Finely Appointed Streets , Modern Residences and Fine Business Blocks Churches nnd Schools. The following i the introduction to nn nrtlolo that tilled two ontlro pnKOfl of n recent insuo of the Onmhix Sunday World-Herald : Norfolk , Bitnntod hi the northoiwtorn portion of MiullHOii county in the cantor of n rich farming district , Is ono of , ho ninny monuments to pa h and ontor- prlso which nRtound these unacquainted with the projjroHslvo spirit that ninrlc the provorhhil western hustlor. It IB located on u nightly plntonn at the junotnro of the Kllchorn rlvor with ItH northern brnnoh , the "North Fork" and derives Its name from corruption of the delhiing torniH , north nnd fork. It is impossible to conceive thut but n comparatively few years ago the BOOHO of this thrifty community was nn IBO- Intod spot , uninhabited and generally Bpouklng , unknown. The Indian , wolf and coyotes traversed its imadnlating plain in solitary procession , happy with the lot that had cnst thorn in a lundrloh nnd resourceful. The primeval march of the rugged pioneer in time proceeded over the tidgu of the custom hills , and into the Klkhnrn valley the pralrio Bohoonor with I H homogeneous bnrdon found its way thoro. Husldo the clear , running stroiuiw on the bosom of a rich virgin soil thcso Bottlera inado tholr homos nnd under the benign influence of Nobrnsku'H matchless olimutio comli- tlons organized nnd grow into a strong and prosperous community. The land endowed with a plimtltudo of nutritious grnssos was soon the soono of retuning herds , fat nnd Hleek Iroiu the sustounnco of nature's prodigious bounty. Farm IIOUSOH sprnng up in n night , wide Holds of waving grain being the best evidence . of the wisdom and foresight of the north Nebraska pioneer. lu the midst of this happy Crultfuluoss the proBout city of Norfolk was founded. With natural advantages ns to location , resources nnd facilities , under the sturdy iiilluouco of its founders it grow and prospered and wixs soon an important mart for the products of the surrounding farms and ranches. Major Mathowson , .T. E. Olnoy , , T. 8. McOlary , S.V. . Ilnyos and the other early settlers who had pinned their con fidence to the little villngo with its mill , store and half dozen rude dwelliugesnw n realization of their most sanguine ex pectations in the growth of the settle ment -its present aspect giving little of any indication of its then meager pro portions. This beautiful city , with its wide , finely appointed streets , modern and costly residences , substantial stone nud brlok blocks , buildings nnd latter day facilities , the equal of which can only bo found in cities twice its si/.o , is iudood a mudol nnd will always stand ns a mon ument to the enterprise and progressiveness - ness displayed by its wido-awako citi zens. Norfolk has a population , according to the last census , of ! iS8i ; inhabitants , which nggrcgato has boon materially increased since the last oillcial count. This population is strictly within the corporate limits , the scattered popula tion just beyond these bounds taken into account would ill all probability swell the total to n figure not far below tbo fi.OOO mark. Of the population in and tributary to Norfolk the German and American elo- uiouts predominate. The steadfast growth of this prosper ous city , outside of the oillciout nud har monious oll'orts put forth on its behalf by its business and professional men is duo to the rich productive elements of the soil that encircles the city for miles around. Agricultural pursuits have netted the shrewd Nobraskaus abund ant returns and within the past f w years , in the majority of cases , comfort able competences. To this most im portant feature , in conjunction with the happy facilities of prosperous stock raising is duo the solidity of the city of Norfolk and this item in itself is ono that should strongly appeal to and en courage the outsider and investor to this garden spot of activity , natural re sources and fecund soil. Ono Jof [ Norfolk's enterprising firm's on advertising cards used for outside distribution , states in reference to farms in this section , "They are as safe as government bonds. " This is very evidently true , if the pros perous looking farms , substantial houses and fat bank accounts that are accredited to the farmer of this section , can betaken taken as indication. In the past ten years ! tG,369 inhabi tants found their way Into this section of the state , the total showing a not gain in that time of ten and six-tenths per cont. To the conservative and percep tive man , this brief compilation is of value and consideration. Of Norfolk's banking iustiutions she is well represented with strong and pro * gressivo financial establishments. Fiscal organizations in all localities exert a potent influence upon the gen eral welfare and commercial possibilities of iv city nnd in this rospoot the banks of Norfolk have played an important part. The tidal wave of business depression that engulfed in a mnolstronitof destruc tion many of the conoedodly strong and substantial business communities throughout the laud a few yearn slnco , did not overwhelm that of the nourishing young city of Norfolk , Its bulwark of sound resources , capital nnd confidence remained untouched and unlmpared.i The Norfolk National is one of the most substantial banks in northeastern Nebraska. Its directorate is composed of bankers and business men of wisdom and sagacity , who enjoy lu tholr deal ings the confidence and esteem of the