'PHI , ' vnin.'ni.ir . i.'mnAY . APIMI. ' > < > Him IT IS HERE TO BE DEVELOPED DY BUSINESS MEN. SOME ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE. And Others are Getting AdvantaQes Secured for the City Through Ef forts of the Others United Efforts Would be a Quicker Method. It looks now B though thu Rosebud bill wore not to bo passed nt this BOH- slon of congress. Which fact , while Jt will keep back the trumoiuloim In flux of people Hint had Ill-en antici pated for this spring until another year , will nevertheless have no III effect upon the now nortliwost which has already boon developed the ter ritory along the Northwestern line he- twec'ii Norfolk and Itonosteel that Is already substantially Mettled by busi ness folk of onorgi'tle methods. ' The fact that the Rosebud bill Is not passed tills year \\lll detain for another season ( ho coining In of 25- 000 people who shall be tributary to Norfolk as a trading center , hut it will not take away the territory that already o\lsta in the country to the north and west a country wlilch Is unequalled as to extent by any other district In Nebraska so far as being tributary to one point Is concerned. The Rosebud bill would aid the up building of that country In the Hose- hud reservation , but Kosobml bill or not there Is still a great big Import ant lot of country in northern Ne braska that is already growing and developing and to which Norfolk Is naturally and logically and everlast ingly the gateway. Already the Northwestern railroad has pushed on Into that territory In two separate lines of track , the one on the main line west to the Hlack Hills and the oilier on the Honostool extension out of this oltv. Hnfnrn the railroad went on out from Verdi gris there was a vast territory of fertile and productive land. In it were a great number of people who had shopping to do and shipping to do. Hut they had no access to Nor folk and Norfolk never got to see them. Today those same people can get a pilSMiiiKor Iralu very early In the morning , reach Norfolk just as the warming sun Is peeping over the east ern horizon and stay for coven long hours , visiting and transacting busi ness and returning in time for supper , i Field Expanded. The oiitbranohing of Norfolk was necessarily confined prior to that time because of the limited sphere. Hut with that movement the field so ma terially branched out that Norfolk was given an opportunity If It chose to take advantage of It , to develop into a great deal more than the present town that it is. There are thousands and thousands of square miles in the country that has been termed the new northwest. It is the great range that stretches for hundreds of miles north and west of this city and it all converges hero into the focusing point. There is a wonderfully spread-out triangle which embraces this land. One line of it goes northwcs t from hero to Giegory county , South Dakota. Another goes from hero west to Child ren or Deadwood , If you choose. And the third side , which is as yet un drawn may bo imagined as cutting across from the reservation to the Hlack Hills and enclosing every town In the territory . Not one single town in that great territory , with the exception of those reached by the Pacific Shortllne , is accessible to Sioux City , Omaha . . or Chicago except by way of Norfolk. The little Latin word of three letters "via , " should forever ho pasted in the hat of Norfolk people for that word , on account of Nor folk's location , is one day going to bo the making of a city here. This territory Is all so far away from the Missouri river cities that the advantage of a trading point half way between , such as Is Norfolk , must sooner or later be felt. When another entire day of twentyrfour hours , to say nothing of the expense of carfare faro for almost 300 miles , is taken into consideration , it must ho seen that Norfolk's future is assured. There are things that people want to buy which , of course , can't bo bought in Omaha and must be sought In Chicago. There are things that Chlcagoans must go on to Now York to find and in turn New Yorkers run to Paris to suit their unsatisfied fancies. And just as truly , the people of every community In the world , in cluding the now northwest in particu lar , must go east for certain articles not found upon the markets at home This always has been true and al ways will. And in their going , these people of the territory tributary to Norfolk , are going to find that a great portion of the things which they da- Biro are to bo had in this city. Can't Keep Norfolk Down. , . And just from that fact , it will bo Impossible for a pessimistic lot to keep Norfolk from growing. It is bound to do It for there are people everywhere looking for good locations and the more map must tell tales about Norfolk's future which no human being can consistently con tradict. A number of Norfolk Interests have already branched out Into this new territory and are trying to get a start. A number of wholesale nior- chantR here are doing business In mighty good shape and some of the retalleiH llud that their greatest In come la not from local patronage but from the new northwest. Many of them have Increased that outside trade during the past twelvemonth and those who have not are losing sight of a really worthwhile and ab solutely tangible opportunity. 