Dora Barnes and Alice Johnson were down from Cody last week. Charles Carter of Brownlee spent several days here the past week. Max E. Viertel and H. II. Wakefield were down from Crook ston yesterday. E. C. Phipps of Mullen was afc tending to business matters in Valentine Friday. H. W. Morrison and James Hutchinson of Norden were in Valentine Saturday. Arthur Bowering was down from Merriraan Monday on busi ness at the court house. Judge Harrington was in Val entine Saturday night between trains attending to legal business- Mr. and Mrs. Forest Shepard visited from Wednesday until Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Gas- kill west of town. W. V. Kir by of Emmettsburg , Iowa , began work as an assistant in the office of County Clerk Cum- bow , Monday. James Felch suffered a stroke , of [ aralysit ; Saturday at hia home , \\ednesday he was able to walk and converse and in a few days it is expected he will be as well as ever. Mrs. Charles Sparks and Mrs. George Cyphers entertained the ladies of St. John's Guild aid their friends at a Kensington last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Cyphers. Thirty four ladies were present. Miss Dollie Pfunder left Sun day night for Norfolk where she will visit a few days before going to her home in Kansas City. Miss Pfunder spent a few days here visiting her aunt , Mrs. George Cyphers , and family. The Degree of Honor held a public installation of officers on Monday night- More than ' 200 members and friends were present and greatly enjoyed the evening. After the officers were installed everyone had a "good time. " Card playing and dancing , and a two course luncheon rounded out the evening to the satisfaction of all. At a meeting of the county fair boosters at the courthouse yester day a committee of seven was ap pointed to adopt a constitution. The committee is composed of E. C. Davenport , John Bachelor , Dewey Kellog , J. F. Xaylor , J. A. Adamson , Jens Thomsen and James Cowan. The meeting was adjourned until 1:30 : p. ra. Febru ary 10th , when this committee will make their report. Sheriff Dorcey of Thurston county came last Saturday night after a man by the name of Tem- pleton who was arrested here by Sheriff Rosseler. Templeton is wanted at Pender for jumping a § 1250 bond about two years ajjo. He fled to Wyoming and avoided capture. Friday accompanied by his wife he registered as W. R. Smith and wife of Billings at a local - cal hotel. Several years ago there was an organized band of thieves 1 operating in Thurston county. Four of them are now serving time in the penitentiary. Terapleton was admitted to bail and skipped out. Mrs. Templeton accompa nied the sheriff and his prisoner to Pender. Estrayed or Stolen. Scott Banks is on the sick list this week. Mike Jordan of Arabia was here Monday on business. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Overman spent Monday in Valentine. Jake Sauerwein transacted-bus'- ness at the county seat Tuesday. Mrs. Hunt is keeping house for H. E. Schosser during his wife's absence. After two weeks' services , re vival meetings closed Sunday evening. "Ed Pike is buying up a car of hogs this week that he expects to ship to Omaha. Wra. Strube expects to ship a car of horses to Scribner Wednes day and will hcU a public sale on Saturday. Charles Brown came up from Valentine Monday enroute to the German settlement where he has been engaged to teach the balance of the winter term. II. E. Schosser returned from Omaha Sunday evening where he spent several days with Mrs. Shos- ser who is taking treatment for throat trouble.N He reports that she is getting along very nicely and expects her home in about three weeks. . W. E. Searby intends to sell at auction at Crookston the entire stock of merchandise that he re cently traded for at Foster , Nebr. Sale commences on Saturday Feb- rubary 10 , and will continue each Saturday until sold. Watch for bills. junior Normal. On Thursday morning of last week Supt. Eaton returned from Lincoln , where he attended the session of the Principals of the Junior Normals of Nebraska. Mr. E-iton was appointed as Principal of the Valentine Junior Normal having received official notion of his appointment from State Supt. Delzell several weeks ago. A very pleasant and profitable meeting is reported. A decision was made to have the Junior Nor mal session open the 3rd of June instead of the 10th as was pre viously announced. A great many topics of interest were dis cussed pertaining to things which will materially benefit teachers and pupils who wish to avail them selves of the benefits of the com ing session. Many valuable sug gestions were offered by State Supt. Delzell who showed himself in absolute command of the situa tion from the start. Advertising matter will be sent out to all teachers and others in terested as soon as it is received from the state department which will probably be about the 20th of February. Anyone wishing information mation pertaining to the coining summer session of the Normal may obtain same by writing G. W. Eaton , Prin. , or Miss Thackrey , Registrar , the address of each be ing Valentine. All correspon dence will have prompt attention. Womans' Improvement Club. There will be a business meet ing of the Woman's Improve ment Club on Thursday , February , at the court house beginning promptly at 3 o'clock. B. I. Johnson has received a check for SU.30 from the InterState - State .Business Men's Accident Association of DesMoines , Iowa. Mr. Johnson was sick for several days. Some did not believe the company was reliable.
