I Roy Kuskie killod a panther last
Saturday at his place ] 15 miles east
of Valentine on the Niobrara river.
It came boldly into his yard about
1 o'clock p. m. , and caught aj tI I
chicken ! Roy got his rifle and I i I
gave chase , shooting repeatedly
and wounding it in two places I
breaking a front leg of the panther
which still defied the dogs and
climbed a tree. Upon on arriving . I
under the tree where the dogs I
stood guard , Roy beheld the panth-
er ready to spring upon him and
shot it through the heart , and 'I I
jumped back as the panther sprang I
upon him , sustaining - a scratch on I
the hand in warding ofl''lith I
a swipe of its paw the panther
sent a dog to the ground and then I I
fell back dead. The panther or
catamount or bob-cat as some I
people call them was larger than
a coyote and Roy brought it to
town to have it mounted. .
