Subscription - § 1.50 Per Year. Local Notices , 5c per line per issue - Thursday , July 7 , 1910. Democratic County Con = vention. The , democratic electors of Cher- ry county , Nebr. , are hereby call- ed to meet in delegate convention in the village of Valentine , Satur- daV , July 22 , 1910 , at 2 o'clock p. m. , for the purpose of electing I seven delegates to the state con- vention to be held in Grand Is land , Nebr. , July 26 , 1910 , at 2 , o'clock p. m. , and the transaction : of any other business which may I properly come before the conven- tion. ' Our representation in said con- vention is based upon the votes cast for presidential electors in 1908 , one delegate for each 150 votes or major fraction thereof , cast at said presidential election. W ! E. HALEY , Ohm. FKAXK : FISCIIEII , .TII , Sec. Statement and Piatform < of Willis E. Reed. Since I have become a ; candi- date for the democratic nomina- tion for the United States senate , the public is entitled to know that this is the . first office to vhich I have ever aspired , notwithstand- ing i I have taken an active part on behalf of the democratic party for more than fifteen years. : Am forty-four years of age , was rear- ed to manhood upon my father's farm in Iowa and bogan business for myself by teaching school ; and which I continued to do in this state for a couple of years while reading law , until I was admitted to the bar , twenty-two years ago , commenced practicing in my pres- ent location ; and since that. time I I have given strict and careful I at- tention to my profession , business , farming and stock raising inter- ests. I JJelieving in the fundamental principles of democracy in the ! event of my election , if it shruld so happen that my personal views upon any subject to be voted up- on by me , conflicting with the wishes of the people , 1 would feel in duty bound to vote as nearly as possible as a majority of the peo- ple whom represented desired , irrespective of my personal views. should . accept the platform as a declaration of the wishes of my party. I am in favor of not only the initiative and referendum , but the recall as well. Lowering of tariff duties that it may exist for revenue only. Less legislation , better enforcement of existing la ws. more rigid economy , apply : ing business principles in ; business transactions with and for the gov ernment , recognizing that the United States is , in itself a gigan- j tic corporation in which each in- dividual and corporation has an interest and must be considered , are some of the essentials for which I stand. I oppose the pas- sage of any national laws , incon sistent with the best interests of our state. I am opposed to a ship ] subsidy as advocated by the adt t ministration party , but I favor enlarging our navigation laws in such a manner that , without ques- tion or doubt it would build up . . I Twenty-five years in western Nebraska , and a thorough ac quaintance with conditiohs sur- rounding the people of the Sixth congressional district , prompts me to urge my fitness for nomination . at your : hands. I hope you will take the pains to investigate my record , and give me an opportunity to show where I stand on live questions , unless you already know. And as a re- j suit that you will give me your I support August 16. I i The district has been . misrepre- . I . . I sented long enough. We want no gum shoe , soft-pedal congressman , . but a man typical of the west. We need representation in Washing ton. ; A man of action : , a thinker , a ' builder ; a man of red blood , who sees so much to do and so little done that he wants to tear into the work. 1f forty-horse-power- , six.-cylinder-man. Not a man of mere promises , of extravagant claims , nor just because someone thinks he can be elected. Six years ago , this district was 8600 republican. I reduced Kin- kaid's majority about 3500 four years ago. Two years : ago Judge Westover clipped another 500. Last year the district was about 500 republican. Yet we cannot win with a doubt- ful man. If there is any question as to where he stands on Cannon- ism , ' - A.ldrichism , Balling- , erism , Taftism , or any of the pertinent questions effecting na tional legislation. It is my earnest desire to learn something while this contest is on , which the people are so much in- terested. I want to be fitted for congress whether I win or not. To that end , I want the opinions of as many as will take the trouble to write me-opinions on issues and on candidates. Frankly tell me if you : have heard anything either for or against nfe , and it I will aid me to improve. Any man grows better if he is bombarded with good advice. If you : are for me , , tell me why ; and if against me tell me why also. Thanking you in advance for any favors shown , I am , Yours to command , G. L. SHUM \ \ ' AY. . I our merchant marine. I favor ad- i mitting at a greatly reduced duty , t . if not free , lumber ] , copper , iron , r salt , wool and coal until such time $ as our merchant marine becomes I fully established ; provided such 1 articles are carried from foreign : shores directly to our ports in [ American vessels. If any other aid be considered advisable to as- sist our merchant marine , I would , favor an export bounty on grain and live stock , payable directly to the farmer and stock raiser , when carried in American vessels , en- couraging thrift as well as afford- I ing extra tonnage for our merch- ant marine. On account of the appalling loss of life in this country through various forms of diseases , I be lieve it advisable and necessary that the cabinet offices of the presi- dent should be enlarged by the creation of a Secretary of Health.
