mere street fair. The latter event
was attempted to bo given several
years ago .and it rained constantly
during the three days advertised for
the event , while during last year , and

been at their best. The firemen must
bo favorites with the weather manip
ulator , as well as with the common
people.
Norfolk has enjoyed the first half
of the firemen's tournament and If
faces and actions do not hello the
moods of the visitors they have like
wise had a good time and will stay
for the finish. The shooting of a
thief and an unpleasant drizzle were
not the ideal ways of starting the
thing going yesterday , hut they have
been overcome and forgotten and the
balance of the tourney will undoubted"
ly be enjoyed with no unfavorable
qualifications.
The meat packers may find It as
disadvantageous to their Interests to
have a strike on their hands as the
hard coal men did some 'time ago.
The boosting of the prices of hard
coal drove many to the use of the
eoft coal fuel and some of thorn have
not reinstated their hard coal burn
ers since. So In the matter of meat
diet , the people are quite likely to
find that they can get along without
the output of the packing houses and
It will require n campaign of educa
tion and advertisement to get them
to return to their accustomed diet , In

Shortly before church time Sunday
night , Rev. J. Hoffman was called
by a telephone to come to Bassett
and hold funeral services for an old
man and early settler of Rock county ,
by the name of Fritz Potratz , who
died there Saturday. The meeting
for that evening was called off and
the minister left on the 8.20 train ,
returning Wednesday. Mr. Just , the
Lutheran minister of Bassett , was
gone on a visit with his parents In
Minnesota.
Mr. and Mrs. Lorenz Thomson of
Tilden were visiting here Sunday
with his brother , M.-L. Thomson.
Next Sunday afternoon a ball
game will be played here at the driv
ing park giounds between Hadar and
Flattie Creek. A large crowd of spec
tators Is expected and the manager
here has arranged for a big seating
