Col. Geo. Tracewell who had
one of m's ankles broken sometime
ago by a horse -tramping on it *
went down to Omaha to the Meth
odist frospital to have that member
operated on last Friday evening.

came down from Crawford to
spend Thanksgiving with relatives ]
and friends in Valentine , returned
to Crawford Sunday night , where
George is engaged in the butcher
business. with EL ' B. Foerster , who
was formerly employed in the
Citizens jneat market in this city.
John Eaton opened the Chicago
House for business yesterday and
intends to run a strictly first class
hotel , catering to transient as well
as local trade. Mr. Eaton is not
new to the hotel business , having
been engaged in that business at
I Wood Lake and later had charge
of the Donoher hotel in this city.
Mr. Eaton is a genial , good-hearted .

Crookston.
We went up to Crookston Tues-
day evening on the 7:30 : and back
on the 11 o'clock passenger. Not
so convenient as tlie other train
which would give us time to trans-
act some1 business b.v daylight , but
it's better than staying over a day
and1 ' flagging the , early morning
train going east as we have don
in the past and sometimes failed
to stop the train , and once caught
an extra several 1 hours later that I
ran through . without stopping ' and
we "caught on" and rode into
Valentine on . a box car by tipping . I ,
quarter a-piece . to two brakies.
a Yes , the train service is better
now and Crookston is more prom i-
nent than ten or twelve years ago ,
when the trains stopped incident-
ally for water and occasionally to
meet another train. They have
an agent and operator now and a
number of business houses that I
they didn't then have and they all
seem to be .doing a little business.
The people have hopes of great-
er growth and improvement in the
near future and there seems to be
some demand for the' choice lo
cations. It is.a . healthy looking
town , on a nice southern slope and
surrounded by a good farming and
stock raising community. We
guess they'll thrive.
Max E. Viertel has just received
three mounted birds from the
taxidermist that looked like the
stork. He calles them the "weep-
ing cranes. " They stand about
four feet high and are almost
white having a few brown feathers
about the head. Mr. Viertel and
his son Rudolph went hunting
some time ago up on White lake ,
S. D. and killed them , Rudolph
bringing : down two of them as they
circled ] over him. They fell in the
water and were in good condition
for mounting. They are beautiful
birds and are . nicely mounted.
I'd Rather Be
. A country editor and chase a-
round for news , before I'd be a
millionaire with wealth.I could
not use. I'd rather be a printer
with patches on my breeches ,
than be a master of finance , with
all my thoughts on riches. I'd .
rather eat my modest meal , digest

lic with our kids , around our ,
cheerful hearth with their mother
for an audience , to help enjoy
their mirth , is better than to move
about in high society , whore dress
and jewels make - life a mockery.
lTis true the printer's cash gets
-short and duns come in a hurry ,
but the happy fellow does not fret
-he lets the dunner worry. He
always has a conscience : clear a
disposition sunny ; he knows that ,
life has always joy besides the
chase for money. For the mould-
er of opinion is a. happier man by
far , than the man who owns a pal-
ace a yacht and private car. And
'when he goes to his reward he
knows that all is well while the
, man who makes wealth his god
will some day wake in h - 1. -
