NOTES FARM Groom your cows. * r The silo is a time saver. Attend to the horse's feet. Grow strawberries for home use. Let the young calves have plenty of sunlight. We cannot longer raise paying ap ple crops unless we spray. \ Seed grain of all kinds is scarce and high priced again this spring. The cleanly dairyman keep the dirt out of the milk rather than strains it out. Whale oil soap may be used to de stroy lice , scale , insects and mealy bugs. Clover and grass seed always do best when they can be started to early growth. Profitable beef production in the fu ture means that better gains must be made. In a gallon of 30 per cent , cream there tire two and one-half pounds of butter fat. When butter refuses to "gather" the cream may be too sour or the temper ature too low. Lack of thorough cleansing of the separator is one cause of flavor in butter being off. It is a good plan to give a cow a bucket of scalded bran as the first feed after calving. The shoe should fit the foot. Don't let the blacksmith cut bars or frogs to make the horse's foot fit the shoe. Field mice been at the young trees ? If the bark is knawed to the wood the trees may be saved by bridge graft ing. Satisfactory results were obtained last year at the Kansas Agricultural college from the use of Kaffir as si lage. Potash , as a constituent of fertiliz ers , exists in a number of forms , but chiefly as chloride or muriate and as sulphate. After starting to .shed their hair in spring cows are very sensitive to sud den cold snaps. That is when stabling pays at night. Clover and grass seed may be grown and a good stand secured , on oat ground during the last of April and the first of May. Narrow doors in the sheep barns are ja mighty poor thing. Broken down hips and early dropped lambs are some of the results. A colt wants to be kept eating and growing and exercising , and anything but fattening , as long as he has a time assigned him by nature to grow. Any kind of fruit tree will die when planted in ground that is all the time saturated with water. The tile ditch is a necessity in some places. Early peas may be followed by cel ery or cabbage or potatoes , followed by late beans or corn , thereby get ting several crops from the same ground each year. A horse must have feet and legs be side weight to be any good at heavy work. Flat bone in the cannons and large , round feet should be looked for in picking horses. Just now is the time to get the start of the lice and a good first move is to thoroughly clean out the hen house then squirt some kerosene around pretty lively over the walls , roosts , and nest boxes. Young mares will sometimes refuse to allow their foals to nurse at first. The mare may be tied in the stall and the colt helped to milk. As soon as it has sucked each teat the mother will usually allow it to continue. A good liniment for all kinds of swellings on dairy cows , as well as on all other farm animals is made by mixing equal parts of turpentine , sweet oil and spirits of camphor. Ap ply liberally and frequently to the swollen parts. If your stable floor is of plank and In need of repairing , the laying of a thin coat of cement over the old and then putting a new layer of planks on it will serve to make the floor water tight and at the same time , to pre- dry rot. Pigs relish potatoes. Cut back climbing roses. Care for the farrowing sow. Treat the young heifers gentl ? . Groom your horses well and prevent skin diseases. The dairyman can raise hogs cheap er than any one else. Old and many young trees are in fested with the woolly aphis. Keeping the fingernails cut may save both milk and mortification. Kerosene emulsion will kill plant lice more effectively than hellebore. There is a big difference between a butterfly and a fly in the butter. Be sure the little pigs have a nice dry place to stretch out in the warm sun. Milk fever might often be prevented by a little attention to the cow before calving. Remember that your orchard , espe cially the young trees , needs good cultivation. The three important elements of plant food are nitrogen , phosphorus and potassium. Alfalfa is the most wonderful of all cultivated plants , and the oldest one known to history. There is no germ slayer better than an ounce of carbolic acid added to a pail of whitewash. One of the chief advantages of feed ing live stock on the farm is the maintenance of soil fertility. It will take good farming to keep up and increase soil fertility without purchasing feed grown outside. Teach the children to respect the dragon fly. This friend of ours kills flies and many other obnoxious in sects. If dusty hay is fed , sprinkle with water , and it will save the horse much annoyance ; but better not feed it at all. A box of ashes under a clump of shrubbery will be greatly appreciated by the hens in warm weather. It is as impossible to estimate the productiveness and value of a cow as it is to guess the exact number of bushels of corn a certain field will yield. The right kind of a farm garden will keep the family during garden season with the help of the hens. It won't take many hens for this help , either. A good crop for the orchard would be cowpeas wide strips sown between the rows of trees. This would make good early hay and is also good for the soil. While sheep will eat grain and any kind of grass and some kinds of weeds , they are , after all , dainty feeders , and the feed must be abso lutely clean. If you intend to raise sheep for wool buy rams and ewes that are bred for wool , and do not make the mis take of mixing mutton types with wool types. The young pigs often become crook ed in the legs , if kept on the hard floor too long , and this means that the pig , if a good breed , loses much of its value. Weighing milk at stated intervals not only tells the owner which are his profitable cows , and which are robbers , but it stimulates rivalry be tween the milkers. Alfalfa grows best on a deep , sandy loam underlaid by a loose and per meable subsoil. It will not grow if there is an excess of water in the soil. The land must be well drained. English farmers do not hesitate to pay as high as $100 for a pure bred sire ram. Do you imagine they would do this if they could get just as good results from a scrub at one-tenth the price ? The high producing dairy cow is an animal that follows in the wake of civilization. She never goes ahead. Conditions must be suitable be fore she can be of any value to the farmer. If strawberry plants are dried out when received by express do not water- them , for water on the foliage will quickly cause the crown to rot. Dip the roots in tepid water and lay them in a cool cellar for a few hours. Four ounces of sulphate of potas sium to a gallon of water makes a , good solution for killing lice on horses. Benzine is also beneficial. Both ap plications should be rubbed in twice , a week apart , in order to do the work thoroughly. Box stalls are safer for fattening horses in than single stalia- , but the difference in ca0 is hardly worth while , for witfc ordinary care horses can be fattened to just as good ad vantage when tied in single stalls as 7/hen confined in box stalls. LINCOLN s rTvf ? * TTr Examination for Rhodes -Scholarship. The qualifying examination for the Khodes scholarship is to be held at the University of Nebraska on Wed nesday , October 16 , according to ad vices received at the chancellor's of fice. Those composing the commit tee of selection are : Chancellor A very of the university , E. U. Graff of Om aha , Chancellor Oeschger of Cotner university , President Perry of Boane college. At the present time there are two men from Nebraska schools attending Oxford on the Rhodes schol arship. These are Horace English of the state university , who went last September , and William F. Haney of Hastings college , who went the year previous. To Inspect Mail Order Groceries. Food Commissioner Nels P. Hansen has decided to comply with the re quest of the Nebraska federation of retailers to inspect all food products shipped into Nebraska by mail order houses situated outside of the state. Mail order houses must comply with the pure food laws of Nebraska. Mr. Hansen will pay no attention to the plea that goods are exempt from in spection because the shipment is interstate ter-state commerce. If the mail order houses desire to test his authority he will meet them in court. Conditions are Good. According to Secretary Piper , the conditions at the tubercular hospital are as good as could be expected. The admission is made , however , that the board of public lands and buildings opened the place before they were ready to property receive patients , a condition which has worked a great hardship and has been largely respon sible for the condemnation which has been heaped on the hospital by half a dozen of the fifteen or twenty patients so far registered there. No New Trial for Morley. It is improbable that Charles Morley will ever again be tried for the mur der of either of the state penitentiary officials who were slain on March 14 when Morley and his two companions shot their way out of the prison. W. C. Frampton , Morley's attorney , stated this morning that he would not file a motion for a new trial , being content to abide by the verdict returned by the jury which tried the Delahunty. case. Reed Released on Bail. Hartford Reed , charged with aiding and abeting Albert Prince in the mur der of Deputy Warden Davis , by fur nishing him with the knife with which the deed was done , has been released on his personal recognizance in the sum of $500. It is not probable that he will ever be brought to trial on this charge , but as long as he is un der bond he can be taken into cusnito- dy if wanted. Manufacturers Delinquent. Six hundred manufacturers have failed to file a report with Labor Com missioner Guye. He has issued a third notice to the delinquents , and if re ports are not filed at once he intends to begin prosecutions. The law pro vides a penalty of $10 a day for each day the report' is delayed. The labor commissioner has fixed May 15 as the time limit for the filing of re ports. To Search for Skeletons. An expedition composed of univer sity students is being organized'under the direction of Professor Barbour , which will search , the famous bone quarries of Sioux county and southern Wyoming for skeletons to replace those which were -recently destroyed by fire in the museum. Nebraska Cattle for Alaska. The United States government has recognized the excellence of Nebras ka's cattle by purchasing six Gallo way heifers to be shipped to the gov ernment experiment station at Kodak , Alaska. This breed of cattle has long hair , and it is believed will do well in a far northern climate. Joseph Teeter of Lincoln has gone to the soldiers home at Milford to take charge as the newly appointed com mandant. Starvation Story Denied. Land Commissioner Cowles , in de nial of the story of a woman from Om aha that she wf.s given meat only once during the month of March when she was a patient at the state hospital for dependent tuberculosis , has produced the chart of the nurses of the institu tion showing that the patient was giv en thirty-one eggs during the month , ninety-one glasses of milk and that meat was served once and sometimes twice a day. Secretary W. R. Mellor of the state board of agriculture has commenced early to advertise the state fair which is to be held at Lincoln , September 2 to G. He has mailed advance sheets of the premium list with this state ment of attractions : The entire Chey enne , Wyo. , frontier day shows as a free attraction before the grand stand , aeroplane flights , $13,000 for harness and running races , * Liberati's military baud and grand opera company , vaudeville attractions , Wortham & Al len shows , stupendous fire works , night races , live stock exhibition , best agricultural display on earth. AID IS SOUGHT FOR INDIANS Catawbas of South Carolina Have Always Been Friendly to the Whites. In South Carolina is the earliest civilized tribe of Indians in the United States , and they-are not the v/ards of the government. These are the Ca tawbas , and they number approximate ly 100. State Senator W. H. Stewart , of South Carolina , is in Washington to confer with the congressional delega tion of that state with the view of having these Indians placed on the same basis as all other red men , and it is probable that a bill will shortly be introduced to this end. "It is strange , perhaps , that the Ca- tawba Indians , who have been wards of the state of South Carolina for many years , should never have receiv ed any recognition from the national government , " said Senator Stewart , "but it is a fact , nevertheless. The Catawbas are the only American In dians , so far as my knowledge goes , that have always been friends of the white man. They never took the blood of a white man , and during all the early struggles of the whites against the Indians the Catawbas remained true. They were in what is now South Carolina when the first whites reach ed that territory , and they have re mained there. "For a long time the Cherokees oc cupied the same territory , and there was continual strife between the two tribes , for the Cherokees were among the most bloodthirsty tribes on this continent. In all the struggles the Catawbas took sides with the settlers against the Cherokees. The latter In dians massacred many of the settlers in South Carolina. "The state government , after having ing taken care of these Indians for so many y.ears , now is seeking to have the national government make pro vision for them , so that they can. in common with other Indians , have lands allotted to them and become American citizens , which is only just and fair.
