JEFF AND JACK SIGN
AGREEMENT TO FIGHT
New York , Oct. 29.-Jack
Johnson and James J. Jeffries
( the negro insisted that as present
champion , his name should go
first ) signed articles in New York
late this afternoen binding them
to fight forty-five or more rounds
to a finish , not later than July 5 ,
1910 , before the club offering the
best financial inducement , the win-
ner to take a aide bet of 10,000
and ' 75 per cent of the purse , the
looser to take 25 per cent.
Articles of Agreement.
The articles follow :
An agreement entered into this
day between Jack Johnson and
James J. Jeffries provides for
the following.
First-They agree "to ibox for i
the heavy-weight championship of
the world.
Second-They agree to box be-
fore the club , organization or per-
son offering the best financial in-
ducements. .
Third-Bids for the contest
must : be submitted on December
1 , 1909 , at 2 p. m. , .at the Hotel
Albany , New York City.
Fourth-Each club , organiza
tion or person making a 'bid for
the contest must have a represen
tative on the ground who will post r :
5,000 in coin or certified check to I
make good any and all stipulations :
of the bid. :
Fifth - The referee is to be se I
lected when . the club bid is accept-
ed.
ed.Sixth - It is hereby agreed that
the contest shall be of forty- ve
rounds or more.
Seventh-The purse shall be
divided 75 per cent to the winner
and 35 per cent to the looser. I
Eighth : - Each of the contes-
tants herewith posts with Robert I
P. Murphy of New York , as tem
porary stakeholder , the sum of I
10000. . Of this sum each posts .
5,000 as a wager or side bet on
the result of the contest and 5,000 .
as a forfeit- to guarantee com
pliance with these articles.
Ninth - The contest shall take
place not later than July 5 , 1910. I !
Tenth-It is hereby understood
and agreed that the contest shall
be fought uijder straight Marquis
of Queensberry rules and with ! '
five-ounce gloves. ,