15very man who goes out Into this territory with Norfolk enterprise , ad vertises Norfolk that much and brings that much more patronage to the city. If that branching out can't bo done on the part of all of the busi ness Interests , In unison and pulling together. It can at least be done In dividually , one at a time , and that Is the way It Is being done. And from the manner In which the commercial club declines to net together and from the manner In which effect I vo systems and plans are not developed , It would appear that the work must bo done ( iiiito entirely by the Indi vidual. Must Work Together. Mut while the work of development can he done that way if It ban to. it must be necessarily very much slower than though It wore by the combined efforts of all. The News ban been trying to do HH share toward this de velopment and toward this advortln Ing of the city. The merchants of Norfolk have looked upon the elfort 'iro'ilv ' as child's play because of the lad that \ery few of them know anything about that country and Its possibilities , Many of them have boon benolltted by the advertising which The News has given to the city through Its going out dally to every town In the district and into the homes of over 2,000 people. Hut they have regarded that territory , for all that , as out of their sphere and something so remote that it was good for pipe dreams and nothing more. And yet they must 'admit that there nr/i turn-it strniitri'rM mum tlm streets of Norfolk today than' there ever wore before more people from the new northwest coming into town on early trains and going back at noon than In the city's history. The hotel registers show it. The hotels are filled every day of the wool ; , and the men who travel out over that terri tory will tell you frankly that The News is everywhere , and that the service is appreciated by the outsid ers constantly moro and more anil that the fact of its being road six times a week Is producing good ro- suits for Norfolk. Some Do Not Appreciate. And yet one Norfolk business man to whom that bcnellt to Norfolk was suggested , lasl week imiuircd , wonderingly - oringly , "Why what is The News do ing for Norfolk ? " Ono retail dealer sold a largo bill of goods to a man Irom Hutle be cause that man's attention had been drawn to Norfolk by The News. It htands to reason thai lie could soil more if ho would detinitoly draw the attention of Iho now northwest to his own Rtoro. hut ho thinks "lie can't get results , " and consequently doesn't try. though ho hasn't tested the now medium. Another business man several complain because The News Is sent out of Norfolk nt a very low rate , while as a matter of fact the rate is made merely to roach more out side people and thus moro thoroughly advertise the town , at the same time making it possible to give to Norfolk a telegraphic newspaper which Is not to bo compared with any other paper in the state of Nebraska outside of Omaha and Lincoln. As a matter of fact , all papers which build up outside circulations do so by giving low rates outside , as in instance of which In Nebraska nay bo pointed Omaha dailies , Lin coln dailies and Sioux City papers , as veil. It not only helps the town by advertising It , but it gives a far great er medium for the business man to alk to strangers and It makes a much jotter newspaper possible. Hut. as the Fairfax Advertiser put t recently , if Norfolk merchants would profit from their opportunity , they must let the people know what they have to sell and must let them know that Norfolk wants visitors. Advertising in some form Is the only [ over that can be made to induce this trade to come here. It doesn't make any difference what kind of advertis ing it is , if It brings results. A base nail team would help because Lynch and Hutte and Spencer and Fairfax , to say nothing of towns up the main line , are all going to play ball this season and would bo glad to bring crowds into this city for games. With the people being reached every day in largo numbers , there is something at fault with the advertiser If he falls to get re.suIt.from judiciously displaying his selling points and reasons why he should bo patronized. FACTS WORTH MENTIONING By Dr. Caldwell. Several years ago while In private practice , I thought It wrong to adver tise , simply because I had boon told so and had not had experience enough to know bettor. After a while I dis covered a valuable plan of treatment In certain cases , and fortunately ob tained a largo number of patients , enough to fully test ray plan and prove Its success. I thereupon prepared - pared a lengthy paper upon the sub ject and read It before the state med ical society. What was the result ? A half a dozen members took the floor to say what tlio treatment had been for a hundred years back , and to claim that the old treatment , though unsuccessful , should bo con tinued , notwithstanding that the now treatment had boon successful. I thought differently and continued to use the now method , nnd made re markable cures of cases that had lii I'll iiniiiiiimccil Inciinihlo.
