An attempt Is now being made to drag the administration , or a portion of It Into the Equitable fight , by nam ing Cortelyou ns president If there IH anything larger than a neighbor hood row in which the administration has not been asked to have a share , It has not yet been disclosed , The Chicago strikers are attempt ing to work Into the deal the chief executive nnd other national Influenc es. It Is seldom that a Chicago strike does not seek to Involve national In terests , nnd It sometimes succeeds , but may fall this effort. Nebraska has not been ns unfortu unto as other states in her legislative experience during the past winter. In Texas the assembly continued during the full time and failed to pass any of the Important laws suggested and now the tax payers will be asked to put up for nn extra session. May has started In to do things right at the very beginning of her term of olllce , and If she manages to continue keeping the upper hand the people who had thirty days' experi ence with April will bo strictly against parting from her even when lovely Juno applies for admission to the year. Counsel Levy for Nan Patterson ev idently undertook to talk the jury in the case to death. Ho spoke on a straight stretch for five hours , almost equalling the record In the senate of Ex-Senator Allen of this state. It has not yet been shown that Mr. Levy was more successful than Senator Al ien In gaining his point The Japanese now announce that Admiral Togo is not looking for trou ble but when It conies It Is believed that he will better than take care of himself , his ships and his men. With the Jap commander not looking for a fight , It Is very probable that there will be none for some time. Rojest- vensky is probably not anxious enough to beard him In his den , as It were , and the Russian government would much rather have an oppor tunity of adding a squadron or two to their fleet In the far east President Roosevelt has won the hearts of the ranchmen , cowboys , and other residents of the nelghbqrhood at Glenwood Springs , by appearing at church services in hunting garb , giv ing them a ten minute speech and shaking hands with every man , wo man nnd child m the congregation. The president has a way of , getting along with people in every walk In life , and his common action at his hunting camp will undoubtedly make him many friends In that section of the country , If not throughout the. en tire west When the attempt Is made to un load negro strike breakers in Chicago by the big department stores that are tied up by the strike , It is possi ble that more trouble will be happen * ing than they ever had reason to an ticipate before. The employer who wants to shake a red rag in the strikers' faces _ , has but to mention negro strike breaker to start the py rotechnics. Time Tried and Merit Proven. One Mlnuto Cough cure Is right on time when it comes to curing coughs , croup , -whooping cough , etc. It is perfectly harmless , pleasant to take and is the children's favorite cough syrup. Asa K. The Klesau Drug Co. Chicago will have to move some to attain the Warsaw record In the mat ter of strikes. Omaha boosters have It on their program to make the metropolis of Nebraska a town of 200,000 by 1910. Where thcro Is a will there Is said to bo a way. The question with Nebraska farm ers at the present tlmo Is not wheth er there will be moisture enough for the crops , but whether there will be opportunity between showers to plant the corn. Warsaw scorns to be quite a for midable rival of Chicago In taking front rank In strike sensations this spring , Chicago has had It her own way so many times that It might give full credit to Its rival In this Instance. The cement walk program In Nor folk for this season Is quite complete , but In the matter of paving Main strict the first stop Is yet to bo taken. With n proper start this question will be settled ns effectually and satisfac torily as that of permanent walks. Norfolk should be a city of at least 7,000 by the time the next national census Is taken and the way the com mercial club Is leading dff should be taken ns evidence that the business men nnd property owners are willing to do their share in the advancement. The Omaha improvement club has undertaken to provide convenient nnd healthy play grounds for the children of the city , a movement which larger and smaller cities might follow with satisfactory results. To keep the children off the streets Is an Impor tant proposition. The Chicago thugs are getting des perate. Not content with taking a re cent victim's money nnd Jewels , they robbed him of his clothes , down to his undershirt , trousers and socks. They are entitled to emulate the ex ample of the teamsters and walk out on a strike If the wealthy men of the windy city are not more kindly to them. Hastings Is preparing to prove that gambling Is not a paying proposi tion. A gambler has been arrested and a valuable wheel taken from him who lost about $3,000 in a raid on his gambling paraphernalia some two years ago. Several men who were In the apartments were likewise arrest ed and will be made to put up for their experience. General LInevltch has evidently adopted different tactics fro mthose of Kuropatkln In the encouragement of his army , but there are soldiers who would resent a general's kiss as quick ly as they would a blow. It would never do , for instance , for nn Amer ican general to attempt to encourage devotion to the cause by kissing the men. They would , at the least , laugh In his face. It is perhaps as Inconsistent as can be for people who accept for the main tenance of schools , churches and mis sions contributions from the most questionable sources to declare Rock efeller's money tainted wealth. How ever the "tainted" wealth from other sources does not come in such lump sums ns that offered by Mr. Rocke feller nnd therein may lie the dif ference. With the team owners of Chicago standing up for the striking drivers and the railroads sustaining the posi tion taken by the team owners , the department stores and catalogue houses have a trio to draw against that it not likely to bo discouraged by the Importation of any number of negro strike breakers. The strikers have an apparently good case and strong support and If they will now observe reasonably good judgment In the matter of preventing riots , as saults and other law violation It would be reasonable to expect them to win their point. Nebraska Is planning -great corn and grain display for the Lewis and Clark centennial exposition at Port land. Such a display will probably have one effect and that will be to give the coast people who were for merly Nebraskans regrets that they over decided to leave a state where such things were possible. They will find a welcome awaiting them , how ever , If they decide that they would desire a return to the country where corn can bo grown and people do not have to grow web-footed in order to exist with comfort. Perhaps , after all , Japan and Rus sia do not deslro the millions in loss of valuable property that a battle between their respective navies would mean , and they mny bo sparring not for a battle opening but for a movement for peace. From all accounts or lack of accounts things In the far east are about as near to a protocol ns it is possible to arrive without a mutual understanding and it would not be astonishing to the strategists if at this time a strong movement for pence terms should be made by both bellig erents. , Wlth Jim Jeffries , champion heavyweight - \ weight , retiring from pugilism and JL the stage ns a non-paying proposition there should be a tip to a number of lesser lights. If It docs not pay the greatest of them all It cannot be ex pected to pay the minor satellites nntl the sooner they follow his example and quit , the better. John L. Sulli van , Corbett and a number of other prominent pugs , have proven conclu sively that there Is neither honor nor wealth In professional pugilism and thcro should bo no Inducement to any young man to enter for a career in the ring. England is about to take to herself another lesson from America In the f matter of statesmanship and Is just now discussing the advisability of adopting an exclusion law. With the mother learning from the child how to accrue benefits from the tariff , the exclusion act , and other measures that have been tested here nnd shown to be good It is a matter of time only , until other important reforms are adopted from the progressive Yankees. When America can show England how to do things , It is certainly qualified to instruct the balance of the world on many matters of civilization and advancement Strictly Genuine.
