I Several : changes have occurred round about Merriman : in the last few weeks as follows : Mr. Basels bargain store has been sold to Milton Cumins of I Pine Ridge agency , who is pre paring to move it on Lake creel : where he desires to become a gal lant Indian trader. The next important matter , is the changing hands of the Anchor bank , Metzger Bros. , the main guys of the churn ranch and Mr. : Blanchard , the present ; cashier , having bought it of E. M. Fuller. The new firm is now in charge and doing business : : ; t. the old I stand.Ye predict t : 'success for I the . . new " . firm as they are all good . Ami now . comes the news from Pine Ridgethat Major McGlon thlin , special Indian inspector , is there on the ground with the Gam ble bill to open up what was Lug- enbeel county but changed by the ( last legislature to Bennett county. r This county is about 50 miles long and 25 miles wide and lays along the Nebraska line in South Da- I kota. ! It embraces the best lands on the reservation and so far as i known all residents of the county are in favor of opening it up. They appear to want to join the union , so mote it be. But the great council will come off at Al- len , S. D. , Sept. 15 , and then the writer will try to send in full de tails. tails. The The writer perhaps will have something to say in the future in regard to the conduct of some of the government officials and we reserve the right to call every thing by its proper name. We shall call a hoe a hoe and a spade spade but at all times ve shall try to be generous and in some cases we shall not try to tell all the facts that could be told for our pen could not describe it , though proofs could be had in abundance. Yours for the war , TRA VELER. , Merriman , Neb. , Sept. 17 ' 09. EDITOR DEMOCRAT : I have just received the report from the big council on the reser- vation for the opening to settle ment of about one-third of the Pine Ridge reservation. This re port says that on the morning of the 15th the Indians of the Pine Ridge reservation was found in one of their large council houses on Bear creek , near , Allen , S. D. , and it seemed that the opening of a part of this reservation was go- ing to be fought to the bitter end by what is known as the big. Dglala consul , headed by Charlie lurning Hawk of Kyle , S. 1) . , and supported by a wireless tele- graph from most of the employees of the agency. One of these em- ployees went KO far in the matter as to swipe a petition for the open-I ing and turned or had it turned . I . . . . . ' . , . ' . . , . 04- . ' , . . > . over to the opposition. The pe tition was run down and Mr i Turning Hawk had to produce , I but this official is so used to swip- I ing things it was taken as a force ' of habit. The agent at Pine Ridg 'I and some guests attended the I council and heard all the opposi- tion arguments , and the good peo- ple for the opening commenced. You just bet your ; boots they got out quick for they knew what was coming things didn't go through right. The winning was so easy. All went off with a smile. This third of the reservation to be op ened is the best land and we are still fighting for a railroad. The writer perhaps will hear more news from these parts and will re- ! I , port at once , as everybody is in - I terested in the opening up of all graft corners and of moving the light from under the bushel. We say amen to all that's been done I and will look forward to better ! conditions for our neighbors on I the north for in our'opinion ; they are deserving. TltAVJ : LEn . Settlement Right. Persons who expect to file on homesteads in Tripp county next month after the drawing that is I now going on is over , will be in- terested in knowing that the land office has decided that settlers ! may ; squat on the unentered lands after midnight on Sept. 30 , getting in I that way the first right to it. Squatters must make some act of I settlement such as the starting of a house or the turning of some sod. Two competent witnesses to these facts must be prepared to swear to them if necessary. Dallas and Gregory are crowded , with men who are waiting the time to come when they may squat and secure a home and it is ex- I pected that every quarter of de sirable unentered land will be I taken on that date. - Burton ' In- dependent.
