There was a dance Feb. 22nd , at Charley Meyers' . Mr. : Simons' baby has been quite sick but is better. Will Geyer carried the mail several days last week. SCHOOL NOTES The attendance is still light in the fourth and fifth grades. The fifth grade enjoy the little histories for supple- mentary readers. The high school girls are practicing basketball during this beautiful spring weath- er. The high school enjoyed a German . . story Wednesday . morning in opening exer cises by Prof. Bettenga. Rush Clark , Barton Daily and Elsi Kletecka have been out of school a part of the week because of bad colds. J , I Great enthusiasm is being manifested over the pen- manship lessons , and the writing is greatly improved. Ten minutes has been ad- ded to each half-day session giving more time to do bet- ter and , more thorough work. Several children in the primary room have seen the robin and meadow-lark , which proves spring is on the way. The children report hav ing seen a number of birds , this spring-robins , blue- jays , } redbirds , flickers and waxwiugs. We are sorry to report Eugene Taylor was un fortunate in spraining his ankle , compelling him to be out of school temp o r ar rlY. Alliance has requested a debate with Valentine in the near future , but owing to prevailing circumstances the debate will not be held. . The German class begins the study of Immeiisee next Monday. A portion of the recitation period is given once a week to conversation and writing in German. . The ninth grade _ girls met with Vera Wilson ' Friday evening at ' the home . ' , of . . Mrs. Hornby , where they " hor- , oughly enjoyed preparing I and eating a little luncheon. . The agriculture class .will : soon put their agricultural knowledge into practical use. A hot b'td is being made and % later each mem ber will be allotted a small . - - . . - - - - _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ " " " ' _ -r" " , " " plot of ground which ' he must plant and care for. The class in Mediaeval \ history is deep in the study of the Renaissance. A great deal of outside reading on the- period is done and re- j ports and special phases of the movement are given. I The junior j class in Eng- lish has begun the suidy of MacBeth. : Dr. Sherman's questions on the tragedy will be used. The class is greatly interested in the play and excellent work is being done. A basketball team is be- ing organized . in the gram room. The I members mar room.- 1 1e lueID ers are Ruth Lamoreaux , Mina Keister , Martha : Haley , Ad- die Harvey , Ethel Gallo- way , Jennie Graham , with Jletus Haley for referee. ' The class in physics took an examination last Friday , which was considered not very light. The subject of heat is now being studied and since it has been dis- , cussed in class warmer J weather has been the result. Those in the first gram- mar room receiving perfect attendance certificates for last month were Kathleen Yeast , Dwyer Hoxey , Mil ton Nicholson , Oherrie Len- eagh , Russell Yeast , Don- ald McLean , Leone Ander- son and Raymond -Reagle. The debate between 0- . Neill and Valentine has been postponed from March 5 , to a later date when the fever shall have abated. Our debaters have the affirma tive. Those who expect to to defeat O'Neill are Hazel Graham , Marie Christensen and Raymond Jones ; Mary Jacobs , alternate. The first debate will be held here and I the second at Atkinson , probably April 19. Those who are to deny the propo- sition there are Helen I I rfparks , Edward Cohota and Lawrence Rice ; Kate , Hel- zer , alternate. The ' debate between O'Neill and Atkin- son was held last Friday. evening at O'Neill , O'Neill winning by 82 points. The spring class will be- gin this year's work. AD ] pupils wishing to enter this class must enroll not later than March 21. Unless your child can come regularly when started , it is of little use to start him until he can. The habit of punctuality is formed the first few months . the child goes to school and I if allowed to come a few days now and then it not only makes him discontent- ed but breaks up the regular working order of his class. When you decide you are ready to have your child , .school also decide that ; he is to be there every day unless sickness prevents.
