" Ohlldron rcllcct wonderfully the flo- * ! lal color of their honu'H. Fop awhllo all the pariah was ciitrnjicpd wltJi the now pastor so much BO Indeed that1 a [ whisper against him would luivo been received IIH something between high treason and the unpardonable nln. Tlio Hov. Ooorgo was youngish , fair look- tag , quick and deft In phraHemaklng , euiive. Ho admitted In bis private talks a temper , but snld , with oyeH up cast , that ho kept It under by help of strength beyond bis own. Ho wan Hln- ( lie. That of course set all the mothers u the churuh to work mating him nultalily. Ho saved them the trouble of choosing for him by devoting him- coif to Alison Prior from the day aha came home. If only Bho had been homo from tbo llrst , Tommy would never have been 3'he Whelp. Tommy was Alison's brother and In many ways her chum , yet Hho only smiled when ho explained the minister's sin and mild at last : " 'llcally , Tommy , I don't know Just what a whelp Is like , but you do look very much what I fancy It Is-all legs and arms , so much too big that they arc In their own way and everybody When Tommy had gone nway , how ever , trying to stand very stiff and keep his elbows primly beside him , Alison looked after him lovingly , then turned nnd nhook her list at the recto ry , which was visible across half a mile of fields. If only Tommy had known that ; but Low should he ? He was a very human hoy. lie loved Alison so well he would hnvo grudged her to any fellow. J.t xvas unbearable to think of her marry ing Umt preacher and sitting perked up In the front pews , never daring to siullo or whisper. Besides , there was Ills affront. Tommy Hung himself up on the grass out In the pasture , dug Ills heels In the turf and thought very Imnl , tears rcstlug upon his freckled chocks. All at once something cnmo with a rush , struck him a sounding thwack on the back nnd sent him rolling over and over. As he got up he felt a harder thwack nnd tumbled all -In a heap. When nt last he scrambled up , leaping nimbly aside , to shin up a convenient apple tree , Bliuky , the big Cotswold rani , Btood nt the tree foot , shaking Ms bead up and down , evidently Invit ing Tommy to try conclusions again. Tommy had no mind for that In- etend he sat up among the laden boughs and thought harder than ever. After a little he whistled Joyfully , till- cd bis hands with red apples and climbed down to the lowest fbrk of the tree. Hllnky was nt him In a minute , but stopped short as Tommy tossed lilm an apple. As soon as he had de voured It he looked Inquiringly nt Tom my , who tossed 'him another , redder aind Juicier than the first Twenty minutes after Tommy passed unscathed from the pasture , with Kllnky trotting behind , a pattern of content Every day for the next fort night Tommy gave Bliuky apples , tufta of sweet late grass , , nubbins of corn and pungent dashes of salt and red oak bark , nilnky followdd him like a dog , never trying to butt or chase him , though toward the rest of the human race he preserved an unregeticrate mind. Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. The Rev. George's particular madness that autumn was jjolf. Golf was but an Idle name In the parish until he came td It Fancy his delight , muscular , masculine nnd missionary , In laying out links and teaching his parishioners the game , Alison wns one of Ills earliest and most promising pupils. They snont hours de- iiciousiy together , yet apart , upon the course , Alison was certainly devoted ( to the game. As -whether she wns also devoted to her teacher she herself - self did not quite know. Love may bo slain with a laugh. Tommy was not en6ugh of a psycholo gist to know that , but ho did know Alison , und he laid his plans' accord ingly. Upon a perfect Indian summer after- coon all the golf crowd of their parish met all the golf crowd of another parish upon the home links to settle various foursomes nnd other things. Alison nnd the Hev. George were the mainstay of the home-crowd. Tommy meekly asked to bo bis sister's caddie aind blustered a good bit when he was transferred to Mr. 'Gasket. ' But there was a twinkle In his eye as ho paced eoberly from hole to hazard , from liazard to tec , froiii tee again to bunker. It wna going to bo clone very much too clone to bo comfortable , nnld Mr. Gasket , ifo hlmnclf plnyed n brilliant gnmo when ho did his brat. Hut wlmt with coaching one , manag ing another , welcoming everybody , homo folks nnd vlsitorn nllko , It In not Rtrnngo that ho could not glvo lilfl Whole attention to the game. It wnn n flue coume , with a water hazard In the shape of n miring branch , excellent putting greonn nnd beautiful * ly close turf. It wnn by Tommy's nuggoHtlon that the turf on the Prior Bhnro pf tlio eoUrflo had been grazed down with the ( lock of nheop only two dtij-H before. Tommy Indeed had been wonderfully nctlvo In nil