Jesse McVey : , of Wood Lake ,
was iu town Monday : attending to
necessary shopping , greeting ac
quaintances and looking after mat-
ters of business. He says evdry-
thing continues lovely in his neigh-
borhood , and though ' crops ' fall' 1
short of some other years ; when
conditions were more faborable ,
none have aught of which to com-
plain. Jesse wore an unusually ,
broad smile when he called to re
new for this household companion
for another year and the reason
for same was that he had in his
possession a deed for a fine section
located about 20 miles southwest
of Wood Lake having proved up
on'same that day.
Ljghtning demolished , a barn on

the loss of horses , buggy and har-
ness. The barn was insured : W.

with the .local agent , I . M. Rice ,

"The Press , a power for good or
evil , " was the-subject of a forceful
sermon by Rev. J. M. Caldwell D.D.
at the Presbyterian church Sunday
morning , in the course of which he
said many kind words for the press
of the land and the power for good
disseminated through its columns.
At the same time he paid his re
spects , in terms not to be mistaken ,
to the newspapers that exert such
a powerful influence for evil. Most
all newspapers he said have some
of the bad mixed with the good but
Tire not to be dispensed with because.
. of the bad. The press is an inval
uable means of communication and
education , within the reach of all ,
and no one is so poor or no one's
time so : : limited that iie cannot af
ford to takeand read at least his
home.paper and one of the dailies.
The history and wisdom of the
world can be known only by read-
ing and newspapers and good books
should be in every home for our
own increase of knowledge as well
as to enable us to deliver and make
out that knowledge to others.
