M. O. Metzger of Merriman
was in our city last Thursday and
returned Friday. Mr. Metzger
is putting up a large barn on his

ranch north of Merriman.
The Chicago Record Herald re
ports 1 killed and 48 injured in
Chicago , - and elsewhere 45 killed

and 1527 injured and 18 deaths '
due to tetanus and a loss by fire : of
nearly a half million dollars.
The weather the past week has
been mostly cloudy and threaten-
ing rain. There was a shower
early Sunday morning wh ich wet
the ground down about four inches
and the cloudy days since then
has helped vegetation.
During some horse races at , a
grove , one mile east of Gordon ,
last Saturday , one horse dodged
into the crowd in his excitemen t
and threw his rider , who fell , onto :
a Mr. Burt we believe , and broke
his leg. The rider was not ser-
iously hurt , though stunned for a
few moments. :
Albert Fairchild was in town
last Friday making arrangements
for his public sale of live stock and . .
ranch implements which will take :
place Monday , July 12. Mr.
Fairchild will sell 167 head of cat-
tle and 12 head of horses , besides
numerous other articles. See his

Rudolph Langer of Norden was
in town yesterday , coming up on
the train from Johnstown , and
rode back with C. H. Cornell in
the new automobile which Mr.
I Cornell uses now going out on his
survey of the proposed - : new elec-
tric line which is being surveyed
toward Norden. Mr. Langer tells
us that crops are looking well
down east. ' '

Alois Schaefer of Nenzel is in
town on business and to bring his
daughter to the doctor. His wife
is in Omaha with another daughter

pendicitis.
Henry Carter is in towa today.
He recently returned from Hot
"Springs where he took the hot
baths which he thinks helped him
some and he's going back as he : is
not feeling very well. He says
Mike and James Mone are up
there . . now.
Mr. Funk of Cody was in town
this week and his friends want
him to run for county superin-
tendent. He is a graduate of
Hastings college and has been
teaching for five years. He was
principal of the Cody school last
year and the Cody , people are well
pleased with him. He will meet
with general favor where people
know him and will make a strong
candidate.
The offices of county superin-
tendent and the judicial candidates
cannot be nominated by the pri
mary system this year , if the law
passed by the last legislature holds
good. Such candidates must get
on the ballot by petition without
reference to their political convic-
tions and have 200 signers to their
petition. Candidates for these
offices are now out with their pe
titions or expect to get out short-
ly. Other , - candidates must file
their nominations with the county
clerk before July 17 to get on the
a
princary : ballot. All candidates
for county office will take due
notice that they must get busy
if they want the nomination. Thus
far we have candidates it the fol

A. B. Cameron of Schuyler ,
Nebr. , was "one of the fortunate in
drawing a homestead in Tripp
county. He registered at our of-
fice last October and is now re-
siding on his homestead about 30
miles northeast of Valentine. He
was in town the first of the week ,
hauling out a load of building ma- ,
terial and supplies , and visited
relatives , Rev. W. W. Wells and

Earl Billings' was accidentally
shot by Aaron Kast , his step2"
father ; last Monday forenoon
while loading a revolver. - The ,
cartridges' didn't go in ver.y
smoothly and -closing the re-
volver it was discharged , killing
the boy. Two years before Aaron
Kast shot his own leg off with the
same revolver. Kast lives on the
old Grenough place about 8 miles
southeast of Norden.

The editor and his better half
celebrated the Fourth of July at
the "Big Elm" on the Mobrara
river south of Irwin last Saturday.
A large number from the sur-
rounding country congregated
there and had a big day , filled with
sports , horse races , foot races , a
ball game and smaller sports. We
understand they have been cele-
brating at the "Big Elm" the past
three S years ' and each year the
-
number increases until the ' 'Big
Elm" has become famous for a
celebration point. George W.
Beamer was the master of cere-
monies and president of the day.
Henry Borneman is treasurer : of
the association and Quartus Skin-
ner is marshal of the day. We
,
were the guests of Mr. : Beamer
and his estimable , wife while there
and we enjoyed their hospitality.
Mr. Beamer has : a nice home and
some fine farm land which he calls
the Box 0 ranch.
M. King , who left last week for
his home at Denison , la. , arrived
home safely but suffered an at-
tack of heart failure last Satur-
day. A message was sent to his
daughter , Mrs. W. T. Kincaid , to
come. and she started Saturday
night but arrived after Mr. King's
death which occurred Sunday
morning. Mr. King has been
quite feeble for several years but
has kept up and enjoyed playing
chess which was his chief amuse-
ment and played frequently by
mail " , indicating the move on a
postal card. He was a good play-
er and found considerable pleasure
and consolation in his declining
years over the chess board. Mr.
King was not strong when we saw
him last , the day before he started
back home , and the extreme hot
weather of last week may have
hastened his. death. Valentine
friends extend their sympathy ' to
the bereaved family. Mr. : King
was about 74 years of age. .