manner of good works for the match. Mr. Gas ket knew hnzlly how his nlcknnmo had Htuck and stung nnd repented hav ing given It , but was tmwlmi qnough to think he could smooth over mat tern by particular complacence to the lad. "We Hhnll beat them by a scratch. We Hhnll ccrtnlnly bent them. Master Thomas , " he said , watqhlug a particu larly clean drive by Alison. Tommy looked bored. "Don't strike mo your gamo'H as good as those other peo- ploX" ho snld , nodding townrd the op posing players. Mr. Gasket tried to look pained. "Whv don't voti say our came , Tom my ? " ho nsUqit reproachfully. "Wo must pull together , every soul of us , If wo arc to win. " "Oh , you've got nil those other fel- Ipwa to rooUfor you ! " Tpmmy said sar castically. "I couldn't do n thing but roar. I ain't nothing but a whelp , you know. " This time Mr. Gasket really did look pained , though ho tried to mask It ns blank Innocence. It > vafl his turn to play , nnd the gnmo was so oven that the fate of It hung most likely upon his next three strokes. Hln ball lay both well and 111 In n place that If ho could successfully loft It would mean almost certain victory , but said lofting required a position neither ministerial nor dignified. It was In n llttlo cuppy turf hollow not far off the boundary. A low fence marked the bounds. Across It sheep hustled and rummaged peacefully through weed grown stub ble. The minister took no note of them nor of anything Indeed snvo the llttlo white ball lying so snug In the faded grnss. Half stooping , half crouching , ho grasped bis mnshlc ( Irmly In his hand' The rest wns chnos plus earthquake at least to the Gasket Inner con sciousness. Friends nnd foes In wntch saw n woolly , horny headed streak as sail the stooping figure , send said flg- uro over upon Its head , then , with vig orous thumps , roll It over nnd over across six yards of turf. Nobody knew Just what might not have happened had not Tommy bravely rushed to the minister's rescue , caught Bllnky by Jho horns and forced him , struggling nuil bleating , back over the fence ho had leaped like a flash of lightning. In spite of doing nil that Tommy wns the llrst to assist Gasket to his feet. "I hope you're not hurt too bad , sir , " he said politely. Gasket was n sofry sight. His trou sers were torn , his face scratched , the eye upon which Bllnky had landed his last thump rapidly going out of busi ness. The rest , hurrying up , could not help Inughlng , Alison clearest , merriest of them nil. As Gasket caught the sound ho said , backing nwny , "The match Is off. " It wns all ho couldsay. Tommy went homo with him , a faithful caddie In splto of everything , but as bo left the rectory door ho rubbed his hands and softly hugged himself , repenting with Infinite gusto : "Yes , the match Is off. You bet It Is. I know my sister all right ! " Why They Were Chcnp. President McKluley used to tell with a good deal of amusement a story wlilch related to his early days In the law. On the way to and from his otllco ho wns nccustomed to pass a butcher's shop and for n long time wns puzzled by a certain notice which ho saw there. In the morning he would rend , "Good pork sausages , 20 cents. " On his re- 'turn ' in the evening ho would some times find these Knusagos still 20 cents a pound , but more often tbo notice was changed , and the sign read , "Fine pork sausages , 12" or sometimes 10 "cents. " The matter , ho said , used toworry him. Sausages were not of so perish able a nature that they would not keep till the next day , and bo could not understand - , derstand It. So one evening he stop ped at the shop , made some casual re mark and then inquired the price of sausages. "Ten cents , " said the shopkeeper. "But , " replied Mr. McKlnlcy , "they were 20 cents this morning. " "So they were , Mr. McKlnley , " re plied the butcher , "so they were. Then I had 'cm ; now I haven't Sausages at 10 cents is simply to get me n reputa tion for cheapness. See ? " The future president saw and wa * In the habit of saying that a great many reputations were made In that way. Polioned to Sure Expeniei. A Ohlncso boy was brought Into the Peking hospital terribly Injured by a heavy log falling upon him. The doc tors , to save his life , cut off bis leg , , The mother came , apparently to help to nurse the lad. The patient ; howev er , almost Immediately afterward died , and expert examination showed that his mother had given him arsenic. Her reason , it Is supposed , was to prevent her son from the disgrace of reaching the next world in a maimed condition. This is n very strong point with the Chinese , who always pickle an ampu tated member to have It burled with them when they eventually die. In this Instance , the family being poor and a whole leg being dlfllcult to pickle , the simpler course was taken of poi soning the boy , so that ho and his leg might go together.
