Byrd Quits Republicans. < Having decided that the repub- lican party no longer represents ray views , and believing . .an ex- planation should be offered to those of the political faith with whom I have affiliated , I offer the following : k "I regard Taft as an accessory to and vice principal to all the ne I farious , and vicious practices of BallingW ; I regard the t action of Secretary Knox in removing Minister Crane without cause or a moment's notice , as revol tion- I ary. No sooner was the announce- } : ment made of the appointment of : Mr. Crane as Minister to China . . than J. Pierpont Morgan , the man : . whose ! mailed fist is rapidly ap proaching the commercial throat of that far-off empire , took the spineless Knox in hand , and Crane , who could not be purchas- ed , was humbled. I believe the conservation system , inaugurated [ and built up by Roosevelt , was as sacred to the American people as ' the Declaration of Independence was to our fathers , or Magna Charter was to England ; but the few served by Knox , Cannon , Aldrich and Ballinger , represent ing that favored class who have taken from generations yet : un un'T born their birthright , elected ' Taft , drove ' Roosevelt to Africa , ' Pinchot , Glavis \ and common hon esty from the public service , ig nored the demand of the. Ameri- , can people that the reclamation service be left with honest men , and for a revision of tariff sched- ules downward , then in the face of an outraged constituency on the threshold of an important. . election , Mr. Taft in substance asked , , 'What are we going to .do about it ? ' "From our own district we sent as our representative to the American congress , Hon. George , Yo Norris , who grew practically from boyhood in Furnas county. We knew him well and had faith in him. In his last campaign from every stump he promised the ov erthrow of Cannon , and we cheer- ed h.'s courage and handed him his fourth commission to congress. We knew results would come , but were patient. At last the supreme moment was at hand , the demo- cratic party placed its great pow- er at the disposal of Norris and his heroic band of insurgents. Within the palm of the hand of the erstwhile boy from Furnas was lodged the privilege of driv s ing Cannon from the mighty seat 1 he had so long disgraced , and re storing td an _ outraged people some of the plunder of which they had been dispoiled. We were well pleased , in fancy we could see our hero returning with the scalp of the notorious Danville statesman at his belt , but when the smoke of the battle cleared , behold our Furnas county states- man had won one out of a total of over 6,000 of the special pri \Ti- , t leges enjoyed by the powerful speaker , and Cannon , the same old Cannon , was , by the vote of our hero , retained at the post he had damned , and i is still , by the r grace of Norris , the most power- 9 ful autocrat that ever ruled an outraged people. "The battle ef Norris may be likened to an invasion by armed hosts , upon our ' shores : the enemy 0 come , with all the grim glory of es war , our army with General Jtfor- . to ris in command , goes gloriously c . - forth , armed with supreraevpower ; the battle wages desperately for days , at last the enemy is con- quered , the white flag goes up. We are all attention. Does our general say , Disperse , ye ene mies of my country ? ' No , no , we put our ear a little closer to the ground and hear the spineless Norris say , 'General , I think you : han upon your person tooth- pick which might become dis lodged from your clothing , and in case of a charge it might accident- ally strike some of my men in the eye , effecting a painful wound. If .you will kindly lose thjs imple : ment I will turn over my com- mand to you. and edist [ as a part of your bodyguard. ' When the republican party cleans its stables and drives out the special interest , the political acrobat , and the executive con- tortionist , and returns to the principles enunciated by the im mortal Lincoln , I shall be found ' with it ; until then it is ray pur- poseto work and vote with the democratic party. party."F. \ "F. , Yo Snip. " ' ' 'hat our country needs is men. ' Men of honesty , courage and truthfulness to admit that they , have been deceived by promises . that were not fulfilled. Loyal patriots * of the -colonial style will not stay with - a party regardless of its actions when corrupted by the corporate wealth , with special interests to serve. Mr. Byrd is only one of many who are rebell . ing , a , , inst the arbitrary rule of " 'T aft - Cannon-Aldrjch and revision , lip wd insteadof 'down-ward = / He . is a true patriot. There are oth- \ ers who feel just as Mr. Byrd , does but may not < use their in- fluence to encourage their neigh bors. They are the keep still und. ! Many : are honest but may hope their party will "right about face" and again travel in theit direction , that'they won't have to switch , but the men who keep the party straight and the country C straight are the men of courage to come out plainly and publicly announce good platforms and principles and denounce the bad. He who keeps still when the party goes wrong , though he may not approve ! , is of the "me , too , " style who may vote perhaps in- dependently but lend their in- fluence [ to the leaders by keeping : still : ; and might be classed among the 49 - per cent crowd but nobody knows just where they are. - - The CRYSTAL WHITE BEPETG- EIvATOR is what you need this summer.
