cavalry horse in the service is
about ten years it requires about
1,300 horses a year to keep up the t
supply. ! It takes about two years '
to prepare the horses for service

An interesting letter from Prof.
Mohlman was received a few days
ago. He is now at Nelson and
praised that school very highl y.
Of the equipment and manage-
ment he spoke in. the. highest
terms. He also told of an amus {
amus-
ing little talkHe ] had with a lady .
at Nelson. While looking over -
her fine lawn he saw almost in the
center of the lawn a sickly looking
soap weed. Wondering why she "
cared for this ia such a tender
way he asked her about it. '
"Why , that is a 'weeping bride' "
she said. "We prize them very
highly here. " And his sympathy
at once went out to Cherry county
where "weeping brides" are so - .
plentiful.

T. J. Brown of Arabia was , in

J
formed us of the death of John . . t
Thomas who lives on what is ' /
known as Goose creek , I
It seems that a small boy in
some manner - set fire to the prairie , - -
Thursday morning about nine
ocloek ? and a strong wind from
the south carried it rapidly north
sweeping everything before it. As
it neared the home of Mr. Thom-
as , although he was sick in bed ,
he got up , hitched up a team and
started to plow around some hay
r
stacks near the house. In some
way he got surrounded by the
flames and in trying to save his
team he was badly burned which
resulted in his death Friday morn-
ing about 4 : o'clock. Mr. Thom-
as was an old settler of Cherry
county and was about 66 years
old. He leaves a wife and four j
children to mourn his death. The , H
remains were laid to rest in the i ; '
Wood Lake Cemetery Saturday h
afternoon. . '
