U Is safe to hot your best Sunday
hat that no paupers or boggnrs will
he made In Nebraska bocnnso of that
frost the other night.
Present Indications are that Sir
Thomas Upton will bo fortunate to
got back to his native landallvo , with
out having the extra burden of that
cup to retard his progress. It Is ev-
idenl that ho put forth too great an
effort to lift the trophy and Is now
sick In Chicago with a doctor In con
stant attendance.
Miss Hnth llryun has evidently de
termined to sot the wagging tongues
of the gossips at rest by announcing
her approaching marriage. If her
father will now announce to which
faction of the democratic party ho Is
engaged whether to the popullstlc
or plutocratic type he will also quiet
the remarks of political gossips and
relieve the minds of others.
There Is ono thing that the frost
has not killed , but has rather started
to growing with Increased vigor , and
that Is the annual Interest in football
that manifests itself with the llrst
touch of chilly weather this fall. The
gentlemen of the long hair are lin
ing up on the worlds stage with the
determination to gather all.tho hon
ors and bruises that are tholr's by
right.
Captain llobson appears to bo more
competent to keep his name before
the public constantly than any of the
Spanish war homes. Dc-wey takes
splurges Into the public mind , Schloy
appears on the surface occasionally
nnd Shafte'r bobs up on occasions , but
Hobson Is before the people , ono way
or another , almost constantly. His
latest Is a scheme for entering con
gress from the Sixth Alabama dis
trict In opposition to Congressman
Dankhead.
It now appears that the United
States acquired certain rights to an
Isthmian canal In a treaty with the old
republic of Grenada way back In 1S4G.
It Is possible that if Colombia does
not meet the requirements of this
government In the treaty nt present
pending the old treaty may bo dug
up arid furnish a very good right to
proceed with the construction of u
canal across the iRthnniH. Hut n few
days remain In which Colombia niu >
do the right thing , and If H rofum-H
to do It the I'nltod Btatos wVl ) show
Us hand , but ono the people down
thorn will probably bo forced to pla >
to. The Unlti'i ] States Is not accim-
tuiiit'il ' to running bluffs or bolng
bluffed.
A Fremont restaurant man has an
nntlrely original way of dealing with
critical guests. When a patron begins
to Hint fault with that which Is set
before him and to give his opinions
on the conduct of the establishment
the proprietor and two or three husky
assistants emerge from Homowhero
and assist the man who lacks an ap
petite toward the door , as a consequence
quence It Is believed that the restau
rant man will soon hear nothing but
pralso from his guests and the repu
tation of his menus will advance ac
cordingly.
There tire Indications of differences
between the Interests represented at
the national Irrigation congress. It
seems that the trouble between those
who would bo land barons and those
favoring the legitimate homesteader
are to have a wrestle for the Improved
and Irrigated lands. It Is an 111 nil-
vfsod proceedlng. When the congress
Is about In position to accomplish
something In the direction aimed It
should not penult differences to step
In and Interfere with the work. A
good start has been made and a great
work can bo accomplished , beyond a
doubt , but there must bo unity be
tween the various Interests. Natur
ally the aim of the Irrlgatlonlsts Is to
provide homes for the millions and
land that can be cultivated profitably.
It Is the hope of the country and the
government will probably see to it
that no person or corporation Is per
mitted to gain a monopoly of the lands
lands to bo Improved.
Perhaps frank , fair-mindedness
would grant to the men having as
extensive Interests In a state as have
those Interested In railroads the same
privilege of having a preference for
a man of ability for u position on the
hunch , as would be accorded to the
average voter and property owner.
Therefore , If the largo property own
ers of the state haveas asserted so
frequently by the World-Herald , agreed
that .ludge Harnosould be a good
man fur the place , It would not only
be llatterlng to Uio republican candi
date , but should be a safe guago by
which property owners having smaller
Interests , could fix their votes. So
far , however , as the average voter
has been able to discover , the ntll-
roatl men have expressed no prefer
ence between the candidates , other
than an allegiance to tholr political
parties might dictate. The railroads
have a right to fairness before a court
as well as any other litigant , and
there Is no court on the land , the Ne
braska fusion court not oxeopted , but
that \Vlll give thorn u fair and Impar
tial hearing , or be compelled to hide
their scales of justice. The friends
of Sir. Harnes would bo pleased to
have the support of him by railroad
men , as well , as any other men desir
ing real ability and Impartiality to
he the distinguishing characteristic
of the man to lie honored by the ad
vancement In the gift of the people

Four Eye-WltnesBCB Connect Him
With Murder of Marshal Cockrlll of
Jackson Prisoner Desires to Pro
tect Membero of Hlo Family.
Cynthlaim , Ky. , Sept. 18. The testi
mony was begun In the case against
Curtis .lull for killing Town Marshal
Cockrlll nt Jackson , Ky. Common
wealth Attorney Hyrd intinduced four
eye-witnesses whoso testimony cre
ated Kiich comment ns to make the
situation sensational. The teaturo of
the day was the testimony of John
Patrick , who was compelled to leave
nreathltt county because from his
law olllce , across the street from the
court house at Jackson , he had wit
nessed the' shooting of Cockrlll and
flaw what happened alter the shooting
of Mnrcum. Hut the most sensational
development ) * wore outside of the
court room. Mrs. Ilaglns , the mother
of Curtis Jctt , made open overtures
not only to the attorneys for the com
monwealth hut also to Thomar Cock
rlll , a brother of the victim. After
her conferences with thcso parties
she continued them with Daniel Hurst ,
the fnther of Mrs. Mnrcum , nnd others ,
asking them to Intercom for her son.
Another conference Is to he held to
il ay and Is it Is currently reported
that Jolt may then make n confosslo'n.
According to the host Information
from those who were nt the confer
ences , Curtis Jolt offered , through his
mother , to make n confession Impli
cating others In the feud murders In
Urcathltt county , but he insists on
snvlng his uncles , and for Ibis reason
the commonwealth would not accept
his overtures. It Is stntcd that the
commonwealth's attorney would not
nceopt anything short of n clcnn
breast of the whole affair and they
seem to be confident that such n con
fession would be forthcoming before
this trial Is concluded , ns the prisoner
thinks he has been deserted by those
who were expected to stand by him.
It Is reported thnt Jott has already
made a confession to his mother.
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the oar.
There Is only ono way to cure deaf
ness , and that Is by constitutional rem
edies. Deafness Is caused by an In
flamed condition of the mucus lining
of the Kustachlan tube. When this
tube Is Inflamed you have a rumbling
sound or Imperfect hearing , and when
It is entirely closed , deafness Is the
result , and unless the llnllammatlon can
be taken out and this tuba restored
to Its normnl condition , hearing will
bo destroyed forever. Nine cases out
ot ton are caused by catarrh , which
Is nothing but an Inflamed condition
of the mucus surface.
Wo will give ono hundred dollars
for any case of deafness ( caused by ca
tarrh ) that cannot bo cured by Hall's
Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars , free.
