Norfolk Sprites Were Out in
Full Force ,
PLEASURE GENERALLY CIVIL.
Strange Noises and Doings Marked
the Eve of All Saints Day Several
Pleasant Parties Were Participated
In Ono Young Man Arrested.
The Hallowe'en sprites were all loose
in Norfolk last night and while most of
the fun was fun , pure and Mmplo , there-
was some deviltry committed that WIIH
not very amusing and very far from
smart. For the most part the boys and
girls were content to iniiko the citizens
aware of their presence with an abund
ance of noise and through sly tricks and
jokes that no ono could object to , and
the parties that paraded the streets with
tin horns , trumpets and other noisemaking -
making contrivances appeared to es
pecially enjoy the holiday and have a
true conception of its license.
It is probable that founders of the
holiday would not have recognized it
had they been permitted to witness its
modern observance but it was very satis
factory to the members of coining gen
erations who participated. Ono of the
popular amusements , apparently , was
the marking of thn windows of business
homes with soap and thnro wire but
few of the windows in the business part
of town in reach of the revellers that ot-
caped. Several telnphono posts were
adorned wi h ehaiis1 , gates , barrels ,
signs and other movable property whih
in some parts of the oily the practice ot
overturning sulowalks and outhouses
to the aiiiioyanco of property owners
and with little pleasure to those who
did it , was indulged in.
Ono party of inoirymnkorH was take-n -
to the homo of Mr and Mrs. .1. W
Boveo after school , where they were en
tertained until dusk , when they drove
into town and paraded the streits until
long after dark. The conveyances used
were lumber wagons and liny racks.
Another party was entertained by
Misses Opal and Yerna Coryelland aftei
an hour or two on the streets they returned
turned to the Coryell homo and won
served with refreshments.
A party was outurtained bj
Charles Gin cko at thn homo of his
parents nn West Norfolk nvenuo and
many other parties were hold at tin
various homes of the city.
An enjoyable Ilallowcu'en event , par
ticipated in by the older peoples , wiu
the party givdi by the Elks at then
rooms in the Maiquaidt block. It va >
the first ball of the season and a larg (
number of Norfolk people and out ol
town guests on joyed the occasion. Tr
the merry strains of the Italian orchos
trn the dauco was continued uufl quid
a Into hour. The club rooms of the
lodge were at the disposnl of those who
did not care to dance or tired of its
pleasures. Punch was served during
the evening.
MALICIOUS DEVILTRY.
One Young Man's Conception of Fun
Brings Him Trouble.
The most despicable tricks performed j
last night under thn guise of Halloween
spott was the daubing of green paint on
the houses of Dr. Bear and J. E. Simp
son , the tearing down of a portion ot
Dr. Bear's fence and the breaking of
John Freythaler'H wagon To remove
the maiks of this fun Dr. Bear and Mr
Simpson will have to repaint their
houses and Mr. Freythaler will bo put
to a considerable expense to have his
wagon repaired.
Dr. Bear and Mr. Freythaler at once
elecided to offer rewards for the arrest
and conviction of the person or persons
guilty of the outrage but before the
offer was published Fred Deering was
arrested as the author of the mischief.
He is n young man , old enough how
ever , to know better , and is now in jail
awaiting trial for the malicious destruc
tion of property. Dr. Bear has ex
pressed n determination to prosecute
him and if he does the punishment of
the young man may bo rather severe
and a lesson to others to use a consider
able degree of judgement in choosing
their Halloween "fun.1
