seat. He lives now in the new pre-

John Scheerer of Artesian S.D.
is in town today filing on a home-
stead south Merrimau. . He mar-
ried Mrs. Lizzie Mounier : of Kil-

coming back to Cherry Co , to live.
Jim Felch has opened up a res-
taurant ; iu connection with his
fruit stand and is now serving hot
meals. Misses Kalblinger and Co-
hota are assisting with the work.
Jim now has the whole loner
room.
On Sunday next there will he
services as follows in St. John's
church : Sunday school at 10 , Holy
Euchorist with sermon at 11 a. m.
Evening prayer and address at 8
p. m. Litany and choir meeting
on Friday evening.
Frank Brayton has solved the I
washwoman question this week by
getting an electric : washing ma-
chine which has a wringer com
bined ' at the top and all is run by
an electric motor , while Mrs. Bray- ;
ton can sit comfortably in the
rocking chah .and read.
Miss Elsie Schreiber , instructor
in the Wisner public schools , and
Miss Anna Ryan , also of \ \ ' isner ,
were visitors in the city between
trains Sunday en route to the Hot
Springs and Black Hills. They
were guests of Mr. Raymond :
Pierre , manager of the dry goods
department of the Red Front , who I
was formerly located Wisner. .
Lewis Mosier , of Huron , Kan. ,
is here visiting Felix Nollette. He
lived here sixteen years ago on a
claim in the Sand Creek valley.
He was back here eight years ago
but he notes many improvements
since then and thinks this country !
much better than he had supposed '
and also admires our town of Val-
entine with its broad streets , and
cement sidewalks. Felix Nollette
came in with him and they visited
many old friends around town

Glenn Wade , mother and broth-
er are visiting relatives and friends
at the old home in New Carlislo . ,
Ind. They departed Thursday of
last week and expect to be absent
a month.
Eugene Grace and. wife and
grand-daughter went down to Ne-
ligh and from there to Adair , la. ,
to visit relatives. A brother of
Mr. Grace is expected there from
New Jersey.
Dr. Lewis is in Denver , having
been called by message from his
wife Sunday announcing the seri-
ous illness of Albert. Tuesday
Jim . received , a card saying Alferd
was improving.
Nelson , the young son of Wall
Hamer , who has been very ill at
the home of Mrs. Lay port the past
week , was taken to Omaha Tues-
day night to be operated upon for
appendicitis. The little girl who
had been suffering an attack of the
measles is improving.
Miss Nellie Easley is here visit-
ing friends and has been employed
to teach in the Ainsworth school 1
beginning in September. Miss
Easley tells us that her parents are
doing nicely in Bloomington ,
and have a nice home with beauti-
ful surroundings and they are all
enjoying good health.

Spencer and Allen T. Forgy were
up from the south country last
Friday and found time while in
town to call at our office for a
friendly chat. We're always glad
to see the boys from a distance
when they get to town.
Mrs. C. S. Reese came to town
Sunday to consult a physician for
her eyes , they being swollen and
inflamed. They think there is a
poison vine or weed down in the
hay' valleys ; that is the cause as
eeveral others have suffered in a
similar : manner south of Simeon
recently and also in previous years.
The city electric light poles have
been set and the wires are being
strung. The steel } tank is being
erected upon the hill north of town
and there is a force of men work-
ing upon the new city dam but the
work seems to be progressing very
slowly. ' \ \ ' inter will soon be here
and the work will not be complet
ed if they don't get busy. It will
soon be two years ; since the city
voted 42,000 bonds for this work.
Archie B. Roosevelt of Oyster
Bay , N. Y. , and R. C. Paine of
Brookline , Mass. , are touring the
west and came into Valentine from
the west yesterday : morning ac
companied by Seth Bullock of
Dead wood. After breakfast at
the Doneher they were taken to
Kosebud by John Anderson in his
auto where they will be the guests
of Major Wood for a few days and
returning to Valentine will go east
to Chicago , stopping enroute at
Omaha.
The Valentine ball team started
out Sunday morning for a trip in
the east part of the state where
games were scheduled with three
different teams the first of the
series being with Wisner Sunday
and resulted 7 to 6 in favor of
Valentine. Monday's game was
lost to Stanton 3 to 2 , but the two I
following games with the same :
team were captured 6-3 and 8-3.
Today our boys are entertaining
the Norfolkites and will return
home tomorrow to rest ' up for a
tussel with Stanton on the local
grounds , a 4-game series having
been arranged for , after which the
boys will go into camp on the
Minnechaduza.
