the business and worked. at it at
Rosebud where he also managed
the electric light plant.
Clyde J. Wright socialist can-
didate for Governor , spoke at the ;
court house last Thursday evening
to a good sized audience. He is a
pleasing talker and those present
were entertained if not convinced.
It is a revelation to watch Mr.
Phelps make photos of children.
He seems to have unbounded tact
and skill , and can bring out just the
little expressions that you like. He
will be in Valentine only two days
before Xmas , Nov. 18 and 19.
Dr. Barnes , theeyesigbtspecial-
ist i of Omaha , will be at the Dono-
her hotel Tuesday , ftov. 9 , all day ,
,
and at Woodlake Friday , the 11 ,
until 3 o'clock. He has been vis
iting this town for 12 yeare , and
patients will be given a year for
examination , without extra charge.
Fred Buchle" and family , who
live six miles south of town , were
in Tuesday to have a pin extracted
from the throat of their three year
old daughter , who had swallowed
it a few hours previous. Dr.
Compton sscured the missplaced
article of utility in with little dif-
ficulty.
Carl Freeman spent several days
in town visiting friends this week.
He lived in our town several years .

Democrat. He was a good work-
er. , . He is now district manager
for a Portrait , Co. , for which he
has . been . we rking several years.
Mike Clynes came in Saturday
from his ranch southwest of town.
While he is now looking fine he
reports that he had some sort of
a stroke that caused him to lay un
conscious for over an hour a week
or so ago. As he was alone at the
time his phone was useless as an
aid to secure assistance.

Capt. ' Ho well , who has been
visiting with his son.in-law Wm.
Taylor for the past few weeks , left
Sunday night for his home at
Grand Island accompanied by his
daughter Mrs. Taylor. The Cap
tain was once an old time resident
of Valentine , is an old. soldier , a
republican and an enthusiastic
Dahlman man.
There seems to have been a mis-
taken impression about Mr. Phelps
coming to Valentine regularly. He
will not "in / any case come to Val
entine more than two or at the out :
side three times a year. It is hard-
ly to be expected- that a man carry.

' . . PxySatJford .came toi town.Sun
day to get his pay for 180 head of
cattle , which he sold to the cattle
buyer who took them at the ranch.
They brought him al out $4,000.
Mr. Sanford has about 25 head of
cattle left and about 40 head of
horses which he thinks is enough
to keep him busy , but he may go
to Canada to visit his son George
during the winter. Gets cold up
there ; this is far enough north for
us.
John Gould was in town this I
week and departed for New Town ,
Mo. , to join the Fontanelle Thea-
trical Co. , in which John plays
"Silly Boy , " without the necessity
of a red wig. John is something
of a musician and has consider-
able stage talent. He grew here
in our garden and Valentine peo-
ple know for they have been
shown. John says his red hair
and freckles have at last been
recognized as good for something ,
and we predict that John will be-
come a star though he may never
learn to dance a clog.
Several new hot water heatino-
plants have been installed in Val- .
entine this fall. Chas. Sparks
came first and has been longing
o o
for : cold weather ever since to giye
it a good test. Next L. C. Sparks
threw away his stoves and furnace
and put in a good hot water heat-
ing 53 stem. Then came Henry
I enig , and put it in himself with' .
the assistance of R. Andersen and
the Indian who helped Frank.
VIoore with the Court House steam
plant. Then came Gus Carlson
with a job turned out for the
Episcopal church ? , and another for.
John Eaton , of Valentine house.
