Seed Corn Condition is a
Serious One.
*
Omaha , Nebr. , Jan. Ii , "The
condition of the seed corn of the
state is in even worse condition
than at first anticipated , " said
Prof. C. W. Pugsley of the Ne-
craska Experiment Station in an
address to the Nebraska Farmers
Congress , t a session held at the
South Omaha Live Stock Ex
change last Friday.
k'We have extended our tests so
that seed from more than thirty
eounties in the state has been ex
amined and we iind that the situa
tion is critical , " said he. ' 'Unless
.you farmers test your seed corn
arsd are absolutely sure it willger-
inmate , you are going to be dissap-
poiuted when the cr ; ns are liar-
i'
\esled.
" \VcIl \ versed farmers , who
have made a study of sped condi
tions tell me that they have never
seen such a grave condition. The
corn belies its looks. Some of it
has the outward appearance of
good corn but on the inside it is
dead. The only way you can as
certain the condition of your corn
is by testing it. You must test or
take the consequences.
" 1 fear you do not realize the
condition. And I wa t you to
know just where you stand. The
Commercial-Club of Omaha is tak
ing an interest in the proposition
and you'should co-operate by not
only testing your own corn but by
.
urging year neighbors to do the
<
same.
' 'Don't iakeanything for grant-
cl. lie sure of your corn before
you plant it. You have ample
time now. But a mouth from ,
now it may be ion late. "
\j
The Farmers Congress , by Resolution
elution , unanimously endorsed the c
o
campaign urging the testing of
SJ'ed corn and pledged their co-oj -
eration to that end. According to
Processor Pulley , very few sec
tions have been found where there
is enough good seed corn for the ,
community. At present his department -
&
partment is working to ascertain
the localities which have more
than they need. As soon as this
determined , the farmers of Nebraska -
o
braska will be informed , so that
they can secure corn that will pro
duce a normal crop. ci
Unless the right kind of seed is i S
planted , the loss will be enormous.
Only by a proper testing of seed tr
corn , can a normal yield be se tisi ti
cured. The continued cold weath si
sitl
of the past month is making tln
the condition even more serious tlh
than it was. Corn stored in cribs h
has more or less moisture and the
continual cold weather is killing S (
the germs by freezing.
An extensive campaign is being
wagpd' by the business men of A.
who roulizo that thesite-
ation is a grave one. The various
commercial interests are putting
their time and money at the dis
posal of the committees , which
are urging the testing of seed
corn.
corn.Test
Test your seed corn , farmers ,
and reap the benefits.
The usual hospitality shown all
visitors at the Live Stock Ex
change at South Omaha was very
much in evidence when the Far
mers Congress were their guests
on Friday. A good program was
prepared , after which a dainty
luncheon 1 was served in the Ex-
c tange dining hall.
