Normal Notes.
Nearly all the normalites" went
home Friday to celebrate the 4th
of July on Saturday.
The change in the temperature
was a welcome relief from the
scorching heat of last week.
Minnie Johnson of Kushville is
the latest one to enroll. There ,
are more coming but they should
come soon.
Myrtle Searby gave an oration
on Abraham Lincoln at chapel
Thursday. It was well prepared
and well rendered and was a credit
to the young lady.
During the absence of Mr. Mc- I
Crea last week Ernest Foster had '
charge of the building and did the
work well. We are glad to know
that Mr. McCrea's sister is much
better.
Superintendent Bowen . as the
orator at the celebration in' At-
kinson last Saturday. Reports ;
indicate that he did the subject i
justice and he says that he enjoyed
the trip.
Eldine and Joe Spirks from the
model school gave two recitations
at chapel Friday. Joe recited
Lincoln's Gettysburg speech i and
Eldine the beautiful poem written
after Lincoln's death , My Captain ,
'
0 My Captain. r _ - . ' _
I. A. , Downey , former state in-
spector of normal high schools ,
spent Friday with us and at chapel
hour gave a very helpful talk
along lines that interested- and
helped the teachers. He enjoyed
a swim in the lake before leaving
in the evening.
Mr. Hudson came for Mrs.
Hudson Friday evening and they
took a moonlight ride home and
spent the Fourth at Simeon. Mr.
Hudson is a genial fellow and a
first class man , but we do not want
him to keep our county superin-
tendent too long. ) .
There is a report that severa 1
teachers are planning to attend the
normal two or three weeks to pre-
pare for examinations which are
to be held the last of July instead
of the third Friday and Saturday.
A good plan , come and get in
touch with those who can help'you.
Miss Lulu Gregory has proved
an apt pupil in swimming. At
her second trial she was able to
swim front or back and float.
Several of the normal girls can
swim and others are learning.
This is the only summer normal
where this art and splendid exer-
cise can be learned ;
Sylvia Allard gave a very inter-
esting account of the recent grad-
uation exercises at the St. Francis
Mission school. She commended
the pupils , especially in draw-
ing and water color.- work. She
thought the exercises were very
creditable , and showed careful
training on the part of the teach-
ers. , Miss Allard answered many
questions'asked her by the aud-
ience concerning the Indians.
Last evening a party of eleven
on horseback ; . escorted by our
genial friend , Judge Walcott ,
crossed the ford on the Minne-
chaduza and then mace their way
up one of the picturesque canyons
to the table land. The bright new
moon lent its witchery the scene
and the gay spirits of the company
made every moment of the time a
delight. , All halted on the bridge "
