Four of the young men of .West Point are planning to start on a tour around the world afoot on May i. They will take along a dqnkey to carry their clothing and provisions , and expect to earn their way as they go , taking ton little money with them. The trip is notplanued , "on a ; wagor" as BQ many of them are and if the boys are persis tent and made of the right sort of ma terial it may be of untold benefit , Madison. . Star ; The Star has been , in formed that the B. & M. railroad com * ipauy is again figuring on extending its line of railroad from , penny ler to Madi son. This would give us a direct road to Lincoln. We certainly hope that the , rumor , may prove to be a fact.u The city should at once organize and investigate the matter. It would do the city of Madison no good to have this line of road .miss us about nix miles on the east. Center , the new capital .of I nox county is soon to have a place to deposit its money and keep its valuables , Sec retary Royse of the state banking board having issued a charter for such an in stitution. The incorporates are D. T. Oilman , S. E. Lundgren , R. F. Stetson , E. W. Nelson and Calvin Keller. It will be known as the Center State bank and is capitalized at $0,000. There are now three saloons at the now town and other business enterprises are being es tablished almost daily. The Browning club gave a banquet last night at the home of Dr. and Mrs. H. J. Cole on North Ninth street in honor of Rev. J. J. Parker of Kearney , a former member of the club who took much'interest in its welfare. Hand- painted place cards were used and the following toasts were responded to : "Impressions from , the reading of Lowell , " Prof. D. C. O'Connor ; "The Cathedral , " J. B. Maylard ; "Commem oration Ode , " Bnrt Mapes ; "Impres sions from the reading of Browning , " A. J. Durland ; "Andrea Del Sarto , " P. T. Birchard ; "The Ladies , " H. J. Cole ; "The Cri'ic's Report , " Rev. J. J. Parker ; "The Self-Constituted Toastmaster - master , " M. D. Tyler. Ex-Assistant Secretary of War Geo. D. Meiklejohu recently read the funeral sermon for M. H. Ogden of Fnllertou which had been prepared by the de ceased prior to his demise. Ho was an ardent believer in spiritualism and his effort was to impress upon the mourners that the occasion of his funeral should bo one of joy rather than of sorrow. Ho was 82 years of age and a member Oi the Masonic fraternity. An extract from the sermon is : "I ignore the hearse on account of its dark and gloomy appearance , and the expense attending its use ; also for the same reason I dis pense with the services of a minister , with the attending obligations. I have concluded to preach my own funeral sermon. " Egg Social. At the M. E. church tonight only a dime or a dozen of eggs. Engineer Wctzol Resigns His Posi tion at Waterworks City Attorney Instructed to Have Foundry Build ings Moved Off Seventh Street. The city council , mot in regular session at the council chamber in the city build * ing last night with the mayor and all the councilman present except Dognor. Councilman Gow stated that , there was a very bad low place on , Philip avenue which should bo looked after and the defect remedied in some manner. , T.b.0matter was referred to the street and alloy committee for investigation , and action. It was stated that the building o the Norfolk Foundry and Manufacturing company wore partly on Seventh Btreot , aujl shouldj be .removed. 4- motion pro- yallqd that.the , city , attorney bo in structed to take the proper measures to have all buildings on block P , Koonig- Btoln'fcilhird , addition , on Seventh street , removed , from the "street back on the proper lino. G. puncllnmn Walkerstated , that 0. T. Ball had requested to have the street graded on the southof bin prpporty at the Junction OH there is a very low place there , which matter was also re ferred , tp the- street and alloy cpmmittoo. Councilman Brumuiuud made a ver bal request for a permit to bo granted E. B. Kanirman to build a 10 by 14 brick addition to his bakery , and on motion the.permit was given. .The resignation of Ludwig Wetzol as engineer at -waterworks pumping station , to take effect May 1 , 1002 , was presented -and road. The resignation was accepted on vote of the council. City Attorney Powers reported the in surance policy on the boilers at the waterworks pumping .station . as being nil right. The policy was accepted aud the premium of $ ! > 0 was ordered paid. The report of the city clerk for the month of March was read and referred to the auditing committee , S. L. Gardner and others presented a petition , signed by 43 business men of the city , requesting the council to take favorable action in the ordinance grant ing a franchise to the Madison County Telephone company which was read 'and filed. Ordinance No. 2GO , granting a fran chise to the Madison County Telephone company for the use of the streets and alleys of the city on constructing and maintaining its system , was read the the third time and passed its final read ing , the company being required to pay the cost of publishing suoh ordinance. It was stated that the fi.ro insurance on the city , hall and pumping station would expire on May L and the clerk was instructed to place f 1,000 of said in surance with C. C. W. , ho being n member of Norfolk lodge , No' 07 , at the time of his death. . , , MUK. G. W. WOI.KK. Mr , Wolfe became a member of the , A. O. U , W. February 11 of this year , nnd just ono month from that date bin , death was announced. The required proofs were sent to Grand Island , whore , on March 2(1 ( the grand trustees of the order approved the claim and ordered that a warrant bo drawn in favor of Mrs. Wolfo. On April I ) tbq. grand recorder - cordor mailed the warrant to F. W. Koerbcr , recorder of Norfolk lodge , and it would have boon paiditho next .day if it had not mot with a mishap. Mr. Koorbor lives at South Norfolk and us ually his mall is brought to ) iim by ono btthOyhackmen who make regular trips between the portions of the city. The , hackman took this letter from the post- office all right , but on the trip down It slipped down under thq peat box of his hack and by the time ho had reached South Norfolk ho had forgotten all about it. The coming of the letter was anxiously awaited by Mr. Kocrber , and finally ho wrote the grand recorder ask ing what had become of it. The reply that it had been sent a week ago started an investigation , which resulted in find ing the missing letter as before stated under the scat box of the hack. The hackman became very much excited when ho learned that probably ho had lost a $2,000.00 warrant , and ho threat ened to tear his old hack to pieces but what he found it. ' Even with this delay the money was turned over to Mis. Wolfe in just two months from the time that her husband joined the A. O. U. W. Promptness is one of the characteristics of the Work men , and a man who belongs to that order need have no fear but that his family will bo taken core of should he be suddenly called away.