community. The bank has a paid up capital of $100,000 with surplus and profits nggregnting $25,000. , The Oitb.ous Nnttonnl is another banking institution of importance , its olllclals and directors enjoying recognition ns business men of iuterprlso and stability. The capital of the hank is $ r > 0QOO , with surplus nnd profits amounting to $15,000. Outside or her national banks Norfolk has two building and loan associations in aotivo operation , which Institutions liavo boon careful factors in placing within the hands of its enterprising and thrifty wage earners , homes and modest competences. The two associ ations have been long established and are both prosperous and flourishing. The Norfolk Building and Loan associ ation and the Elkhorn Building and Savings association nro the incorporated names of the companies. In connection with the banks and building and loan associations , the city is well represented with various firms and individuals who negotiate farm loans for outside and resident interests. So money has always boon comparatively easy in this center of a prosperous section. The importance of Norfolk as n com- nutctnl nud industrial center has been of sulllcient extent to have drawn the attention of more than ono railroad corporation. The Fremont , Elkhoru & Missouri Valley , Union Pacific , and the Minneapolis & Omaha Hues strive for the business of the community. The Fremont , Elkhoru & Missouri \rnlloy railroad is at present extending its Verdigris branch north of Norfolk tea a considerable distance in quest of the extensive business that exists lu the rich districts northwest of Norfolk , between this point nnd the South Dakota state lino. lino.Tho The Cereal mills , Norfolk Foundry and Manufacturing company , beet sugar factory , oto. , are industries of the city that command attention for their respective products , capital involved and the amount of labor employed. The sugar factory is ono of the most extensive enterprises , its buildings and equipments representing nn outlay of some $ r > 00,000. An indication of its commercial importance may bo gleaned from the fact that its output for last year aggregated seven million pounds of sugar , the army of wago-workois necessary to man , equip the plant nud produce tlu's enormous amount of crys talline substance numbering some 800 men. A rnilroad addition to the city , soon to bo in course of constructionn feature that will add prjstlgo to the city as a railroad headquarters , is the new eighteen stall roundhouse to bo erected by the Fremont & Missouri Valley in the near futuro. The city's two implement houses , va rious drug , dry goods and mercantile es tablishments , indicate the demand for the articles cnrrled nud the generally prosperous condition of the community. While Norfolk has been absorbed in a constantly growing commerce , plans for future business and success have not caused the schools to bo neglected or slighted. Two thousand pupils of all ages and thirty teachers , np-to-dato and well paid , are evidence of this. The school buildings are well lighted , ven tilated aud built according to the best ideas of sanitation and convenience. Norfolk's religious edifices are as nu merous as they are beautiful ami sub stantial. Practically all denominations are represented , the Episcopal , Catholic , Methodist , Baptist , First and Second Congregational , Christ Lutheran , Free Methodist , German Evangelical and St. Paul Lutheran churches being among the places of worship. An impression that strikes the visitor to the city of Norfolk at once aud with weight is the substantial aspect that is associated with Norfolk aud all that per tains to it. One expecting to find in this community n typical western city , with mushroom architecture , aspirations and tendencies , is foredoomed to surprise and pleasing disappointment. No more deeply seated , progressive and striving town will bo found anywhere in the great northwest , travel where yon may , discriminate as presistontly as you choose , weigh the size of the city and compare with others with like proportions tions aud its peer cannot bo determined. The character of the water for the consumption of the city is excellent , and the facilities for handling nud transport ing it the best. The supply is taken from the wells near the north fork of the Elkhorn , about five miles of water- mains distributing nud delivering it about all parts of the city. Electric nnd nro lighting is the fea ture of illumination. A now gas plant is at present in its initial stages of in ception which , when completed , will add additional luster to the illuminating facilities of the locality , Thin plant , It Is conceded , will entail an expenditure of $ : IO,00 ( ) or $10,000. Among the county olllcors who reside in Norfolk are J , .T , Clomontn , shorllT ; Burt Mapos , county attorney ; 0. W. Oruin , superintendent. The city administrative ofllclnls hav ing charge of the olty souls , finances , law and order regulations are : Dun J. Koonlgstoln , mayor ; S , II. McFarland , clerk ; Carl Wilde , treasurer ; S. W. Hayes , pollco judge ; W. II. Lowe , engineer. In addition to the above it may bo wall to mention 0. 