VALENTINE , DEMOCRAT

Local Notices , DC per , line . per issue I

Thursday , June 23 , 1910.
A state-wide meeting of the Ne-
braska democracy has been called
for Columbus on June 27 , at 6:30
p. , m. , at which hour a banquet
will be served , A dozen demo-
cratic orators will be heard at this
banquet. The purpose of the
meeting is to organize a Nebraska
democratic club. Every demo-
crat is urged to be present.
To Democrats :
It is generally believed that the
next ' House of Representatives at
Washington will be Democratic if
there is united and harmonious
effort on the part of of Democrats
every where.
The National Democratic Con-
gressional Committee is charged
with much responsibility in i furn-
ishing a campaign book and other
literature , directing speakers , and
doing the general work of organ-
ization. \ 'Ve'need ' your ; active
support especially in a financial
way. Please send to the National
Democratic Congressional Com-
mittee , Washington , D. C. , a
check at once as we are greatly in
need of funds to push our work ,
and must depend upon Democrats
to furnish them. Our Committee
is sustained by voluntary contrib-
utions. We are reliably informed
that the Republican Committee
is already generously supplied
with money. Will you aid us at
once ? JAMES T. Lloyd , .
Chairman.

Indications are'th t congress
will pass , over the potest of Dem-
ocrats and Progressives , a railroad
regulation bill that will ] ] not prov- "
ide for a physical valuation of
railroads.
The millionaire colony of the
Senate some of. the members of
which own , stock in railroads ;
fought desperately to kil | , every
physical valuation. amendment . , ,
proposed. - * * 1 I
A physical valuation would exr i
pose co the country the extent to
which railroad" stocks have been
watered [ nd would , therefore ,
tend to prevent over-capitalization
in the future and pave the way
for reasonable freight and passen - I
ger rates. This is why . the rail-
roads fear it.
The interstate Commerce com-
mission , partisan Republican 'in
make-up ! ; , has recommended phy
sical valuation year : after year.
The commission in its last annual
report some hopelesslysays :
kl The commission has , in previous
reports , expressed the opinion
that it would be wise for Congress
to make provision for a physical
valuation of railroad properties.
and desires to reaffirm in this re
port its confidence in the. wisdom
of such a measur . "
Physical valuation was recom-
mended by Roosevelt time , and
again. This is at least one Roos
evelt policy that Mr. : Taft has de
serted cold-bloodedly. The
pre-
sident has'raised neither voice nor
' pen on behalf of physical l valu-
ation. '
Yet the Supreme court , in the
Nebraska ' rate'case , held that "the
ba'sis of all calculation as to the
reasonableness of rates must be
the fair value of the property be-
ing.used for the .convenience of 1
the public. " As fhe interstate
commerce commission does not
know the value of a single rail-
road it must fix reasonable rates
by sheer guesswork. . - , . ' , , . ' ,

The national democratic plat-
form of 1908 declared for "effici
ent supervision and. rate reguja
tion of railroads" and to that end
strongly recommended the taking
of a physical 1 valuation.
I But when it is considerd that
Harriman contributed ti260,000to
the Republican campaign fund on '
behalf of the railroads , that prob-
ably numerous other railrpa'3 ] mag-
nates advanced equally large sums ,
i and that the very bill Congress is
about to place upon the statue t

books was originally drawn in New
York and submitted to the railroad
int ( rests before being introduced
in Congress , it is not so strange
that physical valuation amend-
ments received their death stabs
I
even after passed by a goodly I
majority the House of Repre
sentatives.
Oh , American people , you must
I be more vigilant than you are if
you would continue deserve the
