The new "contest * notices are much longer than'the old and it has been decided that a publisher is entitled to legal rates for pub lishing these notices , which is § 1.00 per square for each ten lines for the first publication and 50 cents for each additional insertion. We bear that The Searchlight has wrested itself from the grasp of two of its leaders , who played it strong for individual ends. In their bitterness now , it is said that tney ha.ve remarked that they could sue for libel but , probably they wont. There seems to have been a general investigation ofthe , book accounts , with a prominent attorney to help in the settlement. Perhaps , in this case , it were bt-t * | j ter to have been a " .never. w.uS5zer'JJ * * * i * * t * than it * "has beener. " \ Iowa's stand-pat governor has vetoed the bill passed by the leg- is lature to elect senators- accord ing to the Oregon plan. He gives as his1 reasons the attempting to do indirectly that which cannot be done directly , which he claims is an evasion of the constitution , which provides that U. S. senators shall be elected by the legislatures , . Do you suppose he is just as areful to follow the letter of the constitution in every particular ? Iowa's legislature is still in a dead-luck trying to elect a U. S , senator , and this should have been a good excuse-for the governor to ; ry to remedy an evil of the in spired constitution , which he wouldn't take the initiative of correcting. No , sir. Not he. We look forTe To wans to turn him down in the * future. Jay Gould was a surveyor , ! * canvasser and later a great railroad builder. He died at the untimely age of 5i and left a for tune estimated at 70 millions to lis children , the principal man agement of which was placed in he hands of his eldest son , eorge. George was a bright young man and fully capable as business men are judged upon their merits , but under the .pernicious practices of the "past twenty years in high inance he has-been ground under the wheels of larger caravans. Kecently we read of the manipu- ations in which the Rockefeller nterests have crowded the Goulds Tom the management of the Mis souri Pacific and we picture the decline of the Goulds as in evitable. The theory that three genera tions , only , carry men from shjrt Bleifrte ft hitfi finantb to shirt sleeves , is the result of the American wide open policy of stock manipulations and discrimi nations. Perhaps they can enjoy the' title of a "has beener" better than a "never wuzzer. " Why this decline in great men's progenitors ? The pace seems too rapid for the children to keep apace. The .man who succeeds abnorm ally may have too little time to in struct his children , and counting largely upon long life , he draws too strongly from his nature's bank account to carry out his de sires and finds himself 'overdrawn and discredited when he fails to re-establish the reserve force so necessary for a hard struggle with rugged competition and the strat egy oftentimes makes the turn of tables and the vigilant worm is na'bbed up for being out so early or aggressive. The moral seems to tjhat men , after reaching McKinley summit of should be more content to summon their forces tc tain their position rather continue on dangerous grot- further advances. ' . Build up a reserve force and teach the details to 'your progeny. * - - * - - - Kock Springs coal at Fischer's Hardware. 51 Furnished rooms > to rent by day or week. Hot and cold water baths included.
