Green proved herself the most familiar with these publications and was presented with a prize for correctly naming them. E. J. Carpenter's production of "Quo Vadis" at the Auditorium last evening introduced several actors of particular merit and the entire entertainment was very generally satisfactory to the good audlouco that attended. The special scenery was of high grade aud the cos tumes were appropriate. A theatrical production of "Quo Vadis" is at the boat a more sketch of the work and an at tempt to reproduce some of the scones , especially the contest between "Ursus" and the bull , is necessarily more or less farcial , but the Carpenter company surmounted seemingly impossible diffi culties with considerable credit. The ono noticable fault was that the audi ence was somewhat cold and there was apparently no strenuous effort on the part of thecompauy to make it respon sive. Jacob Jaskalok of South Omahn , grand master workman of the A. O. U. We make loans on real estate at lowest rates. Elkhoru Building and Savings association , T. E. ODIORNB Sen. Councilmcn all Present but There was No Business , WANTED CLEMENTS TO QUIT. The Councilman from the Third Ward Declines to Resign , Claiming That Norfolk Is Still His Place of Res- ! donee. The city council met last evening , hut although the session was long drawn out it must bo admitted that the amount of business transacted dooa not rcqulro a very extended report. There were present Mayor Koonig- Btoiu , Canncilnum Brummund , Clem- ontH , Dugnor , Gow , Spullnmn , Uhle , Wcstorvolt and Walker. The city clerk was on hand to make nn aourato record of the transactions , and there was a considerable attendance of spectators. Although nil the machinery was appar ently iu good condition and ready to run , it was like a bucking gasoliuo on- giuo and not a wheel was turned. It is true the fly wheel was given a start when the minutes of the last moot- it g were road and approved , and it then began to slow down. Councilman Brnmmund protested against Mr. Clements hitting on the council , on the ground that ho had removed - moved from the Third ward nud the city. Mayor Koouigstoin stated that as Mr. Clements had removed to Madison nud qualified as sheriff of Madison county , ho considered that there was a vacancy iu the office of councilman from the Third ward. Mr. Clements stated that ho was only temporarily living at Madison , that ho claimed Norfolk as his place of resi dence and that ho expected to keep it as his permanent residence , hence ho claimed the right to retain his seat on the council. City Attorney Powers , being re quested for advice on the matter , sub mitted a typo written opinion , holding that the oflico should bo considered va cant , giving citations from decisions of the supreme court in support of his opinion. After this preliminary showing of speed , the city machinery continued to show its analogy to a perverse gas en gine , nnd refused to go altogether. Ths council was evidently up against something now and did not know just what to do with it. The members looked at each other aud at the mayor , aud the mayor looked back , but all maintained n dignified silence. Not even the usual breaking up into little groups was indulged in , but each mini settled clown firmly in his seat nud no ono budged. The spectators fidgeted about a while nnd nt last one had the temerity to light a cigar. Others quickly embraced the opportunity to do something to break the monotony , aud pretty soon the room resembled nu Indian war couucil.oxcept that it lacked the UBual grunts' of the braves. It IB variously stated that this condition con tinued for from a half hour to au hour and a half , during all of which time not half a do en words were spoken. Finally G. T. Sprecher , manager of the telepouo company , broke in upon the silence nnd addressed the council re garding the granting of a franchise to the Madison County Telephone com pany , requesting the council to take ample time to cousider the matter in all its bearings. Then it was moved by Spellman that the meeting adjourn. Dognor seconded the motion , and the councilman went homo. Fresh eggs at Glissnum'n. BATTLE CREEK Geo.
