F. A. CUMBOW. , 9 II I I Having filed my application T : hereby announce myself republi- can candidate for the office of ( county superintendent of public i .I' . instruction of Cherry county , Ne- ; n braska to be voted on at the pri- . mary election to be held August 17 , 1909. + . . . . 1909.CORA THACKREY , So. B. i Thereby announce myself as a . candidate for the republican nomi- nation for the office of county superintendent of public instruc- tion of Cherry county , Nebr. , at the primary election to be held August 17 , 1909. I will advance the' educational interest of the county to the best of my ability if nominated and elected. H. W. FUNKE , So. B. , Principal of Cody Schools. Having duly qualified , I desire to announce myself ] a candidate for nomination to the office of sup- erintendent of public instruction of Cherry county , Nebraska , on the republican ticket , at the pri- mary election , August 17 , 1909. . I am a graduate of the Fremont Normal College. I took the de- l gree of Bachelor ; of Science and have a professional certificate. For the past three years my wife and I have held and improved a j homestead in this county. I was two years principal of the Cody school and one year principal of the Crookston school. I changed last year because Crookston is nearer to our homestead. I have been engaged in school work for ten years. If elected will fulfill the duties of the office to the best of my ability. Eespectfully , ' D. F. STORY. . Next Tuesday is primary elec- tion. The democrats of Cherry county have no controversy this year in the selection of candidates and only a vote will nominate the ticket. E. B. Quible is our can- didate for county treasurer. It is generally conceded that he js entitled to the office. Our candi- dates for sheriff and judge have no opposition neither from within our party nor in the republican party. J. W. McDauiels has giv en general satisfaction as county surveyor and will most likely be i re-elected. J. P. Kreycik for Co. Commissioner , Dist completes R the democratic ticket but we hope I to see every one of them elected and no doubt they will be. On i the republican ticket the situation ? is different. Three aspirants ' want to be nominated for county treasurer and only one for clerk. They have no candidate for sher ' iff nor county judge but have three candidates asking for the nomina- tion for county superintendent. It a would be hard to predict who is t the republican choice for the office L of county superintendent or for county treasurer because they j may get helpfrom the democrats t who may vote a republican ticket I at the primary to select the one Ii i preferred for county superinten- t . dent and the one least . popular . for - county treasurer. This , we say is i possible and may be indulged in . quite freely. The primary election will de- . cide who id to be county superin- tendent , but it may nominate the weakest . of three candidates on the republican ticket ! for county treasurer with the expectation of 3' seeing him go down to defeat at n . tho general election. The Truth About the Tariff TTroin : : the beginning we have been taught , by republican news- papers and statesmen , that the pro. tective tariff was of great value to the farmer. Tariffs on corn , on oats , on wheat , on barjey , on . hides , on beef , on potatoes / etc. , have been pointed to as'proof of the re publican party's friendly _ interest in the farmer. Those tariffs , we have been told , protected the high- ly paid American farmer from the cheap pauper farmer of Europe. Those tariffs meant dollars in the American farmer's pocket. The Bee tells us , frankly , that this is all humbug. In a leading editorial it confesses that "pro- ducts of the soil are in no wise in- fluenced by either high or low tariff. " Elucidating this , state- ment it goes on to say : " Of meat we produce a surplus and independent of the tariff there is no surplus anywhere to beat down prices if the tariff were tak- en off and the 20 to 30 per cent reduction made on this item in the pending bill is mofe of a conces- sion to sentiment than to practi- cal results. The same is true of wheat and other food grains. Fruits and vegetables are not af fected by the tariff except a few , and those mostly luxuries. " When the farmer is told here- after , by unscrupulous high tariff shouters like Ross Hammond and Bob Clancy , that a high tariff on farm products " makes the farmer prosperous , let him cite them to the admission ot the Omaha Bee that farm prod acts are not affected by the tariff , and it makes no dif ference , so far as these articles are concerned , whether the tariff is high or low. Commenting along this same line the Kansas City Times , an ardent Taft organ , makes these sensible observations : "It is certain that the farmers have reached a better understand- ing of the tariff question. Many of them know , and to their sorrow , that they "have been rr"r1I'1 duties on agricultural products which they do not need and which do not help them , into toleration ' ofcluties on other necessities of life. They know that a duty on wheat does not help them , but that a duty on woolens is a tax upon them. They know that they get nothing out of a duty on corn. but that they pay dearly for a duty on sugar. They know : that they receive no benefit from a duty on live stock , but that they pay the whole tax on farm ma - chinery. They know that a duty on vegetables is absurd , but that the duty on cotton goods is a cost- ly device to them. And so on. "The prices of American farm products are made almost wholly by the condition of the world' S markets , for this country pro duces vastly more of these pro- ducts than it consumes. If the United States were to have so short a crop as to be placed under the necessity of importing farm products , the tariff would help to keep prices up ; but the tariff can- not affect the prices so long as vast cargoes of these products are constantly going out to meet the demands of countries that are short on what the farmers have to sell. "It is , therefore , a blind , a sub- terfuge , a dishonest invention of the protected interests , to give the farmers something that is useless to them in order to make them ac cept something that is a burden to them , a burden they must bear in paying tribute to the trusts and other concerns that take"ad vantage of the tariff to rob the people. " The case could not be stated more plainly. \Ye trust the farmers of the great Missouri valley will pay due heed to these deliberate statements coming from the Omaha Bee and the Kansas City Times , the lead ing Taft organs of this part of the country. They are told now , on eminent republican authority , the same thing the democrats have been tell- I , ing them for years and that re publicans have denied. The de nial . . has given way to honest ad- mission. The tariff , so far as the farmer is i concerned , is a great skin game. It doesn't protect" the farmer a single penny's worth on what he has ! to sell. But it makes him pay i enormously more whenever IKJ goes to town to buy any article the manufacture which . is con- - ' J . , > . . . . . .
