Even the I Populists at that time did not demand I that the nomination of candidates for I public office be made by the popular vote. . , County option is prohibition when ever it is anything : , bc-cause a vote by the county to grant licenses leaves the situation exactly as it now is , op tional with the cities and towns of the county to either grant or refuse licenses , while a vote against granting I licenses puts the towns of the county under a prohibitory law. How absurd , then , it is to contend that a law that never does nor never can do anything but prohibit towns from granting - censes that otherwise would grant them , is anything but a prohibitory law. The fact that the independent prohibition party that has had a sep- arate ticket in the field in Nebraska every year since the Slocumb law was . . . passed , down to the present time , has withdrawn its ticket from the field this year ; and advised all prohibitionist to vote the Republican ticket , makes it i , difficult for the State Journal and tie Republican leaders to explain to their constituents . that that a pro ib- itory law is f not a prohibitory law. . The business and professional mea of the city of Omaha have united in a pretest against the campaign of villi- fication and slander that is being con ducted by the Republican press and I speakers of the state against Mayor Dahlman. They have caused to be printed an elaborate array of facts and figures to show that under the ad- ministration of Mayor Dahlman the city of Omaha has prospered both materially and morally as never be fore ; that while the city has grown greatly in population and wealth dur- ing the incumbency of the present mayor , the number of saloons has de- creased and public improvements of all kinds have exceeded any former period accompanied by a gradual re- duction in the tax rate. They also show that the city debt has been re- duced a considerable amount in the same time. The statement published was prepared by a committee of the Omaha Commercial club from the offi- cial records of the city and are certi- fied to as being correct by the heads of the departments. The business rcand professional men , together with the home owners and honest laboring men of Omaha , are very generally ar- dent supporters of Mayor Dahlman in : his candidacy for the governorship. It is freely predicted in that city that I Dahlman will receive two out of three of the votes cast on election day in I that , city. - - - - Contest Notice. : U. S. Land Office. Valentine.
