Us Up. - - Last Friday near the close of i . district court Judge Westover called the editor to the stand to explain the editorial entitled . 'District Court" on Dec. 16. We print below a copy of his letter , in response : to which we wrote up an explanation and sub- mitted it to the court and -which he : required us to read in coqrfc. l Judge Westover didn't appear very willing to receive our ex- . planation as to our not referring tp him nor intending to criticise him and after considerable - ques- ! tioning in addition .to our offered article of about 20 pages , asked if we would be willing to publish a statement this week , saying that we didn't mean him."T e'\.e told it'elsewhere in this paper. We offered to print the whole twenty pages if he wished it but he didn't. ; 3. Di Scott was there to take down in short hand and took the whole proceeding . and the / full ex ' " planation. Here's Judge West- over's letter : , Mr. 1. / ill. Rice , . Editor Valentine Democrat ? , Valentine , Nebraska. ' ' Dear Sir : . Have just received your ; paper . If. con - ditions in any department of that court are as you would h.av'e peo- ple believe from this , editorial * , . l ; I : I ' * i- ' must know , the.facts. And if , any- , thing needs correction , I . atp , charged with the duty of seeing ' that it is corrected. Now , I -wip 1 l. I expect that you be prepared to furnish ; me the information upon which you ha\e based this editor- ial , and that you will furnish it to me publically in the , district ' room in the presence of everyone con- cerned or interested.
