Shot Dead " by-
Edward Bell.
A snot rang out sharp and- sud
den on the atmosphere Tuesday
evening about five o'clock . .on
Catherine street just east of
Main : street. People who heard
the shot were startled and hurried
in the direction of the sound. In-
doors the muffled sound seemed a
warning of a fire breaking out ,
but the crowd hastily assembling
a few rods east of Main street in gn
dicated that some one had been
shot.

- This is not such a frequent oc-
urrence in Valentine as to be void
o'f : interest here and is usually
the inspiration of an easterner
who is too bad for his ovrn
ountry and comes west for more
I room , freer opportunity un-
known victims. They're gener-
ally of the bold bad men who want
to do something' big upon some
pretext of fair play or justifica- .

nor do the citizens of our = town or
oramunity of these bad men com-
ng to our town or county to carry

later when someone is imposed upon

The story , as we learn it from
several parties in this case ,
dates back to Saturday night when
Ed Bell and Charley McArthur :
or Paddy as he was called around
the , , , , rajJroad . . . carap , engaged in.a
fistcuff " ' between
the railroad camp
and town /over some money deal.
'
Bell claimed that Paddy owed him
some money and they quarreled
and fought over it , one getting a
black eye and the other his face
scratche'd and fingers chewed up.
Ed Bell is master mechanic at
the railroad 'bridge construction
work , and Charles McArthur has
been night watchman for the past
three months about , and before
that was teamster for Rosser & ;
Whittacre , hauling supplies from
town , and previous to that worked
for awhile on one of Frank R'\ 1d-
all's dray wagons , coming here
early last spring. Edward Bell ,
also came here last spring and
during the first part of the sum-
mer worked out on John Bache-
lor's ranch for three or four
months and while there sent back
some where. for his wife who
came and helped with the cooking
. . . .
at Mr. Bachelor's ranch until Bell
got a job on the railroad construe-
tion work when he moved to town
and has been living in rooms in r
the. Stinard building.
The feud between McArthur
and Bell was renewed when the
former came to town Tuesday
afternoon and purchased an auto-
matic revolver at Frank Fisher's
hardware store and got Frank to
show him how it worked. A few
minutes before the time of the
shooting McArtliur and Bell met
in the Eureka saloon and a quarfe )
ensued over § 20 which McArthur
accused Bell of taking from him is i :
Saturday night while he was n
drunk. B. Atwood , one of the I :
bartenders , told McArthur to cut
that ouf and * not start anything in 1 ,
there/
f
Bell and several friends who I t :
were with him stepped outside and :
they were followed by McArthur
who called upon Bell to go back h
Into the alley with him to talk this jo
thing over , but Bell refused to go ,
stating he would talk it over when f y
McArthur calmed clown and told 1
him Jie would send his hat out to t )
camp next day.
Lee Shepard had started over to a :
the livery barn but Paddy called 1 D : :
him back , sa.ying"I : want you to w
be here , " and came out from the Ii
alley , where he had momentarily tt
stepped , with a gun in his hand hi
and in response to Lee's question ,
II
" "what do you want , Paddy ? " he h
replied : "I want that : s - of a

Beared to be desperately pulling
at the trigger of his automatic
which didn't seem to work.
Roberts another railroader dump-
ed in between Me Arthur and Bell
and tried to push Bell in at the
side door of the Eureka saloon
which thp.v came to while retreat-
ing vfrom McArthur but didn't
have time to get through , or the
door being locked or resisting ! :
their attempts to open it , Bull
turned facing McArthur who was
by this tip5e within : , four or five
feet of him and reaching around
Roberts ' to get aim at Bell. ' Bell
ap'peared to be fumbling the door
knob trying to open the -door but
whipped ou . t.his gun.atthisjnstant !
and fired ' '
over Roberts shoulder
right in the face of McArthur and
so close that the powder burns
showed in McArthur's [ face.
McArthur : : dropped over back-
ward like a beef and never kicked
though his breathing continued
for : several minutes afterward. :
He < was shot just above the moutb I
at the right side of the nose with a
3S-cal. Colts. McArthur's revolver
fell to the sidewalk beside him and
was picked up by Sheriff Rosseter
who was immediately upon the
scene . ( and took charge of Ed Bell
taking him to jail to await trial.
Upon examining McArthur's
automatic revolver ; ] the magazine I
was full but it was found to have
no [ load in the barrel , consequently
McArthur , with little experience e
handling an automatic , had failed
to : load the barrel after filling the
magazine and it wouldn't pull off
without starting it.
,
The coroners jury consisted of
the following citizens of oar town :
G. A. Chapman , \V. E. Haley I
T. C. } Hornby , H.V. . Hoenig ,
W. T. Kincaid , Geo. Elliott. I
CQroner Dr.
Alfred Lewis preW
sided and Co. Atty. Tucker con
ducted the examination. They
inquired carefully into the case
and found that
the deceased came
to his death by a pistol shot wound
by the aforesaid Edward Bell and
were discharged.
