bonds for a waterworks system ,
which appears to have been begun
and the proposition is being ad-
vertised. At present they have
no means of fighting fires except-
ing with chemicals and a bucket
brigade. They are discussing the
propriety of a reservoir on the
hill , built of cement , and we think
they will wisely choose this plan
if some representative of a steel
corporation doesn't make them be-
lieve that it can be built cheaper
of steel , but in that case the tank
would probably be located on the
hill for the benefit of the wat < ? r
pressure or force for fighting fire.
There is some division of senti-
ment in this as in other cities re
garding plans , but in the main
they are for the bonds and for fire
protection. '
,
Wood Lake has a school build-
ing of commodious proportions
and located on the elevation east
of the depot or center of town and
it is necessary to have the reser-
voir considerably above this to se-
cure proper water force.
There are several general stores
in this village , a good hotel , two
livery ; stables , a blacksmith shop ,
mpat market two hardware lum-
ber and furniture stores two pool
halls two banks a coal dealer ,
two M. D's and and an opera
house. . - .

Tin Wood Lake bank has em-
ployed an assistant to help Mr.

Everybody is boosting for the
waterworks since the late fires.

John Woods of Long Pine came
up this week to put some improve-
ments on his claim.
Miss Cloe Waggoner has opened
a millinery store in the south half
of the postoffice building.
The Wilke Concert Co. gave an
entertainment here Wednesday to
a large crowd. A good show.
G. W. Klingaman has been on
the sick list the past week and is
being treated by Dr. J. M. Tische.
C. E. Smith , who owns a small
threshing machine , has been quite
busy threshing for his neighbors.
The interior of the Wood Lake
hotel parlor has been re-decorated
I and grained. C. F. Miller did the
work. .
The interior of the Wood Lake
bank has been materially changed
to accommodate the ever increas-
ing business.
Samuel Lippy and wife brought
their little child in for medical
treatment. The little one is get-
ting along , nicely
The fish lake here has been
flooded with water by Cy Hagen
the past week. Some fine speci-
mens of bass may be seen at most
any time.
Sheriff Rosseter was in town
recently serving subpoenas on
witnesses and jurymen in con
nection with the Smith vs ' Han
cock case.
The east bound passenger killed
nine head of steers for J. P. Krey-
cik Saturday morning near Arabia.
Value about § 500. Some hard
luck for Joe. .
Satur'day evening a company of
young people gathered at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Shannon , a
short distance east of town. Ev-
eryone reports a fine time.
Frederick Uehling , a Bloomfield
merchant , visited here with a view
to purchasing land and made a
tour of the surrounding country
with J. N. Uehling of Goose
Creek precinct.

Lou McDill has decided to' stay
in the bank ' since he has been giv-
en an assistant . We should hate
to lose Mr. McDill , as a man of
his sterling qualities is not to be
picked up every day.
Monday , Tuesday and Wednes
day evenings the Duncan ? Devere
Vaudeville Co. entertained the
public with songs , 'dancing , comic

little city Tuesday.
Miss Lottie Grady went to
Arabia Friday evening , returning
Saturday on the local.
Friday evening the young peo-
ple's club held its regular meet-
ing. All present report an en-
joyable time.
Although Sunday was a chilly
day , many people enjoyed the
fresh air and sunshine by walking ,
driving or riding. -
It is reported the Dr. McCul-
lough intends to replace the drug
store which was burned some time
ago , with a cement building.
Friday evening a number of
neighbors and friends gathered at
the home of Frank Rickett , where
a very enjoyable evening was
spent.
Frank Krampert sr. , is helping
in the hardware store of , Uck & .
Lausen during the absence of \ Ir.
Uck who is spending some days

in Omaha.
Pat Dew expresses himself as
"limping all over" since Sunday ,
his birthday. His numerous'
faiends showed their good fellow-

In the examinations last week
some excellent grades were made.
Clarence Johnston was . out of
school Monday and Tuesday on
account of sickness.

Senator Aldrich of David City ,
will lecture ! here. His subject has
not yet been announced , but we ,
may count upon something good.
