"If that be true one thing must be admitted and that is that Mr. I Taft is in favor of the reckless waste of public money. "The total of appropriations for the fiscal year ending June 30 , 1910 was $1,044,000,000 , whereas the ap- propriations tor the fiscal year end ing June 30 , 1911 , are about $1,058 , 000.000 , an increase of $14,000,000. Such expenditures are absolutley unjustifiable. When the pres ident came into the office he declar- ed for economy with a great flour ish of trumpets. The newspapers were full of what he was going to do in that regard to relieve the tax payers of the land. But all such turned out to be thundering in the index as the foregoing totals show. " "I have" heretofore stated in the House and out of it that Senator Aldrich said a good business man can run the government just as well as it is run for $300000,000 ; per annum less than it now costs. The President himself fixed the am- oant which could be saved every year at $100,000,000. Other Re- publican big wigs , notably Senator C trter of MontanaSenator : Hale of ? Maine , chairman of the House Appropriations committee , have tlked ' economy ; but the fact re mains that their ecopomy consists entirely of gab and that they actu- ually increased the appropriations instead of .leduciug them. "As they have large majorities in both Houses of Congress and could do as they pleased , one of two things is true ; 1 : They do not des- ire to economize ; or 2 ; They are utterly incompetent. "But how can President Taft ex- pect Congress to economize when he sets the example of extravagance not only by using up the 25,000 annual allowance for traveling ex penses , but uses up several thous and dollars mOle ? Be it rememb- ered no President ever received this travel pay till the last pait of the Roosevelt regime aud Roosevelt never used all of the allowance , while his successor uses more. I How can Congress be expected to economize when the Vice-President and Speaker Fet the bad example by using automobiles paid for by the public money ? " 1' am aware that economy is an humble teeme , but it is close to the hearts of the people and millions . of them cannot afford to be taxed to support Republican officials in their reckless extravagance" It has become known in Wash ington that President Taft endeav- e'red to have Roosevelt pay him a visit at the White House , and that the latter did not accept the invita tion. This further emphasizes the story that the Taft adminstration h . is been so bad that Roosevelt will n jt dare to endorse it. It is said t itit the President's invitation , was c trried to Roosevelt orally by Capt- tain Archibald Butt , and delivered 01 the day oj Roosevelt's : : ; return Senator Lodge of Massachusetts and Son-in-law ] Longworth , accord ing to information : whicn has leak- ed out , also made strenuous endeav- ors to have Roosevelt pay his re- spects } to Taft at the White House , but T. R balked. Now comes Representative Butler- Ames of Massachusetts , Republican insurgent , with the statement that the political machine of Senator Lodge of that state "is backed by all the large corporations and all the , state and federal patronage at 0 his command" and is used to ' "ad- vance the selfish ; financial schemes of the large railroads , banking and manufacturing interests he serves in the halls of Congress. This is hardly news to well-informed men in ashington. Lodge is one of the Aldrich group , ever ready to in crease the tariff and serve the corp orate interests. He stated in the Senate one day that the ultimate consumer is a myth. Protectionists asse.it that high tar- iff rates"protect"Amflrican . working- . . . , . . , r , . . " The steel industry is one of the most highly protected industries in the United States. The high rates on steel products have "protected ' ! the American working- men in that industry by driving them from the mills. Positions formerly filled by Americans are now occupied by the cheapest for eign labor. A report jusb made on conditions in the mills of the steel trust at Bethlehem , Pa. states 4,725 men or 51 per cent of all the em I ployes ; > , worked twelve hours a day 220 workmen had a twelve hour day except on Saturdays and 4203 employes had a workday of ten and I one-half to eleven hours in length. " Thus does protection "protect" . . "Tariff . protection makes for mono poly , " declares Alfred Henry Lewis in Pearson's magzine. But that is not all he says. "Monopoly , " he " declares , "is robbery arranged for by law. Anyone who would be a monopolist would be a pickpocket could he be safe. The politicians in Washington have. cheated and betrayed you. They owed you rev- ision upward , promised you bread and gave you stone. " "How can the government con trol the trusts when the trusts con- trol the government ? " Senator Ow en of Oklahoma. - - - - - - - When the digestion is all right , the action of the bowels regular , there is a natural craving and relish for food.
