The Basket Ball girls and Base l ball boys went to Johnstown Friday to take part in the celebra tion. The basket ball score was 17 to 10 and the baseball S to 4 , Johnstown winning ! both games. Although Valentine was beaten in both games they had an enjoyable time and were pleasantly enter- I . I tained by the Johnstown people. A glee club has been partially organized for the Valentine High School , which will be very instru- tive and beneficial to the members. Three more Basket Ball teams were chosen in the High School , electing Alice McLane general manager , Hazel Carlson , Branch Hutchinson and Bertha Helzer captains. This makes a total of four teams .now and we expect in the future to have some fine games. Lots of new type at THE DEMO" CRAT office. tf Government Homesteads. Some sea- sons are earlier and the climatic conditions so favorable that a crop = planted early or late does well and any body can raise a good crop if he only plants and cultivates dur- ing the season but the the close observer and student of weather conditions may raise a crop any season : in this part of the country if he plants at the proper ; time. I barring accidental storms of hail and tvind. We deem as especially im port- , ant the forecasts : of early or late' frosts I ' in which our farmers are I given opportunity to protect ten , der plants , also the cold wave fore- i casts which enable stockmen 'to | get feed together and gather in I their stock from the prairies to i I prevent great and hazardous loss- es as in the early days when vast : I I herds of cattle , were swept from ! the Nebraska prairies and well to do ranchmen were left without stock necessary to secure . their . commercial paper. Those early days were hazard : ous alike to stockmen and banks I which loaned money on stock. j ' The thrift and heart of the stock 1 'II business on the western prairies owe ranch to the local Weather I' Bureau and its i timely warnings ' whioh enable manjV ranchmen I through the : telephone system to , spread the news from Valentine of j the approach : of a storm which " ' " , , ' " - ' . : , - . , . . - - - - - " " - - - , ' . . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - . means instant activity at all well regulated ranches to gather in the stock. But no less valuable is the data published from week to week in the Valentine Democrat giving i the correct conditions of the weather from which valuable de ductions ave made by intuitive farmers and stockmen who in na tures field are made better weather prophets than Hicks or Devoe.
