The keys were taken from Keeper Mcflcary and the two desperate pris oners had a clear Hold. The Ulddlcs went to the wardrobe , where the guards keep their clothing , and each put on a now suit. Soffel , In discuss- , lng the escape of the Ulddlcs , said : "I believe my wlfo furnished the weapons to the Middles and assisted them to escape. This la an awful thing , but I am only tolling the whole truth. My wlfo was not In bed when I was awakened this morning and I have not seen her since. She Is gone God only knows whoro. This Is the worst blow of all. 1 did not suspect her and hence was oft my guard. Hut she Is gone and the suspicion of as sisting In the delivery by furnishing weapons rests upon her. Woodward to Be Brought Back. Billings , Mon. , Jan. St. Charles Woodward , the alleged murderer of Sheriff Hlclter ot Casper , "Wy. , nntl who was captured near Laurel coun ty , Monday , will tonight bo taken back to Casper to stand trial for his llfo. Woodward denies killing' the sheriff. \ The sheriff does not fear any violence for his prisoner. .Before leaving Cas per he swore In a number of deputy sheriffs. Schaffer Finally Set Free. Butte , Mon. , Jan. 31. After being confined In the county jail for four years and seven mouths , 40 months'of which he was under sentence of death , Joseph Schaffor , who killed a negro named Hawkes In this city , , was set free yesterday on the request of the county attorney. All the witnesses In the case are dead or gone. Twice was Schaffer sentenced to bo hanged. Famous Stage Driver Dead. Wichita , Kan. , Jan. 31. Byron Tor- rill , the last of the famous stage drlv- tprs of Kansas , died at Geuda Springs yesterday. He drove stage before there was a mile of road In the state. Ho drove Horace Qreeley , James Lane , General Sherman , John Brown , nearly all of the territorial governors and Henry M. Stanley , the African ex- plorer. Firemen Select Mitchell. Mitchell , S. D. , Jan. 31. The board * of control of the South Dakota Fire men's association held a meeting In this city for the purpose of locating the coming tournament of the firemen. Mitchell -was the unanimous choice of the board and the dates selected were Juno 24 , 25 and 20. Jim Howard Found Guilty. Frankfort , Ky. , Jan. 31. At 11:30 o'clock the jury In the case , of Jim Howard returned a vordlct of guilty against the prisoner and fixed his pun ishment at life imprisonment.
