Talk of the Town.

'
The Democratic County Mass
Convention Saturday at 2 o'clock
P. l\f.
Mrs. : Davenport has gone to
New York to Visit her daughter
and family.
J. W. Groves of Wood Lake
called on us yesterday while in
town on business.
Albert Fairchild wasv in town
, last' week and tells us that he had
a very satisfactory sale at his
place.
Col. Tracewell informs us that
I
Kels Rowley' sale at Wood Lake
and the Uck and Lausen sale was
*
a success.
Wm. Smith is home from Buck-
. mum , Wyo. . where he had been
two months but returned on ac
count of illness.
The water tank has been short
I of water several days the past
week of evenings and should a fire
occur at such a ' time it would be
hard to control. .
Don't forget the young people's
ice cream supper and boat ride
given by the Epworth League at
the mill pond Friday evening.
Come out and have a good time. .
Col. Gr. , E. Tracewell thinks
that people have got down toa
steady pace now and buy and sell
f readil 3 r. * He has had six sales the
paslTmonth and each one was a
success. There ought to be a de -
mand for everything so that those
"
overburdened could sell their sur-
I plus at any time at a fair market
value.
Joseph P. Kreycik filed for
county commissioner last week on
the Democratic ticket. Mr. : Krey-
cik is well known , among the peo-
ple of Wood Lake precinct and
has a wide acquaintance with peo-
. ple generally throughout the first
Commissioner Dist.

I JOHN J. MCLEAN , Observer.
Valentine and east Cherry coun-
ty people are feeling highly elated
over the prospect of Hon. C. H.
Cornell's electric railroad '
new ,
which runs from here to Fairfax , I'
S. D. , via Burton and Springview ,
following very closely the county
line for several miles , north and
east of Valentine. It is proposed
to have stations e"erjfew miles
wherever there is a good central
loading point and all kinds of pro-
duce can be hauled in to market
and transferred , to the main line
4
at Valentine or Fairfax North
Table lands will be in big demand
near this line of road and the value
of a farm near the' railroad that
will produce 100 bushels of pota-
toes to the acre , and a sure crop
every year , and a change to wheat
of 20 bushels , or oats 40 to 70 , or
corn 25 to 40 , will be a hundred
dollars an acre and more. This
may sound like an idle dream'in
the far west but the development
will immediately follow the line of
road established. This road fol
lows a rich farming section of the
country that will be put to earn-
ing money as soon as a market is
available.
Some of the railroad men were
at Meltendorff's : saloon Monday
afternoon and John Dilland with
some friends were engaged in
playing a game of pool when he
discovered that he had lost a big
leather waller that he carried in
his hip pocket containing $85 in
greenbacks. One of .Dilland's
friends had noticed one Carl Ol
son step up behind Dilland and
then. walk out the back door and- <
told Dilland so. Olson returned
about this time and he was accused
by Dilland and his friends of steal-
ing the wallet and money. : A fight
ensued in which one man got a .
:
blow over the right eye , and in
the excitement Olson got away but
was hunted up by Sheriff Bosseter
and he also took in Frank Han-
son , a pal of Olson , who after a
series of questions from Sheriff
Rosseter admitted picking up a
roll of bills amounting to $85 , the
missing money. 'The ' wallet ! was
found sticking behind a beer keg
in Meltendorff's : back yard. Han :
son says while the scrap was go-
ing on that Olson threw down the
roll of bills and he picked it up
and went to the bank and deposit-
ed , it in his name and which' he
gave up by signing a check to
John Dilland Tuesday while in
jail. The case came up for trial
Tuesday but was delayed until
Friday.
