Parker came home from the east where she was call- ed to attend the funeral of her father , who died suddenly. Mrs. W. Honey , Mrs. N. J. Uck , Mrs. Barnes , Mrs. ' Lyons , and Mr. and D. Parker went to Hot Springs for their health. -W. F. Parker and Dr. J. M. Tische spent a few days at Dew- ey lake l and returned with a liber- al supply of fish for the town folks. The Frank Ferguson Horse Sale Saturday last was a failure owing to the lack of buyers , but Frank has some good young : mares for sale. "YV. A. Parker has had a cement foundation put under his store and has a fine cement cellar now for the keeping of potatoes and other vegatables. A. PI. Lotspeich had a shoe sale on Saturday and some great bargains were sold. These sales will continue weekly so as to make room for the fall and winter goods. Wood Lake had a banner busy day on Saturday July 16 , the best on record for the past year. Wagon loads one after another , Washington News. ( By a Special ] Correspondent. ) So Congress passed the corpor- ation tax , but jockeyed the people by purposely failing to provide funds for the handling of data which would come in under the publicity "clause. Even this was enough. Congress , in the session just closed , completed the swindle on the public by striking out the I publicity feature all together ! And Mr. Taft himself had declar- I ed the publicity clause was the most valuable feature in the bill ! How long are the People going to stand for such treachery as this ? Senator Clapp of Minnesota ' , Republican insurgent , was recent- ly giving me an interview on the justness of a tax , on incomes. Fi nally he stopped abruptly and pointed out of his window. "Ta- venner , " he said , 'notice that marble wall yonder. Which stone bears the greatest weight ? The stone at the bottom or the one at the top ? Before you answer I will : add that is just the .way it is without an income tax. Until the present tariff schedules are revis- ed along lines of justice , and until we have , an income tax to take some of the burden of taxation from the man at the bottom , that that stone wall will stand as a deadly parallel to existing condi- tions. " - Two big state conventions were held recently. Pennsylvania Re- publicans declared as follows on the tariff : "We believe that the tariff bill recently enacted is in ac cord with the Republican policy expressed in its last national plat- , , form. We ' agree with President Taft that it is the best tariff the Republican party everpassed. . " . I Said the Ohio Democrats : We demand a revision of the present unjust and oppressive tariff , redu- cing the rates so as to lower the prices imposed on the consumer. " Consumers , it is up to you. : Think the matter over ! "In my opinion the next house will be democratic by a majority of between forty and fifty , " said Chairman James T. Lloyd , of the f National Democratic Congression " al committee , Mr. Lloyd is jn close touch with political condi- tions in practically every congres- I sional district in the country , and I \ continued to move out of town all day Saturday and Sutiday. \ Roy Randall the popular barber I has leased the pool room building and bought the stock of tobaccos' and cigars formerly owned by Uck : and Lawson and will contin- ue the business at the old stand. The democrats of Wood Lake precinct heartily endorse C. A. Ruby as candidate for County Attorney and we hope to make things lively for the other fellow as we do not believe in third term- ism. Ism.'Yhen When you come to town visit the tonsorial parlors of Roy Ran- dall and get a cool refreshing drink or enjoy a good cigar in- dulge in a game of pool or-'a chat with the proprietor , who is always ; , ready to place his time at your ; disposal. The Hoodo club gave their fin- I al dance and supper of Thursday night at the opera house and all ] report the affair the success of the season. The hall was beautifully decorated with bunting and Jap- enese lanterns by the Hanna sis ters assisted by Miss ' Maud Baily. The supper consisted of salmon salads , cake ; sandwitches and sher - bet under the direction of Mrs. W. F , Parker assisted by Miss Cloe Waggoner music was furn- ished by the Cottell sisters of Bassett. Quite a number of out of town guests were invited among which was Judge Quigley and sisters of Valentine , 3 a. m. saw the merry makers depart home after a very enjoyable time. I is generally reputed among his I colleagues as more likely to be : over cautious than over-confident i if any thing , when making polit I ical prognostications. Minority ' Leader Champ Clark predicts the Democratic majority in the next house may possibly reach seventy- I five. .
