SOMEONE BLUNDERED
When the citizens of Valentine i
I
were called upon to vote for the
proposition to give 40 acres of
land to the state for experimental I
and building purposes there was
heard no opposition and it was
generally conceded , and the almost
un mimous vote , for , shows our '
'I
pe ) ple to be loyal 1 , liberal and
patriotic.
They depended town
upon our I
& . .
board to state the I proposition : ,
legally , covering tha land to be
ceded , and did not question that
they t had carefully looked after
what they were attempting to do.
It now appears that we have
voted to cede 40 acres six miles
south , in another township , and
three miles south af the Niobrara
river-the neisei of section 31 ,
to-vnship 33 , range 27.
Relying upon the notice of elec-
tion and ballots 'as published and
printed by The Republican , ( whose I
elitor : , W. S. Barker , is chairman .
of our town board ) , as being cor- I
rect , our cititzens voted for the
proposition.
Perhaps not another half-dozen
business men in Valentine would
have made.the blunder township
33 instead of 34. .
If our town board has been as
negligent I with other work con-
nected with the building of our
big water dam , which is said by
people acquainted with such work
to be a blunder , then we will have
spent a big part of our $ [ 2,000-
all our city could bond for-and
got little in return.
It's more money than they ever
spent before , and , we fear , they
were lavish in spending , and then
failed to get what we most needed
aid voted for - a twin cement
reservoir on the hill north of town. 1

E. V. E. A. June 4.
George Miles , secretary of the
E. V. E. V. , has issued a call for
the editors to meet in his town on
Saturday June 4 , which is one
week from next Saturday , and
wants all the boys to be there.
We're coming , George , and
we'd like to stay ; a week if some-
body'd take care or . our office
work.
The editors will have a jolly
time , talking shop , and this is to
be a real editors' meeting that will
be worth the while.
Everybody is to bring his fav-
orite hobby horse and ride it or
get someone else to , so bring your
spurs and chaps , boys , and be *
prepared to enter into the dis
cussions.
We want 1 to see the boys from
all along the line. Let the watch-
.
word beV e' 11 'meet you all at
O'Neill the first Saturday in
June. "

SCHOOL NOTES * " I
The third grade is progressing
nicely with their picture books.
,
Rush Clarke is not able to finish ,
the term on account of his eyes. I
.
Patsy Reagan has left ] school be I
cause of the family leaving town.
The eighth grade is working hard
1
in arithmetic and is doing some
good work. „ 4 , ' . '
I
The primary pupils v
are verr ,
much ( Y interested in the story of
Robinson Crusoe.
Levi Layport , Ardis Sherman ,
May Joseph and Gaskill Veach are ,
out of the primary room on ac
count of sickness.
The high school and teachers are
planning to have their annual pic-
nic at Parry 1 alls this Saturday.
They expect to leave ] at 8 a. m. , re
turning about 8 p. m.
The senior class is preparing to
leave a class 'memorial on the I
school grounds. This is a laudable
ambition and will serve to recall .
the memories of this school year as
other' days come and go.
The commencement exercises : will
'be held in Church's opera house
Friday evening , June 3 , to which
everybody isN invited. The gradu

well.
.
The pupils in Miss DriseolPs
room are at present spending part
of their time in the laudable occu-
pation o { jllecting : products for the
geography class. Cotton , wool
silk , grains , etc. , are collected and
each pupil writes about the product
he collects. This , being original
work , would be and is interesting to
pupils.
State Supt. Bishop has asked
I
Prof. Bettenga and Miss Driscoll to
take part in the program at Lincoln
during the" state institute week ,
May 30 to June 3. It is not cer-
'tain , on . account of our commence-
ment J week whether they can gel
* * " '
' away. i Supt. Bishop has honored
the Valentine schools in giving a
prominent place in this state pro-
gram to two of our teachers. The
state pays their way if they go. '
The high school pupils and the
teachers throughout the building
were on the tiptoe of joyful antici-
pation whe each icceived a most
artistically hand-painted invitation
bidding them come to Quigley's hall
on Friday eve to a reception given
by the juniors in honor of the sen-
iors. Upon entering the hall a
fairyland presented itself. Cushion
ed settees in the corners , surround-
ed by plants , together with the rugs
on the floor , gave the hall a very
cozy appearance ! The tables were
separated from the rest of the hall
by screens made of cedar branches
and vines. The forepart of the
evening was spent in playing
games , after which a two-course
luncheon was served. Music was
furnished by the junior girls during
the luncheon. Iris , the junior class
flower , were tastefully strewn about
the tables. After luncheon each
one was given a small bag of beans
with which to buy packages at the
dead letter auction sale. Professor
Bettenga , acted as auctioneer. So
great was the enjoyment gained
gfrom
from this that it was impossible to
leave until after all was sold , even
though it was much later than tne
regular hours of retirement. All
those present wish to thank the
juniors for the delightful evening
in which it was their pleasure to
participate.
