The mayor then nominated Win. lleHwIek for ulrcd comml.ssioncr , but on vole of the council the nomination failed of conllnnatlon. 11. 11. Miller WIIH then named for the position , hut the required nnmher of conncllmcn falllni ; to vote for the nominee Miller WIIH not appointed. The public works committee WIIH authorised to purchase two cars of coul for the pumping station from the Suiter Coal and drain company. The nuisance committee reported Home minor complaints but consider ed no action necessary at this time. Mr. Hnimmond reported leaks In the water mains on Madison and Pasmvalk avenues and suggested that they he looked after and repaired. The mayor reported that lie had ap pointed W. II. Law as nuisance inspector specter , ho to do the work without cost to the city. Mr. Wilkinson of the street and alley committee , reported sidewalks , condemned to be rebuilt and repaired , and the following resolution was pre sented and adopted , covering the points presented : "Resolved , Thai the sidewalk along the south end of lot 0 , block 2. Koonig- stein's addition to Norfolk , bo con demned and the owner bo required to rebuild the same in thirty days. Mr.and Mrs.H.G.Urucggomann left on the noon train for Winner to be present at the funeral of Mr. Hrueggo- ' which takes nmnn's brother-in-law , place Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. O. N. Just of Lynch was In the city to attend the stock sale. Mr. Just has boon In St. Louis and is just re turning to Nebraska. He bought some handsome animals. Judge Douglas Cones of Pierce ar rived in Norfolk from Wayne Friday morning , and stopped off between trains. The West Side Whist club was very delightfully entertained at the homo of Dr. and Mrs. F. 0. Salter , 110 South Twelfth street , last night. Six-handed euchre was the evening's feature. Toothsome refreshments \\ero served. Company L Dances Start. The llrst of a scries of twelve dances which are to bo given this \\lnter by the members of Company L , N. N. U. , was hold in Armory hall last night. A largo number of the soldier boys , together with their favored fomlnlno friends , filled the hall and the dancing was enjoyed un til late In the evening. A number of visiting militiamen wcro present from Stanton and Madison , to whom the local company alwajs extend a warm welcome. Farewell for Mrs. S. L. Gardner. Hanluh .chapter , No. 40 , Order of Knstcrn Star , gave a farewell recep tion at their hall last night , In honor of Mrs. S. L. Gardner , which will long bo remembered. Mrs. Gardner , who has always taken an active In terest in the affairs of the Norfolk lodge , will leave the city next Tues day for their new homo In San Dlogo , Cal. , where Mr. Gardner has located In business. A largo number of mem bers wore present to do honor to the departing sister. At the close of the session , after a delightful lunch had been served , a handsome gold pen and pen-holder were presented to the guest of honor as a token of esteem.
