Washington. The senate on Thurs
day passed the Gamble bill opening
to agricultural entry 1,200,000 acres of
land on- the Cheyenne Indian reserva
tion In South Dakota.
Foreign Wheat Acreage.
Washington. The InternationalIn
stitute of Agriculture at Rome , Italy ,
haa cabled the United States Depart
ment of AgricultuEe the following
foreign crop information : The area
sown to winter wheat in Belgium this
season is 104 per cent of last season's
area ; in Spain 95 per cent ; in France
112 per cent ; in Great Britain 106 par
cent ; in Canada 97 per cent ; in Brit
ish India 99 per cent Weather condi
tions are favorable for winter cereal
crops and their germination is regu
lar.
Want Lower Rates.
Excessive freight rates and unfair
competition in the state were the
chief objects of discussion taken up
by the State Association of Monument
Dealers which met in Lincoln. Many
of those present argued that the trade
la discriminated against in this state
6y the railroads , in that marble for
Duildingrs and construction work is
differently classified in the freight
schedules. An effort will be made to
lake tnis matter up with the inter
state commerce commission for ad-

Ben Craven Found Guilty.
Guthrie , Olcla. Charles J. Maust ,
under trial under the name of Ben
Craven for murder , was found guilty
by a jury in the federal court. Punish
ment is life imprisonment.
Discussion of Rates.
Kansas City. Railroad rate ex
perts from six middle western states ,
composing a special committee of the
National Industrial Traffic league ,
met here on Thursday to discuss the
rate ruling known as western classifi
cation No. 51 , which is to go into ef
fect February 15. The ruling affects
all railroads between the Mississippi
river and the Pacific seaboard. It sub
mitted more than 1,700 subjects rec
ommending changes in ratings on
about 5,000 articles in the new order
of things.
Scoffs at Universal Peace.
In a stirring address in which he
scoffed at the idea of universal peace
advocated by President Taft and a
multitudinous array of peace socie
ties , Pastor E. T. Russell of the cen
tral conference of Seventh Day Adventist -
ventist churches declared before the
delegates of the central and northern
conferences , in session at Lincoln re
cently , that the last message to a
doomed world is now going to the ut
most comers of the earth and that
Christ is soon to return. Meantime we
are being glorified by his comine.

Veteran Teachers.
State Superintendent Delzell has
made a record showing the date at
which forty-eight pioneer teachers be
gan teaching in Nebraska. At a re
cent banquet for the pioneers it was
disclosed that J. A. Beattie is one of
the oldest in the profession. He be
gan teaching in Ohio in 18C7 and re
moved to Nebraska in 1889. Professor
ser Bessey of the state university be
gan teaching in Nebraska in the yea
1863. He was elected president of the
association formed. The following is

Cannot Test Seed Corn.
State Food Commissioner Nels P.
Hansen .will carry out that portion of
the pure seed law requiring inspec
tion for impurities , but lie announces
that he has no funds to be used for
the purpose of testing seed. He ad
vises farmers to test their own seed
corn , and he gives instructions as to
how this can be done without ex
pense. His statement is as follows :
"Many requests are coming in from
over the state from seed dealers and
planters for information regarding
the seed law passed by the last legis
lature. This department is unable to
render the service necessary to estab
lish the vitality of the seed corn , and
we feel it our duty to give notice that
the farmer should test liis own seed
corn as a protection to himself. This
does not require an expensive germi-
nator , but can be done by placing the
seeds between wet blotting paners
and keeping warm for several days ,
after which the per cent of germinab'o
seeds can be determined "
Wants It Looked Into.
W. J. Ballard , a Kearney lawyer ,
has asked the state food commission
to send an inspector to that city to
file a complaint against one of the
drug stores there. He writes that the
place was recently searched for in
toxicants and that whisky was found
there labeled with such spurious titles
as "ointment. " morning glory , " "oil of
joy , " and even "poison. " Alcohol was
designated by the proprietor of the
store as being "bug medicine , " accord
ing to the letter.

Memorial Tablet Delayed. I
Progress on the bronze tablet which i
is to be placed in thp lobby of the
university temple in honor of E. Ben
jamin Andrews , former university
chancellor , has been delayed while the
committee is searching for a com
petent Nebraska artist to take charge
of the designing. It was hoped to
have it ready to put in place February
15. charter day , but this has been
given up and it will likely be deferred
until the commencement season in
June.
Nebraska Legislative Reunion.
The legislative reunion and bammet
which is to be held in Lincoln , Febru
ary 15. as the outgrowth of the meet
ing of former and present state law
makers held during the last state fair ,
bids fair to be one of the most notable
gatherings ever held in the state , according - i
cording to reports from those in i
charge. j
Farmers of Nebraska are in favor i
of the establishment of a parcels post ,
according to answers to inquiries sent
out by the rural life commission. A
large number of letters have been
mailed by the commission as a mean5
of ascertaining conditions and needed
reforms on farms in Nebraska. The
parcels post is one of the topics upon
which information was desired and
practically every answer received by
the commission indicates that it is de
sired. !
Governor Aldrich has received a
railroad pass from seven-year-old John
Leister Worsing of Huntington , Pa. ,
who is general manager of a line that
occupies one large room of his father's
house. In the absence of Governor
Aldrich. Secretary Fuller wrote a
suitable acknowledgement of the kind
of favors that used to be popular in
Nebraska , but which are now out
lawed. One of the conditions printed
on the pass states that meals and
lodgings are not furnished and that if
the holder becomes dissatisfied with
the service he can get off and walk.
