"Wednesday * afternoon , Septem- ber 28th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Sillian , occurred the marriage of their daughter Sylvia to James Cloyd ] - Quigley. Rev. Mr. Phelps , of Bellevue , officiated. . f The rooms were effectively dec- orated in asparague ferns and cut flowers-with quantities of pink and white tulle bows. Over ' the lace curtains at each window hung fes- toons of ferns and the t daintyness was accentuated by pink and white butterflies. In the large living room where the ceremony was performed , the bay window was converted into a latticed bower of ferns , smilax and white tulle. Un- der the archway Dr. Phelps with Mr. Quigley and his best man , Mr. Walcott , awaited the bridal party. To the raeldy of Lohen : grin's wedding march , played by Miss Zora Fitzgerald , two little cousins of the bride Tliersa and Dorothy Killian drew white ribbons from the hall to the bower , making an aisle through the bridal party pro- ceeded. Miss Jess Killian , the bride's sister and maid of honor , came alone , and following her was the bride and ber. father. The ceremony was 'short , but very im pressive and beautiful. An informal reception . followed during which the guests had an opportunity of seeing : the many elegant gifts. The bride wore a white satin gown over taffeta , trimmed in duch- esse lace. She carried a shower bouquet of white roses. Her going away suit was dark brown broad- : cloth1. Miss : .Jeps Killian wore a green , marquiStte net over white messallne. It was trimmed ina dainty design of pink rose buds. She also carried a boquet of pink roses. Miss : Pauline Bush invited the guests to the dining- room where i they were served refreshments , fur i ther accentuating the color scheme. This room was a fairy bower of pink and white. The house had been darkened and was : lighted I throughout with the soft glow of ' candles. Here they were pink in crystal sticks and struck such a l charming note of harmony with the pink butferflies : that clung to the portiere of asparagus ferns. Miss Florence Chapman sang de lightfully. She waR accompanied by Miss Zora Fitzge 'ald. ' About one. hundred guests were present , many from out of ' town. The bride'is a member of Pi Beta Phi Society at the University of Ne- braska , and a number of her sisters j attended the wedding. ! , Mr. and Mrs. Quigley will live in Valentino Nebr. , where Mr. Quigley is engaged In business. For sale by Chapman , the druggist. . . . From the U. Department of Agriculture , Forest Service. . - - . In an action for fire trespass on I ! the Black Hills National Forest' ' brought by the United States I against the Missouri River and Northwestern J&ailroad , the jury I has awarded damages to the Gov- i ernment not only for the loss of merchantable timber but ( ' also for the destruction of unmerchantable I young growth. This is regarded by Government officials as establishing a very im portant precedent. So far as is ' known at the U. department of agriculture , it is the first time that any court has recognized what forestors call the "expectation value" young growth as furni h- ing ' a basis for awarding damages. The difficulty in the way of ' such ' an award in the past has been that there was no way to prove to the satisfaction . of the courts the money value of the loss suffered. The award in the South Dakota case followed the presentation of evidence as to the cost of work in reforesting which the government I ' is actually doing in the Black Hills. I I The amount claimed for the young growth burned was § 12 an acre , - - ' I and the claim under this item was ; allowed in full by the jury. . The I total amount of damages ' claimed . . . i was 3,728:85 , of which 2,634.45. . ' was .for merchantable timber de stroyed or injured by the fire. It . . is . recognized by foresters 'that the cost of artificial refores- tation will not always furnisl a ' fair basis for estimating the ; damage , to forest reproduction. Where new growth can be expected by natural sowing from seed-trees on - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - , , . . . ' . ' ' - - . " - . . . . ' " .r- , - . . . . ' . To meet such cases what are known as "yield tables" are being prepared. By the use of these the loss can be shown in terms of the final crop and the time necessary to produce it. Thus , if it is known that ten thousand feet of timber per acre can be cut once in seventy years , it is easy to calculate the value of the crop when it is ten years old by discounting from its value when mature. In European countries where forestry has been long practiced this method is regularly ] applied in selling , condemning , or estimating damages on forest pro- perty. It is also used abroad in insurance , which would be im practicable if there were not both an accepted basis for determining . the loss suffered and a reasonably accurate knowledge of the hazard involved. , i . . - 1 . .