12. Hartford , the efficient chief of the flro department , whoso gallant service aud commendable efforts in reducing fires has won him n recognition throughout the state of Ne braska. Ho at present holds the vice prcsideuoy of the Nebraska Volunteer Fireman's association. The city has always boon the seat of a state institution , the Nebraska Hospital for the Insane , but siuco the distruction by flro last August nothing material has boon dona toward its reconstruction. It is confidently expected , however , when the legislature acts upon the mut ter that the institution will bo robuilt. The fraternal nnd social orders of the city nro strong and numerous , compris ing every political , religious , social and secret organization in favor. The on- Hcmblo includes a largo body of adher ents , the societies infusing a spirit of co operation among the members aud sup port commendable nnd advantageous quarters. The Commercial club is a feature of importance to the city Its members being - ing composed of prominent and profess ional men of the community who , in unison , co-operate for the advancement aud betterment of Norfolk. G. A. Lui- hurt aud B. Mapes are among its prom inent factors. The press is well and favorably represented - resented in the city. Tun NEWS ( rep. ) , Times Tribune ( doui ) , AuzoigorGermnxi ( dom. ) , having the interests of this lic.o in hand. The two lending hotels of Norfolk are both modern aud well patronized. The table furnished is good and the facilities for the convenience of their respective guests meeting the staudard of require- mouts demanded. The Auditorium theater has a con siderable seating capacity aud is well equipped and furnished. The topography of the country sur- ronudiug Norfolk is gently undulating. Tbo average acreage yield in corn is thirty-five bushels to the aero ; wheat twelve bushels ; sugar beets , ton tons. It is stated that 2,000 , acres , roughly es timated , are given over to the raising of sugar beets. Norfolk with her ndvantageous loca- tiou , representative busiuess mou , felici tous surrouudiugs nud unbounded re sources , while now enjoying unmeasured prosperity nnd progress , is destined to roacli n goal far beyond her present limitations nud in the achievement of a prominence to bo hers , bring upon herself - self the commercial recognition of th vast aud growing dominion tributaiy to the vigorous queou city of uortheastt-ru Nebraska. Rushing Niobrara Bridge. Piling for the Fremont Elkhoru nud Missouri Valley railroad company's bridge across the Niobrnrn river at Niobrara is being driven. The Verdi gris crook is full of piles which have been floated down from the town of Vordigrio. In the construction of the bridge 11.3,000 feet of piling aud 8,000,000 feet of dimension stuff will be used. In order that the work beyond the river may bo rushed to complete the line before the opening of the Rosebud reservation strip false work will be erected aud trains with bridge material , rails and ties run over this. The grade the entire length is receiv ing the finishing touches aud the laying of rails will bo begun in a week or two. Sioux City Jonrnnl. B. & M. to Fill the Connecting Link Between Erlcson and O'Neill , The following railroad story from the Sioux City Tribuuo will prove of interest. For n long tiuio it has beon'tho hope of many Norfolk people that souio day the 13 , & M. would extend its Sohuylor line to this place , aud from horojto Yankton , connecting there with the Great North ern , but if the link between Ericsou aud O'Neill is built , and a Btudy of the map shows its plausibility , it is likely to bo a long time before the B. & M. outers thin olty. The story printed lu the Tribune follows : "Sioux City railroad men have expressed much iutorest iu the St. Paul special in The Tribuuo of last evening , saying that Burlington- Great Northern systems nro to bo con nected by n line from O'Neill to Erlosou , Nob. Opinion is that the connection is likely to bo made thin season. "It has boon expected for years that this oouucctiou would bo made , " said railroad mail. " before cmo "Long any body dreamed of the consolidation of Great Northern property , it was gen erally believed the Burlington would extend north from Ericsou to O'Neill. Several times it was understood they were on the point of doing so. Reasons for doing it at that time were good enough ; now , with the two systems uudor ono general control , there is much more reason to expect the de velopment. "Of course the Burlington dosn't like to haul its Sioux City and St. Paul stuff to Omaha aud turn it over to the North western to bo hauled to Sioux City. Neither does the Gront Northern like to haul stuff from the north to Sioux City nud turn it over to the Northwestern to be hauled to Omaha. The link from Ericsou to O'Neill would make a round about route , but for heavy , slow freights , like lumber nnd conl , it would servo the purpose. Freight from Omaha north , and from Sioux City south nnd south west , destined to points ou the Bulington system , could bo taken that way. It would in souio measure fill the same field that the Omaha Northwestern is intended to fill ; that is , it would relieve the Burlington aud Great Northern of the necessity of using the Northwestern up and down the rivor. " Fish Stories. Ray Nye went fishing yesterday and claims to have caught 103 bullheads. In addition to his work with the rod and line , Mr. Nye says that ho made a good record shooting turtles. He killed forty- two amphibians nud the forty-third fell dead out of bounds. Fremont Tribune. The best bass catoh of the season was made last Saturday by Homer Robinson , Garrett Hulst nud Homer Mnrtyu iu Polauder lake , seven miles up the river. Their total catch was about twenty pounds , nud two of the beauties were four-pounders. Columbus Telegram. Real Estate Transfers.
