Carrie Wilson was a welcome
visitor one day recently.

The pleasant cool weather of
last week was very welcome to
the norrnalites.
Still the plants and flowers are
being watched and analyzed by
the botany class. ! Many new speci-
mens are found. '
A recitation 'The Inventor's
wife" by Mae Wade was well ren-
dered and well received during
chapel hour last week.
Effie Carlson writes that she is
enjoying Bradford , Pennslylvania
for a short time then will go on
to New York and Boston. \
There are now ninety-six en-
rolled in the normal. Pearl Mc-
Bride and Joanna Rose , both of
Rushville , being the latest. .
Mr. Young , the Y. M. C. A.
field worker attended chapel ; Mon- :
day and gave a very appropriate
talk along the lines of true man-
hood and womanhood.
Not only the entire normal en-
joyed the Parland-Newhall enter-
tainment , but a goodly number of
town people who .appreciate first
class work were present.
Frances Grewe sends greetings
and a beautiful panoramic view of
Denver to the normalites. She-
with her sister Dora , are attend-
ing the National Educational as-
sociation in Denver on their way
to the Seattle exposition.
Edith Adamson gave a very
helpful Chapel talk on the soils
and various regions of Nebraska ,
indicating the crops most success-
ful on each soil. She illustrated
her : remarks by a Leat map of the
state , showing the different geolo-
gic formations.
Everybody reads normal notes
so we take the opportunity of
catching : the eye of some school
officers. Annual reports are all
due and must be filed with the
county superintendent soon or the
district may lose the state appor-
tionment of school money.
The- chapel talks , recitations ,
t
etc. , by pupils and instructors of
the normal are proving interesting
to the listeners and helpful I to the
speakers at least. It is one of the
practical ways of getting command
of good English. Supt. Gregory's
description of a trip to Wonderful
Crater Lake was both interesting
and instructive. "
Teachers who have visited the
weather service department have
been greatly interested in the ap-
pliances and apparatus seen there ,
Mr. McLean kindly gives full and
clear explanation concerning the
workings of the intricate mechan-
ism. All the teachers will have
an opportunity of visiting there
in charge of one of the normal in-
structors. '
The generous invitations of the
McLeod brothers , managers of
the Northwestern Real Estate Co. ,
C. H' Cornell and T. C. Hornby
extended to the normalites to take
an . auto ride to Ft. Niobrara , was
accepted and enjoyed last Satur-
day afternoon. Six finely deco-
rated cars "were in line at three
o'clock and soon filled with de-
lighted n.prmalites . . , to most of
whom an : aut ride . was a . new ex-
t
perience. It was necessary to
make two trips in order to trans-
port the crowd. Judge Walcott ,

first crowd and in a few minutes
the streamers of bunting flying
from the cars were disappearing
over the eastern horizon. Supt.
Gregory remained to gather up
the last load and the cars were
soon out of sight again with Val-
entine far in the west. . All spent
some time straying about in the
canyon below the falls and on the
river. The merry picnickers at
last ! gathered in the shade and af
ter singing some impromptu songs
partook of sandwiches and lemon-
ade until the approaching storm
warned the party to hasten home
or seek shelter. . Soon the six cars
-
we.-e loaded and speeding back
home while those left for the sec
ond trip were enjoying themselves
under shelter. Judge Walcott
says some one in the' first loads
back was wet ; but as no one has
complained there is some doubt
expressed. However , the Judge
ought to know. Three of the cars
returned for those who stayed and
in due time all were safely at
home. The following is one of
the songs freely indulged in by
the crowd.
