Dr. Perrigo , registered Opto ' !

again at Donoher hotel Saturday ,
March 5. 6 ! 2
Mr. Youngerman , a traveling
salesman the Manhattan Oil Co
of Omaha " js something of a check-
er player. . He was in town Monday.
J. B. Tupper and 0. B. Murphy
of Osborne , Neb. , were in town last
week looking for land. Mr. Tupper
played checkers some and some of ;
the boys had , a little sport and free
smokes at Geo. Cutler's expense
while the game lasted. I
Louis Taylor and son returned
Sunday from St. Paul , Nebr. ,
bringing home with- them a fine
2-year-old imported black Perch-
\
eron stallion which they purchased
from Frank Imes for $1500. The
horse weighs 1700-pounds.
The A. 0. U. W. and D. of H.
lodges held memorial services Sun-
day in the M. E. church in memory
of the departed who recently died
of scarlet fever. The lodges march-
ed from the hall to the church and
Rev. Baker preached a memorial
sermon.
Dr. 0. W. Noyes , returned from
a trip in the country-recently ' : and
stopped at Milt Latta's where he
saw Milt's funny little engine that
runs by steam and which Milt t
thinks will out do and out pull the
ordinary steam engine. Dr. Noyes
tried ; to describe it to us , but as that
is not our hobby we'd make the ex-
planation so awkward that our . .
readers would think the whole thing
was on wheels and rolled along , .
gathering its inspiration from hot
air pumped out of the sunlight that
you see in the distant waves of
heat dancing on the horizon. But .
the engine runs , is almost noiseless '
and we expect to hear further from
the man of wheels who is constant-
ly putting rollers under heavy
loads.
C , E. Meyers and Dave Hamer
were in town last Saturday and the
former handed us a dollar for THE
DEMOCRAT and wanted to know about
the Cornell electric railroQ.d.Ve
can say that Mr. X2ornell is still in
the East in the interest of this road
and we think he will be able to
capitalize the project and start
work on the road in the spring. We
know that Mr. Cornell feels very
enthusiastic over the prospects and
that he has spent Feveral thousand
dollars on the survey , which doesn't
look as though it was an idle dream.
It looks to us as plain as any busi-
less proposition. The hauling is
ihere and there will be a thousand
times more if the road is built and
it will make money. No doubt
about that. The country will stand
: a considerable development. The
soil is rich and will be utilized for
: , crop purposes when there is some
means of disposing of the crops. It
vrill fllso facilitate the building up
of a dairy business Alfalfa will be
the hay crop. The cinzeus who
live near this t proposed line of rpad

values will creep upward ' until a
good farm of 160 . acres will make a ,
r fortune 'for its owner. 'Anolher
dollar , plea e , and we'll tell you
that all this is true and goin' to
happen and we meant it all , the
time.

William Erickson
Home From Canada
Wm. Erickson returned Sunday
from his Canada trip. He's well
pleased with what he saw and fav '
orably impressed with the country.
He will probably hook a few teams
together and go back in the spring.
Thinks he can raise wheat up there
and make more money than raising
Whiteface steers. Can put iv . 300
acres' ot wheat with two men and
six teams that will make at least 201 I
bushels - _ per . acre and possibly 40.
-
This will net $5,000 a year after
paying expenses of threshing and
hauling. This is a minimum esti-
mate and should be enlarged to suit
the imagination of the farmer who
tills the soil. A good farmer will
raise 40 bushels of wheat per acre ,
and the average yield is 31 bushels
and over the past year.
We are not trying to boom Cana
da , but telling & the story in a mild
way as we head it from Mr. Erick-
son , Sunday , upon his return.
Says jt'g warmer in Calgary than it
is here and coal is plentiful. All
you can haul with two horses for
$1.00 a load , or in many places you .
may find coal on your own farm.
Homesteads up there and pre-
emptions to each farmer who are
required to live three' years on the
land to obtain title.
The land is going fast. There is
a great rush. We are tempted to
try ; farming in our old age under
such inducements , but we're afraid
they don't guarantee the weather so
far north to be good. We'd also
want a farm like we once had an
application for from a Swede man
down east , who had read in a Swed
ish paper that we were doing a real
estate business in Cherry county.
We received a letter from him ,
wanting to know if there was plenty
of homestead land in Cherry coun-
ty ? If there was he wanted the
the numbers of all the good land
and would like a farm with plenty
of good farm land , with Itimber on
it , and running water.V ould like
springs on the land , and situated
near a school and not far from
town. ; And couldu'r [ find two or
three quarters of such land togeth
er so that his son and son-in-law
could be close to him. In addition
to this I must guarantee the soil ! to ]
, be. good. I forgot to answer his :
